Martin is a good value pick. I assumed we would go Massie here because Martin would be long gone. Fits my theory that Miami is only looking for athletic linemen in the 295-320lb range (Martin is 312lbs).
I'll post what I did in the draft thread, this is what I think of the pick. "With a young QB it's a huge advantage in their development to provide pass protection. It gives them a chance to sit in the pocket and learn to read plays/watch them unfold instead of running for their lives. Even if he never becomes a plus run blocker at RT he should definitely be a plus in pass protection. At the moment that is MUCH more important. If he can just be a good run blocker he will be fine."
hes athletic but had a really ****ty pro day that's why he dropped good pic I think. he was also really sick at the combine.
I would rather have seen a receiver or pass rush guy, but we definately needed a Right tackle. I'm good with this. It's a deep draft for receivers.
Ah, I remember that now...thanks FFG for the reminder... I couldn't remember why he had slipped some... Again, I think if we can fix the OL, we might not have such bad QBs (as many here contend...).
I really like this pick. This pick reads Joe Philbin all the way. Smart, athletic OT. Jeff Ireland is listening to the coaching staff. Which to me means he is being smart. Philbin should be happy with this pick. He has talked since he was hired about upgrading the OL. If, God forbid, Long is hurt or not resigned he can potentially slide over to be a good LT on teh cheap.
But he does allow the QB to throw TD's to to receivers and give him more time to make better decisions to prevent turnovers and keep him getting sack. Just sayin'.
well we know Jonathan Martin is a bad mofo. he was asked on finsiders "have you thought of the players you'll have to try blocking(Mario Williams)?" his response "im not going to try and block him, i will block him.
His 3 cone and short shuttle at his pro day were very good. Had he did those times at the combine it would have been 6th of 21 among all offensive tackles in the shuttle, and 7th of 21 in the 3 cone. His vertical would have tied for 2nd at the combine. His broad jump would have tied for 3rd at the combine. His forty time and bench were not good, but forty times are not most important for OL and he can add strength.
I can imagine him lining up in front of Williams with the famous line from Rocky IV "I will crush you" ^ I think thats a good thing, the balls.
excellent 2nd rd pick http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...video-highlights-scouting-report-and-analysis now on to the third round!
Just giving my opinion. Not trying to be a pessimist. But, heres 3 games from 2010. Kinda disproves every scouting report about him being a great pass blocker and below average run blocker. Seems like the complete opposite in all of his videos (here is just one though). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsB5VMPs7fU 3:53- Speed rusher dominates him on the inside (leads to hurry) 4:03- Speed rush dominates him to the outside (leads to hit on Luck) 4:23- Completely gives up on the play (leads to sack) 4:31- Gets beaten on the inside (leads to Luck being forced out of the pocket) 4:41- Run play, but still gets beat by a speed rush 4:50- Speed rush beats him to the outside (leads to sack) 5:02- Gets beaten on the inside (leads to hit on Luck) 5:12- Gets absolutely blown up by DE (leads to hurry) 5:21- Beaten by spin move (leads to hit on Luck and INT) 8:59- Gets blown up by DE 9:18- Beaten on the inside (leads to hurry and INT) - also looks like he got flagged with a hold on that play 12:16- Not a negative, but he's literally matched up on a guy that isn't even rushing the passer 12:52- Gets beaten by speed rush on outside (leads to safety) 13:00- Beaten by speed rush to the outside (leads to Luck being forced out of the pocket) 13:12- Again, beaten to the outside (forces Luck out of pocket) And that's only his negatives from pass blocking plays.
I'm sorry, but you're way off here. Those highlights show me that we got a steal. That's absolutely a first round talent there. Luck had a bunch of negative plays too, you cannot just cherry pick a few bad plays and say that is how he plays.
Didn't you know that all NFL teams use youtube videos for their evaluations on all the players in the draft?
I know what you're saying. Remember the Vernon vs Jake video that "proved" Long couldn't handle speed rushers? Not, that this video was as silly as that. All and all, I'd say this video was well done, but the thing that gets me is even if this video was the only thing you had to evaluate the guy on, I'm happy with the pick. The evaluation of the people that put the video together was first round talent.
Fiesta Bowl (Oklahoma State vs. Stanford) is about to be replayed on ESPNU if anyone wants to take a look at his last collegiate game.
Not to be a negative Nancy but he dont expect a very good run blocker...good news is he is a real good pass blocker so perhaps a good sign for what we plan to do.
Well it's like I said: Having a young QB it is extremely important to provide him with good pass protection so he can learn to sit in the pocket and make NFL reads. He will never do that if he's on his back all the time.
I think he needs to get stronger. I really can't fault this pick. Martin is a great pass blocker and if you're being true to your board, he was probably the highest rated guy there. I think I would have gone with Curry there, but Martin was certainly a reasonable selection.
I don't mind the pick at all personally, fills a need and good value....he just needs a lil more work to be the "steal" some think he is. Need WR and CB here today
I really want to punch one of these "linemen don't score touchdowns so lets never draft any" people in the face. They're not playing 7 on 7. This isn't flag football. You can't have your quarterback throwing touchdowns from his back and RBs can't gain yards getting hit 2 yards behind the LOS. All the WRs were pretty raw IMO. This guy in the second round is a great value and will most likely be a day one starter at RT on a line that almost set a franchise record for sacks allowed last year. If you're gonna take issue with a pick that wasn't a WR look no further than the project DE/3-4 olb from UM or the TE that disappeared in his senior season. That's where the WR help should have come from.
