It's called "not tipping your hand early b/c other teams are also vying for a QB". The more QBs we bring in, the less idea the rest of the league has in what our intentions actually are, and it obviously worked b/c you seem quite perplexed with it all.
i'm really trying hard to find some sort of positive spin on this and all I got is it should shut up all the Tebow Time in Miami talk. This is sickening, from Manning to Flynn to Smith and somehow we end up with Garrard. I really want to pull a Rumplestiltskin and wake up March 1st next year. This just isn't going to end well. Someone please tell me were not done in the QB hunt this year! Please!
Should have kept Henne, he is 100000000 times better than Garrard. This move reeks of desperation. Ireland is a first class BOOB.
Do I really have to explain this out to some of you? We're in a uniquely precarious and sensitive situation b/c our HC & OC were the previous coaches of 2 of the most desirable 2012 QB options. THERFORE, you guys can bet your arse that teams have been analyzing our every move & statement closely hoping to get a gauge on how we truly feel about Flynn & Tannehill since we know them better than anyone! So the last thing we wanted this offseason was to tip our hand and provide another team any extra motivation to beat us to the punch and leave us pissing in the wind. SO, if Tannehill has ACTUALLY been the apple of our eye all along with Sherman potentially gaga over being reunited with Ryan in Miami, then we have ACTUALLY done a masterful job so far of creating confusion and hiding our interest. If we bring everyone in and show some interest in Flynn [while all eyes are carefully watching], then it leaves the rest of the league with very little idea on what the heck we're actually thinking. Other teams don't know if we wanted Flynn but simply couldn't land him or if it was all a rouse; they don't know if Smith was the guy we wanted but simply couldn't land him or he was a rouse as well. By doing this the NFL is left with little clue how much we do or don't like Tannehill, which does nothing but play in our favor b/c teams might now be less willing to sacrifice picks to leap frog us if they think we might not want him. For heck's sake, some of you are acting like our FO is supposed to write down their QB plans and tape it to their forehead for all to see.
It's not the obvious choice on the surface. It's likely the obvious choice after sifting through all their subterfuge and applying some logic to everything.
This is a ridiculous signing. WHy should we be impressed? We always look at other players and then get the dregs. If this is the QB we sign (and only to a 1 year deal) then why the hell didn't we sign Eric Winston? There is no way to sugar coat that Ross has to be having financial trouble and does not want to spend. The deal that Flynn signed, for example, was easy to subsume. It was basically a 2 yr deal for $13 M. Nothing when the cap will expand significantly. Now we get Garrard for 1 year and that's the solution? This FO is insanely bad. And, if this is the move - why not just sign the guy? Why do they have to run this team into the ground? Why should anyone buy a ticket to a Dolphins game? Honestly, I hope like anything that the stands are empty next year. The only fans that should go should be carrying "FIreland" signs. It is nearly impossible to be a fan of this team. I really had hopes for Philbin and the WCO but if this is their plan (what have they done for the offense? They still need a QB in the draft. They traded their #1 WR - understandable - but still go into the draft needing not only a QB but to land a top calibre WR and they did not sign any in FA; they did not shore up the OL - which they need to do in the draft as well; AND they still have defensive needs. This FA offseason has been the absolute worst for Miami.
Because it most likely means that they want to draft a franchise QB in the 1st round? You know, the thing we have all *****ed about for years and years.
You just explained why if they're trying to be all "tricky" it's not going to be Tannehill. The way things have gone, all eyes will be on him. The way to put into effect a sensible strategy to deflect attention from that direction would have been to make very passing interest in Manning known, not bring Flynn in, not negotiate with Smith, sign Garrard, give very public votes of confidence to Moore's skills and Garrard's health, and drop the Tannehill pick at #8 when teams might have thought maybe Miami really is satisfied at QB. Now we have a bunch of swings and misses, a statement that QB is the emphasis, and Tannehill as the most likely remaining option according to many.
It does justify it. You just choose not to see it. Tannehill hypothetically being our #1 QB desire sans Manning absolutely does NOT mean we wouldn't have any interest in Flynn or Smith if the price were right, especially since Tannehill isn't an absolute acquisition despite us being in great position to draft him. You're trying to make this seem black & white when it's not the case.
I'm trying to say that lowballing Flynn makes the team look like *******s and reduces the chances of other talented free agents considering Miami if they think they're just going to get lowballed. I expect the front office to have it together enough to at least know if they're going to be competitive. They weren't close.
Would not surprise me at all, I'd actually prefer Weeden tbh, Tannehill is the guy people think they want when in fact, he is green as asparagus in Qb terms, 20 starts, fumbling problem, but because you feel we need a Qb, of course he should be drafted whether or not he can actually play Qb in the NFL.
We've lost B. Marshall, Langford and Bell and obtained R. Marshall, Hicks and Garrard... The team is shaping up, uh, nicely?
It only looks bad to those who thought he was franchise. We offered what we thought he was worth. The problem is there's a disconnect. People think the FO thought of Flynn the same way they did and low balled him. I say the low ball proves they didn't think as highly of him as the fans did.
That's fine. I wasn't sold on Flynn myself. I'm just saying they owed him the respect of knowing a lowball offer wasn't going to do it versus what Seattle was preparing to sign him for. Front office types are expected to be in the know about this stuff. Either Miami's front office is too backward and/or ignorant to be able to find out or is too obtuse to understand why you don't do what they just did there. If they coveted him, they needed to come off of more money. If they didn't covet him, no reason to bring him in.
Respectfully, you're mistaken. By attempting these "swings and misses" it leaves the impression that we might not be that sold on Tannehill to begin with, and if we hypothetically "don't like him" we're not going to draft him regardless if he's the best remaining QB prospect. You simply don't use a first round pick on a player you don't want. Case in point, the Rams passed on Matt Ryan despite their desperate need at QB and Ryan representing the best talent available at the position.
How does it reduce chances of other talented free agents when we're not forced to lowball them? Players get lowballed all the time and by every team.
It doesn't leave that impression at all when the team isn't even competitive in most of those races. When the team is lowballing Flynn, it makes things look like they're idiots who might be trying to pull some sophisticated manuever in a ham-fisted manner but totally aren't pulling it off. That's about it.
Even NFL Networks is reporting that they have no idea what we're doing and neither do some of our players. If that's what we're intentionally trying to do in order to prevent from tipping our hand, then it's working.
The odds of that given the track record of Ireland are about 10 to 1 in favor of Miami being adrift with no ****ing idea what to do.
What's the problem? Sounds a lot like when we were crying about signing Moore last off-season. He worked out better than expected.
Was this the big quarterback signing Ross was wanting? Should we all be excited about the Garrard, Artist and Marshall signings as a big step Forward for the Dolphins?
It will be interesting when and if the truth ever comes out how much was offered to Flynn. In the interview with P. King he said Flynn kept saying that Flynn referred to the vibe as to why he "chose" Seattle over Miami. Flynn may have received a comparable offer to Seattle's from Miami. There is also a strong possibility that Philbin thought Flynn was franchise, but it is Ireland that calls the shots when it comes to making offers. So when I read "the FO" that may only consist of Ireland and not Ireland and Philbin. Where do fans get the idea that coach Philbin is part of deciding how much to offer? Managing the cap falls on Ireland.
Little do they know that Ireland has been setting this con up ever since he started asking prospects if their mothers are whores. It's all coming into focus now.
