“My style is a couple things that are important to know. Number one, it’s a privilege for me to be the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. So when I meet the team for the first time, I’m going to remind these guys of the great tradition, history that this franchise has and the great obligation they have as a member of the Miami Dolphins to represent this organization the right way both on and off the field. That’s number one. Beyond that what I’m going to bring to the Dolphins as an organization football wise on Sunday’s I think they’re going to see a sound football team, one that plays with good fundamental, good discipline, high effort. They’re going to see a smart football team. A team that’s going to understand the situations in the ball game and respond and execute whether it’s two minute offense, last play of the half, third down offense, execution versus pressure. You’re going to see a team that’s tough physically and mentally, a team that plays the game the right way. Those are the representation the organization the right way and is very, very important to me and our staff. We’re going to be a sound football team. We’re going to be a smart football team. We’re going to be a tough football team. We’re going to be a developmental football team. I see this team getting better week in and week out as we move forward. Year in, year out…I see us being a consistent, winning football team.”

I know they are other threads going on his interview, and if the mods want to merge thats cool, but the point I would like to make is, I believe if you are a real man, a man that stands for everything right in this game, you want the most bleak, the toughest task, you want the job that no one supposedly wants, cause there is nothing better, or more rewarding,, then turning a franchise that not many believe in, a franchise that everyone is taking shots at, and tuning it around with your own vision, and doing it the right way..

Here's to building our own true players..and having them play the game the right way..

I would also like to thank our owner and Gm for believing in this guy, and giving this guy the shot, I believe he is truly honered to be our coach, and passionate enough to see it all the way through.

Philbin certainly says all the right things and he appears to know what he wants to accomplish. Of course the next big question is, can he put all his words into action and actually be an effective HC? I certainly hope he is not full of the same hyperbole that the previous coaches were when they promised they were going to turn this organization around and instead only made matters worse over the last decade.

I am not yet sold on Philbin because I have yet to actually see how he responds in a game when he has all the responsibility of a HC. I hope he is a success but words mean nothing to be right now because he is simply stating what every new coach says when he takes over a team. Actions speak much louder than words and I will be judging those actions once the regular season actually starts.

That foundation and perspective is what you want to begin with..the rest we'll see, but i'am sure going to give him the patience on my end to execute his vision, and judge how hard, smart, and tough his players play for him..

He is certainly saying all of the right things...despite some frustration and desperation with the state of the everything over the last year or so I'm actually finding myself excited to see what happens again. Heres to hoping for a solid draft and some fun games this year. My expectations aren't off the charts for year 1 under Philbin, but I certainly hope to see some progression, some game closing, and some young players stepping up.

Even if its a 6-10 or 8-8 season again, but the signs of real lasting life are back in this team, I'll be elated by seasons end. If its more of the same ole same ole ....I'll probably kick an infant or something extreme. Not really...but, you all know the felling...

I have no problem being patient with him since I think the Dolphins are actually in a rebuilding process, but they just don't want to admit to it. The Dolphins just have too many holes to fill to expect them to be a playoff team next year. They are still without a quality starting QB and they have no number one WR at this time. They need to find players who can actually shore up the right side of the offensive line. I also think they need to upgrade the starting TE position.

On defense they need to find another pass rusher to complement Wake. I see Misi as a very mediocre LB and I think they need to upgrade his position. I think all the safeties on the team are merely mediocre at best and I hope that they are able to upgrade this position in the draft.

With so many holes on the team, I think it is going to take Philbin at least three years of excellent coaching to get this team to position that they are legitimate playoff contenders. So I will be willing to watch and see how the team progresses under his leadership and I will remain patient as long as I see improvement as the season goes along.

Of course I can't promise to be as patient with Ireland. I am willing to give him this off season to bring in more talent, but if the Dolphins finish with a similar record as they have the last three seasons and they continue to lose to every winning team on their schedule, I will once again be on here demanding Ross fires Ireland. Right now though, I am hoping for the best from both Philbin and Ireland for the 2012 season and beyond.

I'm excited about Philbin too; but 'm going to hold off sending a thank you letter to Jeffry and Mr. Ross until we see him head coach some actual football games first.

He knows he wasn't our first choice, but I hope he takes advantage of the opportunity to be a head coach, and proves he was the right choice.

I think Joe Philbin is the right choice for the Dolphins. Maybe I am just too excited but he seems like the real deal and he is not going to make many mistakes as the previous coaches has done. I hope the team buys into what he is selling. I am already sold on him. I trust he will draft the players that he wants that fits what he wants to do. I believe he is not going to fold under pressure and choose someone that doesn't fit his purposes because someone else wants him to choose. I want to see him fight for who he wants on this team and no one else. Like I said, I am sold on him.

Perhaps you missed the memo, but Philbin won't be drafting anyone. He obviously will be giving his input to Ireland as to the type of player he wants for the offensive and defensive schemes he plans to run, but it is Ireland who has total control over ALL player personnel decisions.

The reason Philbin is the Dolphins coach today and it isn't Jeff Fisher is because Fisher actually wanted final say on all player personnel decisions, including the draft. Ross wanted Ireland to have final say, so Fisher is the HC of the Rams and Philbin took the job with the understanding that Ireland will be responsible for the players drafted and all the players signed in free agency.

Personally I think a HC should have at least equal control over player personnel decisions with the GM, but that is not the case with the Dolphins.

It's not a thank you letter it's trying to provide our new coach with a good working environment..which is something he's accustomed to...Remember our players have nothing to do with folks disdain for Ireland, if they play as hard as they can I will support them and separate my criticism appropriately so they are not being sh&$ on in the process.

I percieve it more as his "vision" for the team. The general principles through which he intends to coach, teach, and ultimately forge this team its identity.
Taking it too literally, will unfairly set expectation. For instance, his motivations will be in directing them to play the game "smart", while in truth mileage will obviously vary from one vehicle to another.:chuckle:

I took it as his first priority is to remind every player on our team who the fu^5 we are and were, and when you have tradition, you should respect it..no matter if we haven't done sh&^ in a while, he's gonna make sure you respect the uniform..establish a sense of pride even though the fans aren't giving it to them.

I agree with you almost 100%, DJ. I support Philbin and our players regardless of my thoughts on Ireland. I'm just tempering my expectations a bit until we see him in action on the Dolphins sidelines. I was pretty excited about Cam Cameron as a coach too... :pity:

I wasn't blitz, I hated the philosophy going into that hiring.."we have a great defense so let's go find an offensive mind who won't mess with our defense"....bad recipe..

    Here and there
Exactly, it's his vision statement, like alot of corporations have to outline their vision of how their business will be ran and expectations. Nothing wrong with it, i see alot off people wanna jump on the "what did you expect him to say" bandwagon but if he didnt say anything people would be asking why he hasnt said anything about his expectations and vision of the team. kinda a catch22, dam if you do dam if you dont. A little tolerance goes a long way.

Two aspects of a head coach's job are 1) dealing with the fans and media and 2) setting the tone or culture for the franchise. In both of these regards Philbin seems like an excellent choice. Whether he is capable in the other aspects of heading coaching is yet to be seen but we all should reserve judgement for a year or two until he has crafted his team and they buy into his vision.

He should walk into the locker room on the first day with Shula, Buoniconti, Marino, Zach Thomas and JT, and have them all look at the players when he starts telling them about tradition.
