The east has been the weaker conference as far as depth for a few years now but that is turning around.

I think the Flyers are in tough to match what they did this year

I don't see them finishing ahead of Pitt, Montreal or Washington next year

    Classy bro...classy! Kudos man.

Not because I'm a fan, but with the youth on this Penguins team, and they high level they're playing at already....if the front office can keep them together we may be seeing the next NHL dynasty.

    These boys are ****ing GOOD.

Great game? The game itself, sure it was entertaining and all it was hyped up to be. The way it ended... terrible. For a rule as stupid as the puck into the crowd/delay of game penalty to result in a power play goal that decides a gold medal game in the World championships, is just ridiculous. Its a stupid rule. No wait, the rule is fine. I like it. It shouldn't result in a 2 minute minor though. Penalize the team by putting the faceoff deep in their own zone, and refusing to allow them a line change, but don't take a player off the ice over something that small. Its ridiculous, and quite pathetic for hockey that a world championship was decided as a result of that stupid penalty. It was put in because they thought teams were doing it because they were tired, and it was a way to stop play and change lines... well if thats the case, then do like i said... deep in zone faceoff, no line change. It should NOT result in a powerplay.

haha wow touchy subject for Penguins fans huh? i was just joking...

im confident going in though... the cup finals is a whole different ballgame and the young penguins will find that out quick enough... gimme the Wings defense and experience to bottle up the young Pens

    We shall see, young Jedi.

Supposedly, that's what the Ranger's defense and superior goalie, and the Flyers more physical style were supposed to do.

Remember one thing...as much as the Pens havn't played anyone like the Wings yet, your Wings aven't played a team as deep as the Pens yet either.

Should be good...bring it on. :D

And BTW...I don't know about you bro. Didn't hear a peep out of you about the Wings until the playoffs started. Now all of a sudden you're a big Wings fan?

I like the rule as it is and Nash needs to be more aware

I also like the 4 on 4 hockey in OT

Looks like going into the 2010 games Russia Canada are the top 2 teams

I want Pitt to win but I can't see them beating New Jersey (Detroit)

The wings play like robots and don't lose their cool. They play a system and stick to it

    I hope I'm wrong but I don't see any 5-4 games

My prediction is Wings in 5 while I'm hoping for Pens in 4

the Stars are (were) probably the deepest team in this playoffs... and the redwings own depth is geared towards defense... offensively we are not as stacked as you guys, but defensively all our lines are very good...

and ive been a wings fan since the early 90s... but if you need proof that it hasn't just been until this playoffs started :nono:

Needed to congratulate the Wings fans as their team beat my Stars. No question, the Red Wings were the better team over the series. They're deep, but even saying that, their first scoring line is very, very good. I don't know what Franzen's status is for the Cup, but he might help with the run he was on. As a Stars fan, you can bet I'm sick of seeing the Red Wings :tantrum:, and I suppose the answer to that is now I don't have to  - unfortunately, the Stars are the ones sitting at home.

I like that Marty Turco got the win in Detroit, and he'll be a fixture in goal for a few years. I like our young guns on defense. I like how the team has sort of transitioned from Modano to Morrow/Ribeiro/Richards as the new face of the franchise. We'll see what happens in the off-season with some of our FAs and what we'll do with Hull-Jackson having their first off-season together. And I like that we got the stigma of first-round playoff losses off our backs. Pretty much, I think we have a bright future, but like all sports, you have to prove yourself every year.

As far as the rest of this season, the two best teams are left standing, and that's the way it should be. Like football, once the Dolphins are out, I don't really cheer for any of the teams remaining. [If possible, I wish they could both lose, :wink2: and I'm betting I'll get half my wish.] I'll just hope to see good hockey games. Best of luck to fans of the Pens and Wings. Should be a really good Cup.

Absolutely agree with Nick Kypreos about the following point. The Pens haven't seen anything close to the quality Detroit has at the back-end.

