We need cap space to give Cam Wake a new deal. Just sayin..

Now, let's restructure Long/Dansby's deals, sign Mark Anderson, draft a couple of WRs, draft some O-Linemen, and draft Brock Osweiler.

Jones is not a quality FS, but I think hes fine at SS. Bell always played a weird LB/S hybrid kind of roll. I think Jones is capable of that as hard hitter and a run stopper. If he can get a bit better in coverage, he'll be fine for us. Bell was not great in coverage historically anyway. I really have no problem with this move, especially not if we follow it up with a good signing in place...such as Anderson.

I think Clemons is a much better prospect than Jones at SS. I also think Marshall is a much better option at FS than the Dolphins have had in years.

Figures. Cut the guy to free up cap space AFTER there isn't anyone worth a **** to spend money on. Par for the course with this front office.

This is the NFL. Unfortunately, fan faves do not necessarily fit in the NFL mold for saving money. Just the way it is.

I like Bell, and I wish him the best. Basically a hybrid-LB like one poster stated, and was pretty much a liability in coverage. Not surprised by the move.

If We can Get Clemons Back at Free and Jones Working At Strong And Have Them Kind Of Mesh Together, We Might Have something working For Us. I Dont Know why Clemons Didnt play more this year, The Year He Started Getting Beat Deep Wasnt a Big Issue , Unless It Was Jacoby Ford.

What a bunch of scumbags cutting him after other Safety spots get filled up. If you want to make him a cap casualty, give him the best opportunity to sign on somewhere else.

Its not like we were waiting to make sure we get a different FA safety before cutting him.

At least he found a lifeboat away from this sinking ship.

Yeah, this was coming eventually. He was aging and due a big salary.

He was fun to watch as a Dolphin. Best of luck to him.

Well, this move really is perfectly understandable, given that we didn't fool around and only flirt with good players this offseason (as we have in the past) and instead had our plan in place the moment free agency hit, to go after our #1 player priority and signed Manning Flynn Smith Garrard to a big multi-year (one year) contract as well as landing a great RT in Eric Winston - who shores up our OL for the future ...

    Wait ...

I wouldn't mind seeing Clemons at SS with Marshall at FS. Clemons was rarely out of position, but he was rarely in position to make a great play. He's also a solid hitter. Jones and Clemons can run SS between them IMO. Bell should have expected this and I hope he comes back at a lower cost +Mark Anderson.

    What?!

Do you realize we're in the middle of free agency and there are STILL plenty of unsigned free agents out there, so how does that make Bell any different? Give me a break.

Big Bell fan and as much as I get the business side of it I don't know what we going to do at SS/FS this year. I mean, if we don't even use the cap space why cut him?? I don't see us needing the space that bad but I could be wrong. I feel a restructure would have made more sense. Bell had some downfalls but still one of the better players at his position and his overall value to our team specifically was big. He was our captain on defense and had the longest tenor of any other player. Would have been nice to keep him around but oh well I guess. Just hope that he doesn't sign with the Patsies

Personally I like Clemons at SS and always have. IMO this makes better use of his speed and burst b/c he's a better and more decisive player when the action's in front of him.

me too, which is one reason I personally prefer him at SS rather than free.
As a Clemson fan, I've never really felt the coverage aspect of the game was his strong suit, and he's always made more plays with the action in front of him and more mistakes when it's behind FWIR. Remember the nice downhill stuff he made against Adrian Peterson 2 years ago? That's how I like seeing him. IMO he's more effective around the box & LOS and in the short to short-intermediate pass game, but the downfield stuff (especially turning and running) is where I lose some trust in his ability.

I hope replacing YB at SS is a little easier than replacing Brock Marion at FS... because 8 years and 8 FS's later we are still trying to fill that hole.

I'm perfectly fine with this move. I'm actually pretty excited about the combination of Richard Marshall at FS (like I expect) and Chris Clemons at SS. At FS IMO there were too many reads in coverage for Clemons but at SS his natural athleticism will shine.

If you need another run stopper he is fine. If you want a guy to cover TE's or play coverage he is terrible.
