Dont think that he'll make it to #8
Cleveland takes him at #4 if not someone (Seattle, KC, ?) trade up to #7

How was he on the short passes? That is critical in a WCO.

From what I read and saw regarding Tennehill, Seattle must not be 100% sold on Flynn. They are showing a lot of intrest in Tennehill, but I guess it could be a smoke screen. Cleveland at 4 scares me more then anyone.

All depends on what Ireland and Philbin thought now. If they think he has it, they better seriously consider trading up with Minnesota. I think the Browns take him at 4 otherwise. This is where winning 6 meaningless games has left us. From a shot at Luck to being in a position to not even get the 3rd best QB in the draft class. The rest of the league is onto the fact that QB is essential to winning. Only way a team has a crack at a franchise guy now is to suck hard for a year or mortgage the future in a trade up. I don't think we'll ever see a QB with franchise potential slide like Aaron Rodgers or others have in the past. Teams are going to take their chances and reach on any QB with a first or possibly even 2nd round grade early in round 1.

Cleveland's going to take Trent Richardson in my opinion. You could argue he's the third best player in this draft, maybe even second, and gives them a much needed dimension to relieve pressure off of McCoy. They can then come back in the mid rounds and select a quarterback, someone like BJ Coleman of Tennessee-Chattanooga who they probably like due to schematic fit.

I'm with you 100% on this. I think McCoy, with help (like 99% of all QB's), can be a fine QB. Richardson can be that help. This mentality of thinking a rookie or even a 2nd year QB should be able to win NOW is ruining the careers of potentially good QB's.

Brees, Eli, Rodgers, Brady, Manning....they ALL sat on the bench and/or struggled early on in their career. Ben Roth is probably the only exception to this rule I can think of who is playing right now. However, the teams he played on early in his career were STACKED! And even then he threw for over 3500 yards once in his first 5 seasons(only 3 times in his career). And in his entire career he's thrown for over 25 TD's in a season only twice.

Point being...99% of all QB's struggle their first few seasons.

I don't know if Tanny is the answer or not. Don't know if he's the next Aaron Rodgers, or Brady Quinn. What I do know is we don't currently have a franchise QB on the roster, and I'm getting very sick and tired of this. To correct this, I want to see our management do everything they can to get one ASAP. And - to be frank - that means taking chances until you get one. You have to swing for the fences, and try to hit a triple or HR. Doing so also means you may strike out, or hit a lowly single, but you have to try, rather than sitting there w/ the bat on your shoulder like we've been doing the past 13 seasons.

To me, if our FO and coaches have a good read on Tanny (I mean, they should, right, w/ Sherman) - and they think he can develop into a star, than darn it, they better make sure he's a Dolphin, no matter what it takes (it's not going to take three #1s folks, like the Skins paid, but it will take something). Heck, even if they think there's a small chance, they should do it, and groom the kid right. Unlike in the past, we have coaches that have actually worked with and developed QBs, and we should take advantage of it.

The only way they should not draft Tanny is if they feel they know something about him that others don't, and they feel he will be a failure. Otherwise, draft him draft him DRAFT HIM!!!!

And if they do, and he sucks, oh well, you try again and again and again until we get our guy. 'Cause when we do, we're set for 12 years, and can concentrate on building up the rest of the team. Right now, teams like NE, PITT, B-more, Atlanta, NO, GB, SD, NYG, and some others can sleep easy knowing they are relevant, and will have a very good chance at making the playoffs this coming season, if not a lot more. Others will have to piece things together to have a shot (think Jets in '09 and '10, us in '08, Chiefs in '10), and even if they do, it may only be for a season or two, and nothing more. The other ones I mentioned, they'll be as relevant in 2-10 years as they are today, unless they lose their franchise guy (like Brady, who can't play forever). And those who are losing their guy due to age HAVE been relevant for the past 5-11 years. Remember when that used to be us??

I want us to be relevant again, and - as we all know and are hit over w/ the head with it every day - we won't be consistently until we get our franchise QB. Even if say Moore and Garrard are able to lead us and play relatively mistake-free football this year, and we manage to capitalize on a lesser schedule to win 10 games and sneak into the playoffs .... dos this have any staying power going into 2013 and beyond? No! And it won't until we have that franchise QB.

So, if Tanny is that guy, or even has that potential to be that guy (let's face it, first-round QBs are a crap shoot (see, Marino '83 about taking chances)), then get him already and be done with it!

