I agree that that the interceptions were mentioned in regards to Marino but I also remember at the time that it appeared the drug rumors were the reason Marino dropped to the Dolphins late in the first round.
I appreciate that you mention the poor receivers both Marino and Tannehill played with in their last seasons, but comparing these two QB's as having elite skills coming out of college makes little sense to me.
Marino was a four year starter for Pitt. Tannehill started only 19 games at Texas A&M and actually started at WR more often than he did at QB.

Marino had excellent overall quarterbacking skills coming out of college. He was able to quickly read defenses and move in the pocket. He was able to make all the throws and was football smart. His release of the ball was the best in the game during his playing days. Marino was ready to start in the NFL from day one and it was all these attributes which made him the elite QB he proved to be during his career.

Tannehill tends to lock on a receiver and does not seem to see the entire field. While he is said to have a strong arm, he is not that effective on longer pass routes. While I agree that Tannehill appears to possess good athletic skills for a QB, I do not see him as having the ELITE qualities coming out of college which Marino showed.

While many of the so called experts seem to be high on Tannehill. I have also seen other so called experts who feel Tannehill is overrated and that he will be the next Jamacus Russel, without the drug problems.
Obviously if the Dolphins select him, we will all get an up close view of his progress over the next few years. While I hope he isn't the selection, if he is, I hope he turns out to be the QB you think he can be. Yet I will guarantee you right now, he will NOT be anywhere near the Elite QB, Dan Marino was.

Used to sit there with my dad and chart out all the rounds of the draft, mock vs real.

Then that eventually ended and I would laugh at how right I was on my drafts vs the experts like Boomer. (Sorry, but he knows I was right more often than not back in our early days together). :)

Nowadays, I do a mock and just sit back and enjoy the 4 DAYS (WTF?) of draft coverage. I will drink a little, over analyze a lot, and then make it up as I go from that point.

marino dropped because of the poor senior season and all the other talent that came out.

I don't know how well tannehill will perform. I think his value is a late first to early second round pick as far as history of drafting goes but it's different now especially with the rookie salary scale. I say if that's who the dolphins wanna go after I won't be angry but if he ends up being horrible or they can't get pieces around him then it's buh bye for fireland and later on for philbin.

I just went back and looked at the 1983 draft and all the so-called talent that went before Marino in that draft. While you had Elway, Kelly, Dickerson, and a few other quality players drafted before Marino. The reality is that most of the first round selections in the 1983 draft were average at best and there were many complete misses in the first round of that draft.

While his lackluster Senior season certainly affected his draft position, I think you are vastly overlooking the drug rumors at the time. In fact it was stated at the time that the reason the Steelers did not draft Marino was because of these exact rumors. I hate even bringing these old rumors up because Marino obviously was always an outstanding individual in the NFL and he remains one today. But if you don't think that these rumors didn't affect his draft status in the 1983 draft, you just seem to want to forget how widely known those rumors were spread prior to and right after the draft, in regards to Marino.

Fortunately for the Dolphin fans, Shula and the Dolphin organization didn't listen to the rumors and as they say," the rest is history".

Tannehill actually threw more passes in college than Rodgers did. And even while playing WR, he was doing the QB meetings. This is after playing QB full time in HS. And since he was in a prostyle offense, he arguably has more experience doing what will be expected of him in the pros than a guy like RG3. I see that argument as lacking merit.

I also consider the "locking on" criticism as poor evaluation. I don't agree that he does that very often and I posted a link to an expert who did a very good job of using pictures to demonstrate that is an inaccurate criticism. Even Mayock, who had made that claim originally, went back over his film study and amended it say that there really only one area where Tannehill struggled with his reads. He stated that it was on going trough his progressions on routes in the middle of the field. Mayock stated that Tannehill would wait for those guys to break open before throwing it, but stressed that Tannehill did not lack that anticipation in other areas of the field. That's almost exactly what I had said about Tannehill in my earlier evaluation of him. It was one of the same criticisms that Rodgers faced coming out. IMO that is easily fixed with experience since he has already demonstrated the anticipation in other routes. The struggles with long passes criticism is another one that he shared with Rodgers.

I have not seen any "expert" who thinks that Tannehill is like Russel without the drug problems. Billick mentioned the names together in terms of how (in his opinion) they both moved up the boards, but he specifically stated they were not similar in any other ways. If that is the single expert (I haven't seen any other make the comparison) that you're referring to then I would question how well you listened when he said it.

As for the comparison to Marino, I don't think they have similar skill sets or styles. And IMO Marino had more than elite skills. They were more comparable to the all-time best skills. But Tannehill certainly has elite skills. I have yet to see any "expert" that doesn't concede that. The "experts" who argue he's over-rated base on the opinion that he's not ready. They do not claim he lacks elite skills or franchise QB level skills.

I appreciate your well reasoned response. The fact is that I did listen to Billick and he also stated that drafting Tannehill in the first round would ,"scare him", if he was still a head coach. Admittingly the comparison to Russell was in regards to the limited number of starts each of these QB's had at the college level and their almost instant rise on the draft boards after the college season ended and going into the draft. I never intended to imply that Tannehill has the same lack of work ethic or character issues which Russell showed during his time in the NFL.

My view is that Tannehill is basically a late second or third round talent. I see him rising up the draft board because of the position he plays and the need for QB's on several teams in the NFL. Obviously I could be wrong about Tannehill going forward, but I also would not be upset if the Dolphins and Ireland do not select him when they pick in the first round. There are several players I would rather see the Dolphins draft in the first round which I feel have a better chance of having a successful NFL career.

I also understand that it is Ireland making this selection and certainly not me making it. If the Dolphins decide to select Tannehill in the first round, I will consider him a new member of the Dolphins and I will hope that he is every bit as good in the future as many on here think he will be. I just feel that Weeden, Cousins, and Osweiler will be equal to Tannehill, if not better than him in the NFL and they can be selected later in the draft. My feeling is that if you select a player in the top ten of the draft, he should be a player you have 100% confidence in as a player who can be a long term starter in the NFL. If this is the way the Dolphins feel about Tannehill, great. I just don't happen to share this belief at this time, but I hope if Tannehill is the pick, he proves me wrong.

By next Thursday evening we will all know exactly in what direction the Dolphins have decided to go in the first round. Until then, everything is merely speculation on the part of everyone on this forum, as well as all the so called, "experts". Right now we are all expressing our opinions on Tannehill because he appears to be the player most likely to be the Dolphins pick. I realize that I am in the minority on this forum in hoping the Dolphins select Kuechly, or another top rated player instead, but that just happens to be the way I feel in regards to the Dolphins first round draft pick.

hmm, well have class on Friday evening, but usually have a couple of frosty ones, maybe some hot wings.

TBH, Day 1 is not as interesting to me as the rest of the rds as one has a good idea who will go in the first rd, but you do not know the order, the second through seventh is a bit more fun for me as it is utterly random.

I guess I will be unoriginal with some wings at home. I use to go to the bar with friends during the draft but they all graduated and left town... And going to the bar... By myself... To watch the draft... Seems rather sad lol. So now I get to spend some more time here during the draft.