Ottawa's defensive play was putrid in the last 20 or so games before the playoffs. IMO the Rangers and Flyers have one good puck moving defenseman between them. And he only played in game 5 of that series. I would argue Nik Lidstrom, Brian Rafalski and Niklas Kronwall are probably number 1 defensemen on all those teams. Then you've got defensively responsible forwards like Kirk Maltby, Kris Draper, Dallas Drake, Val Fillipula.

The Wings will be tough to beat, and the Pens will see a lot less room then they've seen to date, but it should be a good one.

    I think they have.

A guy like Chris Chelios has been in the league since 1984 and probably seen everything there is to see. He played in his 248th playoff game earlier this year, breaking the NHL record. Nik Lidstrom has played against the best for years, and been a key part of the past 3 Stanley Cups for the Red Wings. Ditto for guys like Draper, McCarty, Osgood and Maltby.

On the other hands, the Pens have never seen a stage like a Stanley Cup final or to date in the playoffs a defensive back-end like the Red Wings. The only guy that I know will show up because I've seen it firsthand is Gary Roberts, but he's on his last leg.

You really could compare it to 1982–83 when the Oilers solidified their status as an elite team, with a young Gretz, Kurri, and Coffey. They made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, but were swept in four games by the three-time defending champion Islanders. The Pens won't get swept, but IMO if you're looking for a comparison that's an eerie one.

    And the Pens are on the cusp of that IMO. (;

Sure they'll have to deal with free agency, but if they tie up Malkin, Letang, Fleury and Crosby for the next few years, I don't see how they can't be serious contenders every single year, unless injuries start to factor into the equation like they did with the Flyers in the mid 90's.

Great game by the wings tonight. It seemed they started out slow, the pens looked pretty good at the start. Osgood was outstanding when the wings needed him as well which is always nice. Looks like the wings' D totally had crosby and company extremely frustrated out there, and Malkin... where was he tonight... wow, he seemed so lost out there. It's only game 1 though.

And O'halloran should be banned from being a ref in the finals, that guy is a complete idiot. Disallowing that holmstrom goal, AND giving him a penalty... an absolute joke. Just like the other night in Dallas. I believe he was the idiot that made that call to disallow that goal too. He's extremely useless. Why not get some of the NHL's better officials out there... what a joke IMO

This might be one of the first times I've ever disagreed with you on a hockey matter.

I think this year and next might be the Penguins best chance. The cap has to come into play for them at some point and I think the cap, if managed improperly, could turn them into the Tampa Lightning. You can't have Syd making 8+ and Malkin making 9+ and expect to do too much. They are going to lose Malone (who will break the bank in free agency) and Hossa without a doubt. They need help on the backend at some point and they have to decide on Fluery. Is he worth the money it will take to keep him? What will that do to the future financial structure of the club?

As for the Oilers comparison (I've heard it on more then one occasion in the last few weeks) I don't buy it to be honest. That Oilers team was absurd. When they won their first Cup, Gretz, Mess, Coffey, Anderson, Fuhr and Kurri were all in their early 20's (Fuhr was 20). They will never be matched again, especially in a capped league. Their roster was a who's who and their backend was very underrated.

I look back at Gretz's numbers today and they don't seem real to me even though I watched it happen.

I know you don't forget but I think some do forget just how freaking good that team was. I know the sport was different but still...

Another big win tonight for the wings!!!

Pittsburgh really showed a lack of class i felt tonight, and its probably the best example of their youth, and why they probably wont win this series. Lack of discipline, and maturity. The shot to Franzen in the head blindsided by Roberts, was disgusting, and classless. I didnt expect that from him.

and how about Chris Osgood?!?! Doing what he has to do, and making the big saves. Hope we can keep this dominant play going! If the wings get the powerplay going... Look out! thats the only part of their game thats lacking right now.

I will disagree with the lack of class comment. It's called frustration, not a lack of class. Other than that, the Wings are owning them so far. They better figure out how to score.

I could understand the younger guys, and it being frustrated, but Gary Roberts, he's been around forever. He knows better, or at least should than to take a cheapshot like that at a guy just returning from a concussion... I see your point totally and agree until it comes to Roberts... He knows better than to do something like that... at least he should.