I don't agree that you "swing for the fences" or take unnecessary chances unless you have a great belief about the guy. I would have paid big (overpaid even) to trade up for Luck. I wouldn't have done it for RG3 simply b/c I see him as a greater risk. But I don't see taking Tannehill at #8 as some huge risk. He's a guy that most every expert agrees has franchise QB level talent even though he's not ready to start immediately. That level of talent is worth a top 10 pick in today's NFL. Especially with the rookie salary cap that makes it easier to keep a QB on the bench for a year or two. Even the "talking heads" on NFL network that don't think he's worth a top 10 pick admit that Tannehill is better than the QBs who went at #8 and #10 last year. I think they're just out of touch with the cost. It's like when I complain that gas is $4.00 a gallon (as it is in my area). I can complain all day long that people are crazy for paying that much for gas, but the reality is that that is the market in my area. I either pay it or I don't get any gas. In the NFL market that's the price for a franchise QB level talent. The Dolphins either pay it or odds are they won't get a franchise QB.

You bring up a great point. I don't want them swinging at balls in the dirt. But I gotta think they know Tanny better than anyone, and should be in good position to know whether swinging for the fences on him is a good idea.

Think about this, though. Over the past 10 years or so, here are some of the QBs we could've had if we had swung for the fences in the draft, or taken a chance:

    Without trading up:
    -Drew Brees
    -Aaron Rodgers
    -Matt Ryan
    -Joe Flacco

    Trading up:
    -Jay Cutler
    -Big Ben

Don't get me wrong, there are guys they could've swung on during this time period too that would've been awful picks, but I'd be happy w/ any of the above to differing degrees.

Unfortunately you are only going to be more disappointed after this off season because I don't see the Dolphins having any chance of getting the franchise QB from what is left in the draft or in free agency.

Manning was the only legitimate franchise QB in free agency and Luck and RG3 are the only QB's I see in this draft which have the opportunity to become franchise QB's in the NFL in the future.
I don't see Tannehill or any of the other second tier QB's being as good as Matt Moore, and I think Moore is a very average QB in the NFL.

I just hope that the Dolphins will be bold enough to do whatever is necessary to move up and draft Matt Barkley in the 2013 draft. I see this as the Dolphins best chance to get a future franchise QB in the near future. I have accepted that the Dolphins will not be able to upgrade their QB position in this off season, therefore I am already looking forward to the 2013 draft and the opportunity to draft Barkley.

Looking forward to Barkley just seems like a HUGE waste of energy. Even if we improve to 8-8 or 9-7, which seems very likely, then the chances of trading up to get Barkley, likely at #1 or #2, are slim-to-none.
Just playing the odds, IMO anyway, the odds of us landing Barkley are less than a "so-called 2nd-tier QB like Tannehill" panning out and become a franchise QB.
personally, I see Tannehill as closer to the line between 1st and 2nd tier, given that, it's more than justified to take him at #8.
and odds are, teams drafting in top 5-10 will have a few teams desperate for trading up to get Barkley next year.

or maybe it's like---- The price of gas has dropped to $1.00 a gallon, and if you don't get to the station by 6am, all the gas will be gone. So either get there by 6 or walk to work..... or ride the ole bicycle in the garage.

Of course Miami should get him. And keep taking QB's until they get one who can carry the team when needed.

Not sure whether he will be a top QB...nobody can be really, but we'll probably screw it up and not get him anyway.

Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, and Cam Newton.

People can argue up and down what kind of QBs Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco are but they helped get their team to the playoffs year 1. And I wouldn't really call Cam Newton's first year a struggle. Because of the rules passing has become easier. So has the transition from college to the NFL.

I'm not saying I disagree with you. If you can sit a QB and let him learn before throwing him in, it's not a terrible thing. I just don't think it "ruins" a QB to start him right away. I'd say for just about every QB that sat before starting you can find an example of a guy who had was thrown right into the fire and his career turned out fine, whether he had immediate success or had some growing pains. I expect Luck and RGIII to do just fine starting from day 1. They may struggle early, but don't think it will ruin their careers.

I think the biggest thing is how you handle the development that first year. Like you said it's not necessarily bad to let them stat as rookies, but I think too many teams expect them to come in and light it up right away. Those expectations and mismanagement of them is what leads to problems.

Tannehill scares me at #8, he just isn't worth it. I realize the pressure of the team to solve the QB problem, but reaching for a guy is definitely not the answer. I would be more comfortable drafting him in the late 1st round, but the way the league is going, he wont be there by then.
I guess if push comes to shove and you really like the guy, you have to take him at #8 or risk losing him. I just cannot feel good about this move.

Definitely don't trade up though. There is no way you can justify trading up for Tannehill and not trading up for RG3.

Please, please dont spend any picks trading up!! If Tanny gets taken at 4 then either Richardson, Claiborne or Blackmon falls to 8. We would have plenty of suitors to trade up for our pick.... or even take Blackmon; but in either case take Weeden (who i think is a better passer) in the second. How about a Blackmon/Weeden 1-2 round? Or perhaps Fleener/Weeden/Curry round 1-2?

