Came here to post the above. It is strange that I'm not very worried about RT since anyone we put there will be no worse, and quite probably better than Colombo?
The Dolphins have become the cash cow for done Cowboys and its Parcells ,Sparano and Ireland who are the mercenaries who allowed it to happen.Sparano is now with the Jets scheming to beat us,Parcells has taken his millions and run and Ireland is the rotten apple who is still here to spoil the barrel.
Columbo retired? Does that mean we wont have to keep a TE or an extra lineman out on that side to help cover the right tackle spot anymore?
Not really, we signed Columbo to be a backup RT and Columbo was pretty good for a backup. Murtha was supposed to be the starter but that plan blew up during the preseason. If anything I'd point out that our offensive staff was very slow to adjust to Columbo's pass pro limitations, whether by scheme, which came well into the season, or personnel changes, which never came. If Murtha can come back at 100% we should be in good shape, and I think Jerry is at worst a serviceable RG. Which is good news for those worried that we might take an OL in the first couple of rounds. I think we'll be focused more on pass rushers and pass catchers early on and then look for value picks at whatever position later in the draft, but I'll be glad when Thursday comes so we can stop all the speculation.
I still remember some peeps defending the decision to sign Colombo over Bryant McKinnie last year. Good times.
Not really? It was Ireland, not parcells who signed him. And he sucked. Not even backup quality. Ireland is still an inept joke.
I don't know man! A pretty good backup would mean he should be able to step in and be a competitive starter. So I'd have to say he wasn't a good backup.
What an embarrassing picture. I can still hear Coach: "You give'im a shot that'll straighten'im out."
I don't know you can find a reasonable context you can put Ireland in that suggests he's at all inept. It certainly isn't through comparing him to other NFL GMs. Colombo was awful but that's not him getting his *** kicked, that's defensive holding.
i was hoping we could have worked out a trade to send him and 10 bucks to the ufl for a bag of footballs
I'm thinking about how the players got into the positions that are depicted. 99 basically clocked Colombo, straightened him out, got under him, used the leverage to pick him up off the ground and is running with him backwards into the play. Embarrassing. The hands are incidental.
It a shame he played a couple of seasons too many because over his career he was a good/very good tackle.
Sparano wasn't going to pick former Dolphins to stack the jest team anyways. He'll still pluck from the Cowboys.
Columbo was not a good backup. He was a player who should have retired after being let go by the Cowboys and he was absolutely terrible last season with the Dolphins. As far as Murtha is concerned, exactly what has he shown in his time with the Dolphins which lead you to believe he is the answer at the right tackle position? He is consistently injured and he has yet to show that he is anything but a backup type offensive lineman for the Dolphins. I certainly hope he can be the player some on here feel he can be, but I would not be the least bit upset if the Dolphins use their first round pick to take an offensive lineman, because I would love to see them upgrade the right tackle position and I'm not sure Murtha is an upgrade.
Just for kicks and giggles, wasn't part of Sparano's hush money for Ross trying to hire Harbaugh without firing him first some additional personnel powers along with the bump ?? Could it be this was one of Sparano's deals after all he was the guy's position coach for several years ?? At any rate, Muck was right. Murtha was slated to start at RT before his injury. You can knock a backup guy for not playing well when called on, that's why he's a backup There wasn't a choice once the injury to Murtha...
Whoa, that's some serious speculation right there. And yes, you can knock a backup for not playing well. But Colombo was much worse than "not playing well". He was a DISASTER!
Since we're all taking shots, I think it's fair that Colombo get a few words. That should put in perspective how far this franchise has to go to get back to respectability.
Well, wasn't that part of Sparano's new contract extension ?? I know I'm getting old, but I remember that coming out...at any rate, it doesn't matter. Anyone who dislikes Irish will blame him for signing Colombo and not look back. Personally, while I think Ireland has other issues that take away from his GM ability, his talent evaluation is pretty good. And the bottom line, I personally think that Ross has basically given him a clean slate, including even last year because of the lockout and lack of an offseason. But I have to agree that Colombo was much worse than not playing well. With the bad start this entire time had, Sparano had the whole dam falling in on him. Replacing Colombo was the least of his worries.
