Per Rotoworld - The Dolphins worked out free agent LBs Ernie Sims and Omar Gaither on Monday. Neither player has been signed but we need quality depth and both these guys can compete for starting roles. If the price is right, its a good idea.
Sims would be an interesting signing. Not sure what happened from 08 to 09 though, because since he has just not been the same. http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/9595/ernie-sims
I think he WAS a good player. Though not a game changer. That is what you hope to get, him returning to being a good player.
Obviously we are up against it cap wise...see what kind of shape these guys are in and see what we can sign before and after the draft and who is looking for what kind of cash
Misi is facing felony charges and we didn't exactly have great depth to begin with. We need upgrades.
The more I think about it, the more I am leaning towards wanting Kuechly. It would fill a big need, and watching the film was so much like watching Zach... If we go defense in R1, I hope it is him! And the more I've read and watch Coples, the less I want him.
Sims is a talented player, yes. Good player? I'll just Alen chose to word it very mildly. He kind of reminds me of Marvin Mitchell and I assume he'd fill a similar role, backup, ST type guy. I thought we signed Guyton for that reason but it's good to see we're still looking to improve the roster.
I don't think that really means more linebackers, especially if you're going to be running something that can easily shift into a 3-4.
No, I don't think so. He had a couple good years to start his career but afterwards, he never improved. He's incredibly undisciplined.
Interesting in that they're both a lot smaller linebackers than they've bothered with before. It's also a bit curious that they're thinking about adding another veteran linebacker with starting experience/upside after picking up Gary Guyton. Would like Gaither though, regardless.
Coples is a boom or bust kind of player, If he can be motivated to give 100% all of the time he would be a great player but if he can't be motivated he would be a big disappointment and not even worth a 1st round pick. I think I am leaning toward Melvin Ingram but I find Whitney Mercilus, OLB, Illinois as an interesting player. He led the nation with 13 1/2 sacks last year. Of course this is all based on the Dolphins not going for a quarterback in the first round like most everybody predicts. You know I am starting to warm to the idea of selecting Weeden. I think he is much closer to being ready to start than Tannehill and he has all of the skills and intangibles, his only detractor is his age but he could still give us some good years.
If you like a player that is always in position to make a tackle but dosent because he is a terrible tackler, then yes Sims is your man. I watched him his first few years in Detroit and when he wasnt dinged up he certainly had the speed , but a terrible tackler..maybe he got better at Philly, but i doubt it.
I just made a thread about Mercilus in Club the other day. Reminds me a ton of JPP and Simeon Rice. I find him to be explosive and his first step is enough to put LT's in a big hole. He not only lead in sacks but forced fumbles (9) and total sacks/hits/pressures. He is imo an elite level DE prospect that we could probably slide down from 8 in to the early teens and still nab
Exactly, he started out with some good years. Then his years became...like you said....not so good. We pretty much said the same thing unless you think his first few seasons were a fluke? Which is possible, I don't claim to have seen a whole lot of those seasons.
Love Kuechly but if he becomes a phin he better start day one and will! Dansby moves outside with Misi and Kuechly plays in the middle with Burnett.
