Well I think the pick that fans wanted will end up being the one that gets him fired which is kind of ironic.
There were reports last season that Miami was high on Tannehill so the idea that they just picked him to appease the fan base is crap.
Whether he succeeds or not I'm happy they took a shot on a qb. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take, plus they had insider knowledge on him. Can't wait for the season to start
I've yet to read anything from you that's 100% fact. I trust those reports far more than anything you've posted.
No but come on...a year ago it's reported we are very high on a guy and the next year we actually draft him? Sometimes it's okay to make conclusions based off of evidence.
While you maybe right I think there were reports we liked alot of other quarterbacks in this draft. I also think reports are used as a tool for disinformation in regards to the draft just as much or possibly even more than they are used for actual information.
Seriously I cant express it better then this. 29 years between taking qb's in the first round is way to bleeping long. They could have taken Weeden at 8 and I wouldnt have been upset and I dont even like Weeden as a QB prospect at this level.
Also there was no one left in the draft that I would have been really excited for other then Tannehill. Defense of players are great and offense of linemen are too but nothing to be excited about so yes I am really happy! As John Lennon once said, all we are saying, Give Tannehill a chance...or something like that
i voted yes but the only answer for another draft pick would have been luke kuechly. anything else is just stupid.
If a QB becomes a franchise QB you won't care where we selected him or if it was "too high" or if he sat for 2 years or if you traded up for him. Ask the Giants and Packers about that.
I guess there's a couple people on here that know more about our new QB then our coaches. Can't wait until they become GM's of a NFL team.
If there is one thing that Ireland has shown it's that he doesn't care about what the fans think when he makes his decisions.
How many times have we seen this teams GM's wait until later to pick up a project Qb that they think could be great? Too many is the correct answer. I'm just happy that they finally grew some balls and went after one they apparently love... I'm a fan of Weeden or Wilson but would love to be calling Tannehill "Tan The Man" in the near future if things work out.
YES! You can't compete in this league without a QB. You're far more likely to hit on a franchise QB in round 1 than you're in any other round. Slotted rookie contracts only make the decision easier. As long as an organization does their due diligence, I see no reason not to draft a QB. Even more, who else could the Dolphins draft? Jake Long is the best player on the team. We drafted him #1 overall. How's that working out for us? Yeah, it's nice to have a top 3 LT, but he's not exactly leading us into the playoffs every year. Hell, he's not even leading us to a winning record. Any of the guys drafted behind #8 going to lead their teams to the playoffs? Not unless that team has a franchise QB or a QB capable of elevating himself to that level. Anyone really think Michael Floyd is getting Arizona to the playoffs? Not as long as their QB's are Kolb and Skelton... We drafted the guy best suited to improve our organization long term. Maybe it doesn't work out, but that doesn't mean it's a bad decision. It's like poker. Sometimes you know you' could be beat, but the pot odds are in your favor and you call the raise. We made the right call.
I've been giving this some thought and after sitting back and looking at the overall BIG picture, I do like this pick, but probably not for the same reasons as others have expressed. One of the things we've needed is better play at the quarterback position. Notice I kind of echoed Ireland's words...better play at the position. If I am Matt Moore or David Garrard, this pick sends a CLEAR message to me... Mike Sherman coached Tannehill at A&M Mike Sherman and Joe Philbin are pretty much on the same sheet of music They both think this kid is good enough to draft this high I better step up my game because I'm not losing my job to some snot nosed kid just our of college. In the long run what does this do? Like free enterprise, competition breeds a better quality product...and with Moore and Garrard looking over their shoulder at the kid their coaches felt was good enough to draft this high...it's going to step up their level of play, which is only going to make the "product" (The Dolphins) that much better. Congratulations Ryan Tannehill...welcome to the Miami Dolphins
I'm thrilled. I'm also thrilled he's going to wear a two digit number, 17. I'm sick of the single digit numbers, they've all sucked!
I was very, very happy when they called Tanny's name. It's the first time in a very long time they picked the player I wanted. Actually I wanted Jake Long but they chose him days before the actual draft took place so it wasn't quite the same.
I would have made the same pick. It would have been perfect if we could have dropped down a few spots and still picked him.