The problem I get with Ryan Tannehill is that the vibe I keep feeling when people talk about him is not the vibe I get when I watch him play football.

What I mean is, the vibe I get from people talking about him is that he's got a great arm, great feet, size, good accuracy, etc...but that he's empty upstairs, doesn't have what it takes. Doesn't anticipate. Is "raw", etc.

But when I watch him play football, I see a guy that's making really good throws, pretty smart decisions, throwing with good timing, fair accuracy, really good arm strenght, every now and then getting caught too in love with a throw and forcing it in there, really good pocket presence and handling of a rush, and then at least half a dozen to a dozen times a game rolling out of the pocket and making throws on the run that are worth GOLD at the next level, especially in Joe Philbin's system.

I just don't get it. How does the guy that is on film match up with this guy people talk about being so 'raw' and 'overrated'?

He's another Chad Henne? Chad Henne wishes he could handle a pocket, feel the pass rush and make plays on the move the way Ryan Tannehill does 6 to 12 times a football game. Chad Henne wishes he could take off on a scramble and outrun almost every player in the secondary. If Chad Henne could do those things he wouldn't be Chad Henne and he certainly wouldn't be a Jacksonville Jaguar right now.

Meh..Ryan is mediocre and like Ben surrounded by great players. He threw for something like 6000 yards in his first two seasons combined. With I believe under a 60% comp rate. That's not horrible, but it just shows that it really wasn't him getting his team to the playoffs. He just did enough to not ruin their chances. Flacco's first season wasn't horrible, but it was very Henne-like. If Flacco or Ryan had been drafted by the Dolphins they'd have been nothing more than Chad Henne.

Cam had, of course, a great season. However, I purposely left off 1 year QB's because I would really like to see a few years under their belts before I put them in the Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Manning class.

Yeah, I just don't get it either Chris.

    Added,
Even Einstein had to develop his understanding of quantum physics, no. How some people can think being talented at something means you should automatically be great at it has me dumbfounded.
It also seems like the baseline some people use to measure Tannehill is inaccurate.
It seems too many are comparing him to the standard of a 3 year starting QB who's played the position consistently for the past 8 years. That's BS. Where is he at this point based on 19 games and less experience? That's what I care about comparing him to. In that regard, I don't see how you can NOT be overly impressed with him.

i agree with you, i was watching tannehill vs northwestern and there was a play where tannehill read the defense perfectly signaled his WR to run a skinny post and he nailed it drilled a perfect pass that would have been a td but the receiver dropped it. tannehill has a lot of potential IMO and i think taking him at #8 would be a wise decision

he presents more problems than potential to the Browns at this ponit in their development
he will be our #8 pick in the draft, then sit for a season learning the game before emerging as the Franchise QB.

He is not bad for a RECIEVER who has only played 19 games at QB and if drafted in the first round would have the 3rd MOST interceptions ever (from previous year) at the position for a first round pick.

Sure he could go on to greatness but he has a higher probability (based on all factors) of busting . He is very high risk for a top 10 pick, pretty much as high as they get.

He is still fairly raw for it being his natural position. Bonus of if he busts, he can probably hold up in the slot/emergency QB situation

At the college level he has twice as many games (practically twice not quite )at WR than QB. What he did in high school , IMHO, is irrelevant

I'm not a fan of Tannenhill at all but we need to at least get facts straight.

Yes Tannenhill played WR but it was never meant to be a position switch. It was to get his athleticism on the field until it was his turn to start at QB. He was ALWAYS going to be a college QB.

Dan Marino was only the 6th best quarterback in the '83 draft. Jim Kelly was only the 5th best quarterback in the '83 draft. Tom Brady was a 6th round draft pick.

Being picked first doesn't mean you're a franchise quarterback. Look at some of the quarterbacks that were drafted either first or high in the draft and ask yourself, where are they now?

    JaMarcus Russell?
    Ryan Leaf?
    Jeff George?
    Matt Leinart?
    Rick Mirer?
    Todd Blackledge?

These were college STUDS that NFL teams gambled their futures on and lost!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not belittling the importance of the quarterback, but if you're going to bankroll your future on an untested college kid whose going to go from poor and humble to instant millionaire over night, you best be sure the kid you pick fits YOU...not just because sports writers have a viagra hard on for him.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. If Philbin wanted Matt Flynn, we would have gotten Matt Flynn. If Philbin WANTS Tannehill, seeing how this is the draft and it's a craps shoot and a chess match, if we make a play for him and we get him, then great. "Dr Phil" got his man. If we make a play for him and fall short? Okay, Philbin wanted him but that's the way the draft cookie crumbles. If we don't even make a play for him at all? Then so be it. Philbin must not have wanted him that badly and let it go.
