When Weedon was thought to be coming out in the last draft, I had him rated two rounds better than Mallet.
I respectfully disagree, Mallet is a better pure passer IMO, n it's not even close. But the off field issues were obviously NOT a smokescreen, because the physical tools were certainly there.
Great resarch and writeup guys. I just hope we draft a QB in the dirst round.Whomever it will be we we can be reasonably assured HE will he be our future QB .If there is any bust potential it would be Tannehill IMO simply because he has less of a track record but I doubt he will be a bust. i agree with those that Weeden does not pass through the first round.Teams that need QBs tend to overdraft QBs and rightfully so.I would be happy with any of the top 4 QBs and extremely disturbed with this FO if they overlook this position.
I had Mallett rated as a second rounder before factoring in the off-field issues. The off-field risk dropped him the extra round for me. My big issue with Mallett was how he moved when pressured. He simply doesn't have the feet. That (the physical skills) was what I heard dropped Mallett on most boards as well. And Weedon is one of the most natural passers I have ever seen.
I'd have a hard time deciding between Tannehill and Weeden if they were both 23 and both similarly experienced. I'd probably go with Tannehill b/c I prefer a more mobile QB, but that'd be a tough one. I guess it'd depend on what type of offense I want to run. Similarly, if Tannehill were 28, I'd drop him down the draft and would again have a tough time deciding between the 2. I'd hate to be the GM stuck in that position, you know. Great write up btw. Thanks for all the hard work. If Miami ends up with Weeden, it'll provide for a nice jump start for fans to personalize themselves with the stud passer.
Good point. Personally, I don't like running backs in the top 10 period unless they're the Marshall Faulk type. The only reason I'd say yes to 1st round Richardson and potentially no to 1st round Weeden is b/c Richardson will give you every penny's worth of his initial, inexpensive rookie contract due to immediate impact, where as Weeden could hypothetically take 2-3 years to adjust to the NFL game to where he, too, can impact.... and impact in a manner that suggests winning playoff games on his shoulders.
Weeden & Tannehill are like double bladed swords. You want one younger and the other more experienced, but if that were actually the case, it's likely we're left unable to draft either one (at least not without trading up)....... so I for one am grateful that Tannyhill is green. It means we stand a good chance of landing him.
Am I crazy.....because....I dont think you need to be an expert.....or know that much about the QB position to know Weeden is gonne be a stud. All you gotta do is watch him.......seriously. I just like watching that kid....spin the ball. I said it before....and Ill say it again. He throws a ball....like Griffey Jr would swing a bat. Its art in motion....and its the same way.....every time. And to be honest....Id have to be talked out of taking Weeden over Luck if they were the same age. If I needed a QB, and I was drafting...Id take him as high as I needed to ...in order to get this kid.
There is no wayyyyy.... Mallet is a better pure passer. I cant even remotley see that to somehow.....understand that argument.
There is not a throw Mallet can't make, now decision making is another story. But as far as passing? Gimme Mallet
Only way that happens is if the Fins get Fleener in the 1st and Weeden in the 2nd. I doubt Fleener will not get past the 9er's but IF he does NO WAY the Colts pass on him.
Considering he’s shoulder injury, I just wonder if Weeden is at his peek now and will continue to deteriorate like most athletes do. http://thesportdigest.com/archive/article/when-does-football-player-get-old
Nice article and breakdown as always Chris... So Chris, IF Ryan is not there at the 8th spot, does Miami do it then? Do they try to find a trade down team? IF they do do they then take Weeden lower in the 1st?
If you look at each team behind us in the first I really can't make a convincing argument as to why that team would invest their first round pick into a 29 year old qb....it's kind of a knock but not really when you break down the teams, it's just a poor use of resources..That's why I believe we can trade down.
To be honest, those quotes...I dunno, they don't seem like very good points, as far as the QB position goes. Do golfers all go down hill after 26 years old?
I am now sold on Weeden and am also sold on drafting him or Tannehill in the first round somewhere. Whether we trade up or down I think we NEED to draft one of them in the first and we need to make sure it happens. If we do draft one of them in the first round I firmly believe in committing 100% to them on day one as a starter and a leader (which will obviously happen with Weeden but i think should happen with Tannehill as well). Other teams in the league have drafted qbs in the first round, whether it was with the #1 pick or a mid round pick, and have committed to them 100% and have turned out to be pretty good in recent years (benefit of the doubt to mark gaychez given they went to afc championships and have been contenders and also given that I am biased). We need to give this a shot and and support it if it happens and not do what we did with chad henne. Additionally, we havent drafted a qb in the first round since marino and look at his speculations as a 28th overall. So i say let grab weeden or tannehill and run with it.
I'm very interested in Tannehill after watching his throwing ability. His release is great and he seems like a composed passer most of the time. Weeden, I have to watch way more of his tape first. I need to see how much was Blackmon for myself. Thanks for the article.
With the number of teams in the market for a QB I believe at least 4 QBs go in the first round. I really enjoyed the report and it gave me a much better perspective on Weeden. I would be genuinely excited if either one was drafted by the Dolphins in the first round. Whatever the criticisms are with one of those picks, it would at least be a genuine effort to get a QB in the first round.