Franzen should not be playing if he can't take a love tap. Roberts played great tonight and set-up the best scoring chance

How about Osgood's dive again (second time in the playoffs)

Yes the Wings are playing better (robotic) and will win the series (terrible for hockey) but Pitt still has the home ice coming and hopefully they can spark Malkin

I said before the series Wings in 5 but I'm still cheering for Pitt and hopefully they can turn this series around Wednesday

Bro, you want to talk classless...how about being up 3-0 and taking a dive behind the net like Osgood did that started a brawl?

Don't sing Osgood's praises, he wasn't even tested. The Wing's defense isn't allowing anything. They're completely stifling the Pens.

They better turn it around tomorrow night.

Yeah, i'll give you the Osgood deal behind the net. At first I thought it was a shot to the head, then when I saw it again on replay... It just was oh so clear that Hasek has taught Osgood a thing or two! I think that was a pretty senseless move on Osgood's part. If anything all its done is fire up a few guys.

Not even bro, not even. :wink2: Or heck, I might have been just wondering where you were and trying to get a rouse out of you.

I absolutely agree with ya that the Oilers team will be left unmatched. I didn't see them in action, too young, but I can imagine. What I was referring to was not the future dynasty. A lot of people did that, and while I do think the Pens have a bright future, a dynasty is hard to imagine because of the cap.

To me the comparison was in terms of the particular match-up. I really thought the Pens were one year away, just like the Oilers were in '83 against the Islanders. A young talented bunch that just doesn't have the experience on this stage to match a team of wily veterans like the Wings, or Islanders in those years. You know another comparison that I liked ? Shades of the '96-'97 Flyers. They dominated Pittsburgh, Buffalo and the Rangers all in five games apiece to win the Eastern Conference championship, and faced the Wings in the finals. Incredible young talent, with the famous Legion of Doom line of Renberg, Lindros and Leclair, a young Eric Desjardins, Janne Niinima (when he was good) on the backend, Rod Brind'Amour, Dainius Zubrus, and Vaclav Prospal. Old veteran warriors like Dale Hawerchuk, Joel Otto, Shjon Podein. That was a very good team, but they just wern't ready to face studs like Vlad Konstantinov, Stevie Y, Sergei Fedorov, Igor Larionov, Slava Fetisov, and Brendan Shanahan. They swept the Flyers in four straight games, and the Flyers managed 6 goals in 4 games (this brings back memories!). Similar here situation to me, although I'm not sure they'll get a clean sweep.

To go from sieves like the Pens played in the first three rounds, to a puck possession team with absolute studs like Lidstrom, Rafalski, and Kronwall would be quite the shock. And in the first two games, well, I won't pat myself on the back, but....

lol@a dive... to say he was barely touched is kind of ******ed... did he need to stay on the ground that long? maybe not, but the mule isn't the type of player who does that, anyone who watches most redwings games will tell you the same thing... if it was another player maybe id say it could have been a dive, but not Franzen... sometimes you can get caught and it really does **** you up... especially coming off a concussion... roberts got to him while he was in a defenseless position, got his hands up and punched him right in the face... theres no other way to see it...

First of all, to call me ******ed is to invite me to tell you to call you a douche, so let's try to debate without the insults, capiscé?

Second, watch the video...he pushed him, he didn't punch him

Third, enough with the crying about the "coming off the concussion". If something like that is going to cause you to drop to the ground like you got shot and stay there, you do't belong on the ice, PERIOD.

What if it was a good solid check into the glass? Like someone else said earlier, if a love tap makes you fall, then you should be on the bench.

Watch the end of your video. Franzen thinks he was elbowed. Roberts who is right handed I believe gave him a push or a hard face wash if you like with his left hand

If you ask me the most disturbing thing about that video is how no one went up to Robets from the Wings. Like I said this team winning the cup is terrible for Hockey

They play boring robotic hockey with no emotion. You have your leading goal scorer in the playoffs coming back from a concussion who gets pushed, slapped, hit whatever you want to call it and NO ONE comes to his defence