I honestly think the kid is going to be good based on what I watched of his time in college. If he doesn't pan out then I won't blame Ireland because for the first time in a long while I'm on the same page. The only thing I can think of doing that would have been different would have been luke kuechly and then trading back into the first for Tanny maybe using dansby as ammo plus the extra picks. What I need to see to make my hatred of ireland completly go away is some of these other picks panning out. Daniel Thomas needs to step up after a camp shortend, injury plauged rookie season. Odrick needs to step it up too but he was also hurt for his rookie season. I need to see Clyde Gates on the field. I also would like to see some help brought in at WR. I'd love for ireland to prove me wrong and show us some hope for the future.
I will tell you in 3 years is such a lame answer. "Will you marry this girl soon" I will tell you in 3 years.. Grow some balls, you like this guy or don't.
As a Longhorn fan, I am very conflicted. I will be rooting hard for him to make it, but I sure didn't see him as a 1st round talent while watching him play at A&M. But I wasn't his head coach or an NFL scout, so I am hoping the much smarter football guys did the right thing. But I don't think we will know for a while, so I am going to wait. Hookem
You never know. I don't think he was picked to appease the fanbase either, but when it comes to a billion-dollar enterprise I wouldn't put any type of dog and pony show beyond them.
Whilst in theory I would have liked to have tried trading down and picking up Tannehill a few spots later, I accept that: 1) it's easy for me to say we should risk it when it isn't my neck on the line if it goes wrong 2) they may have had legit info regarding other teams looking to pick him 3) it doesn't matter now about the circumstances of the selection. He is a dolphin now and I'll be supporting him 100% With a QB picked I'm hoping we can be a little bit value conscious in the rest of the draft, and grab bpa where possible.
I saw saw some pretty serious flaws in his game that made me shy away from taking him, I wanted Brandon Weeden, but he's ours now, and I hope he turns into what we have wanted.
the only other players I would have really liked were the two "sure things": Kuechly (a leader for our D) or DeCastro....but watching this guy failing down to 24...well, if we had picked him at 8th I guess that it would have been a huge reach in the end.... I wasn't on the Blackmon/Floyd/Coples bandwagon, so...in the end I prefere taking a chance on a Qb that should have all the tools physically&mentally, expecially if Sherman is behind the pick (assuming he knows how to evaluate a QB )
Tannehill would not have been my pick at #8 if I had been doing the selecting. I would prefer to take a player that high in the draft who can come in and make an impact immediately. The Dolphins though spent a lot of time researching Tannehill and his former HC is now the OC of the Dolphins. So what I would have done is totally irrelevant, and now that he is a member of the Dolphins, I hope he turns out to be the best damn pick in the entire draft. I will be happy to eat crow for my negative comments regarding Tannehill if he turns out to be the franchise QB many on here think he can be. I guess we can all revisit this selection in about three years to see how the Tannehill pick turns out.
Well I am, the Dolphins were a bit like that dude at the club who kept TALKING about going up to chat with the hot chic at the club, but never quite could do so. I'm not a huge fan of Tannehill, however if he put a nail in the bull**** "big man's game" theory, I'm, 100% in favor of taking him.
I have tried to get excited about this pick. I can't really do it. I'm not completely negative on it and I have no choice but become a huge Tannehill fan now but I also cannot shake the idea that we could have gone a better route. Everyone I've heard is in agreement that Tannehill is a project that rose as high as he did based on athleticism. That's a red flag for me because the biggest issue for a QB IMO is the mental ability to do everything a top QB needs to do in a short period of time. 8th pick in the 1st round for an unpolished QB project is too big a gamble for me. The fact that he worked with Sherman and did learn in a pro ready system does lower my nervousness and is what I'm clinging to for hope. Having said that, I really feel the better play was to take a player at 8 that has the best chance to be a top player and an impact player at his position. We were in position to do that. Keuchly I believe could start day one and will be a future All Pro at the position. Word was that teams were looking to move down in this draft all over the place. We would have had a chance to trade back up in front of the Browns and land Weeden. I do however have to respect the fact that they are gambling on a QB for the future. I'd rather them reach on Tanny then not address it at all. I'll be optimistic.