So you're saying a statistical analysis of athletes in general is less valid than comparing an NFL QB to a golfer? Are we talking about a caddie going postal and blind siding a player during his backswing?
great write up...tannehill or weeden, whatever they feel is best...and i don't care about value or where a guy is taken vs where he should be taken...i just want this team, for once, to have a conviction on a player...if they think it's tannehill at 8, so be it/or trading down to 3 to get tannehill so be it/or taking weeden at 8 so be it...just take the guy you want...who cares...people get so caught up in value and where these kids "should be drafted"...you know where they should be drafted? where the team that wants them takes them..nothing more, nothing less...if they want a WR in the 1st and think they can get weeden later, fine...i'd rather have them try and fail, than not try at all...that's what bothered me about them passing on Mallett last year...just get a conviction on someone and go get them
I'm jumping in this thread late, but to add on to what you're saying about the crap shoot...and I always seem to find myself referncing football's quarterback god, but who would've thunk Don Shula would have selected a quarterback from a medicore school in the first round whose senior season had 3100 yards passing, only 17 touchdowns and 23 interceptions? If an NFL head coach were to draft a college quarterback in the first round whose senior season numbers were like that, he's be run out of town and yet, how long did it take for some of Dan Marino's records to fall??
OMG... I just got a tremendous woody watching those and imaging Weeden in a Dolphins uniform.... It's been WAY too long since we've seen the Phins with a bona-fide passing game.
I think at this point, as Dolphins fans, we can't afford to get picky. Weeden obviously has tremendous talent, and if that translates, even if it's only for 5 solid years, I'm on board.
It's a contract issue really. Let's say Weeden does reasonably well and peaks in his third season. With any other quarterback, you'd scream "halleluhja" and bury him under a ton of money before he can hit FA at the end of his fourth season. With Brandon Weeden, pushing towards 33, you might not be super inclined to pay him what a desperate team will probably throw his way as an FA. I'm not saying that it'll happen this way but it's a scenario you have to consider. I think Weeden's stock would significantly improve if his rookie contract was for five or six years instead of the now usual four.
I know, right? Sometimes you just watch a guy and you're thinking...it's got to be harder than this, doesn't it? I mean, the evaluation can't be this obvious, can it?
To me that's one of the BENEFITS though. This guy is destined to be underpaid pretty much his entire career. That makes him an even more valuable asset, in a salary cap environment. Remember when Bill Belichick traded for Wes Welker and then gave him a really long contract that paid him something like $3-4 million a year? Same exact concept. He knew Welker was a guy that was destined to outproduce his pay for a long time because physically he's nothing to speak of and would always have his naysayers saying he can't get open by himself, needs scheme, etc. Brandon Weeden is a guy that's going to come into the league on a 4 year rookie contract and like you say, other guys they play 2 years into that contract and if they've shown they're a franchise QB, they've got a contract extension before year 3 is done. With Weeden? I wouldn't be surprised to see him play all 4 years before he gets a new contract, and like you said at the point of those contract next contract negotiations, he'll be 31 or 32 years old, you may even keep him on a franchise tag for a 5th year so that he'll actually be 33 years old by the time you're negotiating a REAL contract with him, and at that point he's a 33 year old guy who hasn't had enough time in the league to have the kind of credibility at the negotiations table as a Drew Brees, Tom Brady or Peyton Manning...even if he's been performing at that level. His 2nd contract still won't pay him much. That's the thing nobody talks about. I'm sure Weeden himself isn't about to try and convince teams by talking about this, because it's an admission that he's likely destined to get screwed salary-wise in the NFL (relatively speaking). But if I'm a GM, that's what I'm thinking. I could have franchise QB play for upwards of 7 or 8 years and really only have to pay him top dollar what, maybe 1 or 2 of those years?
It's not about disagreement. It's about people writing ludicrous statements about players they've barely watched. Capiche.
why trade back when you can take a player at 8 that fills another hole like DE and then trade up with your two thirds for a shot at weeden or tanny?
It's a quarterback league. If Brandon Weeden plays at an elite level, someone will pay him as such - or close to it. Heck, even if he doesn't play at an elite level, someone desperate will probably throw a lot of money at him (see Kolb, Kevin) with the ratio that he'll get another 3-4 good years out of him (see Palmer, Carson). He might not come quite as expensive as these examples, and yes, I'm aware that there's different circumstances involved, but I seriously doubt that he'd come cheap. Wes Welker came cheap because he caught what, 600 yards and a touchdown? If Weeden performs - especially in an environment like Miami - people will be prepared to pay him. But that's not really the potential issue I'm seeing. If he's elite at 32, pay the dude. But what do you do if he performs at, say, Matt Ryan or David Garrard (in his prime) level? With a 25 year old guy, that's basically a non-issue because you can reasonably expect improvement and there's still a big window ahead. With a 32 year old guy, that window is starting to close. Unless Weeden either stinks or blows everyone away, you're bound to be in a pretty awkward situation when his rookie contract is up. I'm not saying that I wouldn't touch him because of it but I could well see FOs ruling him out because it's outside their comfort zone. Especially with a guy like Jeff Ireland running the show.
Fair question. But let's say you trade back with the Tennessee Titans at #20 overall. The price for that SHOULD be their #52 and #82 overall picks. In actuality, one of those picks would probably be a 2013 pick. But let's call it #52 and #82 for now. Trading up from #42 to #20 would cost us picks #72, #103 and possibly #145 as well. So the question become...what would you rather have: 1. The player we pick at #8 overall, let's say Quinton Coples, or 2. Picks #42, #52, #72, #82, #103 and #145? I have to say...I'm a huge Quinton Coples fan, but two 2nd rounders, two 3rd rounders, an early 4th rounder and an early 5th rounder sounds like the more tempting option.
If Tannehill is gone by #8 then I don't see the wisdom in trading back or taking another position and then trying to trade back up for the QB. Our primary goal this off-season is to secure that potential franchise QB. There are basically two guys left that have a decent shot of filling that need. There would only be one left if Tannehill goes before #8. Sure it would be great to get the QB and another top player, but IMO it's too much of a risk. Some unexpected team like Philly (or whomever) takes Weedon and suddenly no matter who we took at #8 our draft is a miss as we whiffed on our primary off-season goal.
