honestly, route running is the most easily taught of all the WR skills it just takes good coaching assuming the player you draft is athletic to the degree that his body control is on par for an NFL WR.

It takes the right personality. Most WRs never get it. If they come in running sloppy routes then the odds greatly favor them continuing to run sloppy routes. I think the ability to get separation is the #1 thing you look for. I see it a lot like accuracy for a QB. If they don't have it coming in, odds are they never will.

yeah but if they've never been taught how to run routes or came from a school that's run heavy etc. much easier than fixing the mechanics of a qb who has bad accuarcy. We just haven't had ANY good offensive coaching. You can't really coach ball skills, body control, height, speed etc.

you're right about the personality thing though. That's what theyd get from their scouting/interviews.

don't think we need another W/R
we need a QB to step up & some serious coaching in 2012
    the talent is already there

Route running really isn't THAT easy. Especially routes where you have to make a read and either break off or settle into a zone. If it was that easy every single WR would be a polished route runner.

plus if he's got a corner in his face he has to be able to get the appropriate release needed to set up his route, right? Didn't Ginn have that problem.

Ginn had lots of problems, which hurts me to say because I defended the pick HARDCORE when it happened. Definitely though. A corner pressing you definitely makes it hard to run a good route. There is a lot more adjusting going on than people really give credit for. If it was as simple as people are making it seem you would always take the player with the best measurables and "teach" him the easy part.

added..... it seems that most common fans who have never played the game don't realize that the success of certain routes are predicated on gaining a specific release (either inside or outside).

Asside from the natural, unteachable speed component, ability to "go get the ball" and to some dergree great hands, route running is more of a science. Getting off the jam on the correct side (inside or out), creating seperation, running crisp routes that challenge the DBs to read correctly and do it all in the same timing as the QB! More than it looks.

I'd more equate passing accuracy with having good hands as a pass catcher, in that either you have it or you don't. Generally speaking. It's easier to learn to run crisp routes than it is to develop good hands.

In my opinion the one thing you absolutely can not teach a receiver is how to use his frame to his full advantage. Mainly for larger receivers but it is also important for smaller guys as well but in different ways.

It's why I'm such a big fan of Streeter. Not only is the guy 6'4 but he uses every single inch of his wingspan to his advantage and is great at shielding off defenders deep down the field. Randy Shannon is the reason this kid is going to make someone extremely happy between the late third and early fifth round depending how the chips fall.

Totally but I see it now.

He's interesting as well but in my opinion he just isn't a "football player" and I'm not sure if he ever will be. He has the size/speed combo to be successful but he never showed me anything in terms of the little things you need to be successful. Not a great route runner, plays small even though he is 6'4, I can't even comment on his hands because in reality the ball just never made it's way to him enough. I can remember several plays where he either ran poor routes deep that caused interceptions, took bad angles to the ball, or had it bounce off of his hands on deep throws when the defender was near him. Mainly Golden just asked him to run deep and hope he gets open, because it's really all he was very good at.

If I'm a team already solid at WR I might take a 7th round shot at him but in all likely-hood he goes undrafted.

Rueben Randle has been growing on me, the only thing that concerns me is sometimes he takes the easy way out as far as going down. Some examples I saw were he ran out of bounds at the 2 yard line with a defender on him, I didn't really see the "desire" to pull through and get the touchdown. Another time he was way downfield juking people left and right and then just decides to drop down without anyone actually tackling him. It's odd because on one play you will see him do something special and somehow get by people like he is motivated and the next he will do something like I previously mentioned. Has pretty solid hands and is an okay route runner. If we took him with our second round pick I wouldn't be upset.

Here is a good video to highlight what I like about Streeter. He does drop the first pass of the video though

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjknASkh8lA

    1) Notice how at the 27 second mark he uses his HANDS to catch the ball over his shoulder. Great ball tracking and so many players try to run under it and catch with their body.

    2) The play that starts at 50 seconds. Again hands and a frame. Jacory makes a very ill advised throw but Streeter is able to come back over the defensive player and make a beautiful catch all while shielding himself from the second defender behind him and take the hit.

    3) 1:25 notice how he catches the ball in his hands and is able to take a nice pop from the defensive back and make the reception, also a very nice stutter in his route.

    4) 1:45 Perfect pass and not a difficult catch but notice how he goes UP and gets the ball rather than letting it come down to him.

    5) 2:00 The most impressive part of this play is the speed. He flat out splits the corner and safety on a go route, if Jacory had an NFL arm he leaves them in the dust by a good 5-10 yards. It was a TD anyway but still. Also good use of his body shielding the back defender away on the underthrow, great concentration as well.

    6) Hail Mary play that he probably should have caught, but it shows his ability to get up over defenders.

I feel like this FO noticed how deep this draft class was, so they had a plan to get rid of Marshall, pick up an extra 3rd rounder (to get a solid
#2 receiver) as well as cutting some cap space. Ideally, I'd like to get Alshon Jeffery in the 2nd and someone like Tommy Streeter in the 3rd.

Let me play a little devil's advocate for you because these are the things I see:

    1. LOONG legs make for a long strider and it shows in his stance at the line and how he gets off his stance, which is to say, slowly.

    2. Drops an easy one

    3. Not quick to gather and run after the catch

    4. Pretty shapeless route runner

    5. When does the guy ever have to deal with press? It won't be pretty when he does. Big, easy target, and slow off the line.

    6. That TD into double coverage, just kind of passively waited to see if the ball squirted through the defenders' hands which luckily, it did.

    7. Did the same thing albeit to a lesser degree on what could have been a game winning hail mary. Go up with strong hands instead of trying to cradle the ball with your shoulder pads, they probably win the game.

I don't have Tommy Streeter highly rated. I think people compare he and Stephen Hill but I see a world of difference in those two. Hill has quickness in addition to the significant long speed, plays with fluid hips and burst. I see an urgency in Stephen Hill when he's coming off the blocks, that I don't get with Tommy Streeter, which is why in the Miami game you saw Luke Kuechly successfully covering him deep down the middle of the field. Hill is better equipped to make the circus grabs.

I mean I don't need to go on about Stephen Hill, suffice it to say I'm not high on Tommy Streeter and I think he shouldn't go until Day 3.

I agree that at this point he is a bit sloppy. I personally attribute that to extremely poor coaching. Randy Shannon held back so many highly talented recruits much in the way people believe Sparano did. The first season with a semi-capable coaching staff he progressed worlds and worlds. I believe he can overcome his flaws because for the most part they are simple ones to fix with good coaching, and he has a pretty damn good work ethic from everything I've seen/read.

I can't really blame him for the Hail Mary. That is a ridiculous catch for any WR with two defensive backs all over him. The main criticism I agree with is that he is and probably will remain a long strider. I don't really see that as a negative though so much as just an "It is what it is" type of thing. I'm definitely all for differing opinions.

Honestly I wanted to find a better video but there were none. Watching the games there were plenty of great sideline grabs extending the arms and keeping BOTH feet in bounds. There is a lot to like in my opinion but based on his situation just not enough tape for it to really shine through. He's obviously raw, but when you have a kid with a great work ethic and those physical traits IMO you take a flyer on them.
