Anyway sadly I couldn't watch the game today because I was at work. One thing I hate about Baseball is the 1:00 start times during the week.

That's the problem with Marlins fans. They care more about feeding their family than following the team.

I impulse-purchased the $15 season-long audio feed from the MLB At Bat app. Listened to the game when I could.

Devils advocate. Why should ANY person have to censor ANY opinion they have in front of ANY group of people?

Kind of ironic that you can't say that type of thing in Cuba, yet can in the US and Ozzie is getting killed over it. Was it smart he said it? Of course not, but this isn't anything new with the guy, he says dumb things almost daily.

So much for freedom of speech huh? No-one is really free to do anything except for certain sanctioned actions decided on by....other people.

Obviously, Ozzie shouldn't have invoked Castro's name at all, but it is 100% clear, if you read the article that he was NOT saying that he loves Castro the man, the dictator, etc.

Ozzie's statement was clearly a joke regarding Castro's longevity despite 60 years of people trying to kill him. He then called him a "mother ******" in the same sentence. Some "love"

Unfortunately, Outrage, Inc. is out in full force and needs its pound of flesh, which it will get today when Ozzie will apologize for saying something he didn't actually say and will undoubtedly make clear that he hates Catro, would kill him himself if he saw him and loves America, baseball and apple pie.

It was clearly a joke and he didn't mean to suggest that he supported Castro the man or his policies, crimes, etc. No fair reading of the article would lead any reasonable person to that conclusion.

But obviously, it's not for me to tell somebody that they shouldn't be offended by the comments. But the insane outrage is ridiculous. It was a stupid thing to say, but far less stupid then the way it's being spun and interpreted.

Its crazy when MOB mentality and bad news "bandwagon" reactions trump reality!

Way overblown, but given our market, you had to expect it. I doubt these comments would even get much attention anywhere else.

That's why it was so dumb for Ozzie to even use Castro as an example at all, even though he didn't actually say what he's being accused of saying.

It's also why I'm not even sure what he's apologizing for. Is it simply using Castro's name without making abundantly clear that you don't like him?

I understand that Castro is a sensitive topic for Cuban americans and that if Ozzie had actually said something along the lines of "I love Castro. He's a great man and a great leader and I don't know what these Cubans are complaining about" then I would agree he should be fired. But he said nothing of the sort.

It's ironic to me, the cuban people that fought for generations to be free, are demanding a man to be fired for saying something freedom gives him the right to say.......his opinion.

Well, if what you say embaresses your employer, or hurts his business then he can do what he wants to you. Freedom of speech doesn't mean you escape all consequences of what you say.

Jeff Ireland didn't do anything that terrible when he asked Dez if his momw as a prostitute, but Ross would have been justified in firing him considering the embaressment he caused the organization (Had to sneak an El Jeffe slam into this conversation). Same thing with a guy like Limbaugh. He was free to call that girl a **** and people were thenf ree to tell companies to stop advertising on his show.

My biggest concern with stuff like this is that we get so outraged by small things, but then let the real outrages pass without comment.

Well, hopefully 5 games is a sufficient enough poundage of flesh to resolve the problem.

Of course there will be some who will still be outraged, but so be it.

The PC already started. Mostly in Spanish thus far.

Made clear that he hates Castro and all other dictators and that he was just trying to say that it's crazy he's been around so long.

No word yet on when he'll praise America and start eating apple pie a la mode, but I'm sure it's coming.

I actually wonder how much of a problem your run of the mill cuban American has with the comments.

Sure there is a vocal sub-group that has made their views clear, but does a high school kid who's grandparents came voer from Cuba really care? I really don't know, but I wonder.

Good question, I am not sure. Just as I wouldnt as offended if someone made comments about the tourmoil for my Irish ancestors, yet those directly hurt would be. Time heals almost everything it seems.

The only difference is Castro is still alive and in power. But to fight and receive freedoms then condemn someone for freely speaking his opinion, especially with it taken out of context like it was, I think is ironic and ridiculous, and utterly overblown.

Well, and everyone has agreed that Castro is a bad guy. Ozzie said something that in context really was not terrible but simply went outside what you're allowed to say in our social norms.

I bet it pissed off the older ones, the ones that had relatives jailed/killed/tickled with french ticklers etc.....the iPhone generation probably doesnt even care, they probably dont even know he said it....

The thing is you have to realize not everybody is as diehard fans of sport as we are, Christ we are on a fan board on the interwebz for a better part of the day...we take the time (most of us anyway), read the articles etc.....I bet most people just walk past a newstand, and see "GUILLEN LOVES CASTRO" as the title....

    yellow journalism at its finest....

yeah sooooooooooooo can the Heat beat the old men tonight please?? Help me silence the yahoos up here...GOD FORBID Boston somehow wins this tonight...forget it...

The difference being that alot of people have family or friends that were killed, or had everything taken away from them because of Castro's regime.
Your ancient irish ancestors are not still around are they?

Lebatard said it best, Ozzie's comments tore open some old wounds for some people.

The media has been irresponsible covering this story on a couple of fronts. First, what Ozzie said was taken out of context. Second, when ESPN wants a Cuban voice, they go to Dan Lebatard, a man who can barely speak Spanish or identify a rooster on calle ocho. A man who has praised Ozzie for being open and honest, while knowing Ozzie was a Chavez sympathizer. He also didn't watch the first game in the new ballpark.

The media here appears loud, generalizing, hypocritical and disinterested in the facts. And hosting "Si o No?" does not make you a Cuban voice.
