That he was chosen in the 7th round (and Miami's 2nd pick in the 7th) says a good bit about the long shot that he is (really, that both WR's are). But, here's a nice piece on Matthews: He measured 6'0, 212 & had a 36 vert & 20 reps at the ill-fated combine. In 12 games, 91 catches, 1364 yards, 15.0 avg., 8 TD's. NFLCom notes that he is not an explosive player but he did have a 13.3 PR avg. Maybe we'll get lucky - which we rarely do.
It's hard to believe a guy who isn't explosive put up those statistics and ran around a 4.45 at his pro day with a 36 inch combine leap.
From what I understand about the kid, he's really poor at creating separation but makes good plays in traffic.
One positive for this kid is his ability to get RAC and break tackles. Looks strong and fast. If he can be trained to run good routes, he could be a player to have some impact. All these guys should be ordered to spend a week with Bess on how to catch passes. Bess is not a great player (not the elusive route running of Welker) but his hands are as good as any WR in football. The key will be whether Matthews runs routes well. If he can learn to run routes well in the WCO - he could be a player.
Just posted in another thread. I've seen his 40 times listed from 4.45 all the way to 4.73 and in between. That's a big range. Any know additional info that hints as to what his true speed is?
ran a 4.44 at his proday CR.. http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=110178&draftyear=2012&genpos=WR
syas in the OP that he was hurt for some of those 40 times. welker is way better than bess, doesnt matter what team either is on.
Dude is FEARLESS inside. I like his angles upfield. Not fast but very deliberate in his movement. Smart about where he takes the ball.
Just based on that video his routes are awful, however, he looks really good with he ball in his hands. Something very useful in the WCO. Could have a shot to make this team.
Do you remember what Welker looked like here? Pretty much EXACTLY like Bess. Welker is a scheme player and I don't even believe he could be very successful without an elite QB. He'd be stuck on 600-700 yard season with almost any other team in the league.
Welker does everything better than Bess, system helps but as far as ability I see no comparison. Give me Amendola over Bess any day of the week.
Bess put up better numbers in his seasons here with equally bad offensive teams and systems. I honestly don't see anything Welker does better than Bess other than return punts. But it's personal opinion. I never liked Welker even when he was here. He screams overrated to me.
That never discourages me, most of the time that can be corrected if the player is willing to learn and work at it with good coaching, unlike having bad hands which is something that might never be corrected.
I believe that both he and Cunningham make the final roster. But, if I had to pick one it would be Matthews.
I suspect Cunningham will be better, really like Cunningham, I "know" some folks do not like his game I just see some hand use and body control that most aren't seeing in Cunningham. What I'm looking for this preseason cycle is a speed coach to be added as if you look at the guys we drafted typically they were highly productive, larger, Wr's who may lack speed. To me that means they have a plan to run those fellas to death to up their explosiveness.
IMO the poor combine when he tested while injured and the reputation of the pistol offense (expectation of inflated stats).
He does need to tighten up his routes, but he is very good with the ball in his hands. For whatever reason though, the way he carried the ball annoyed me to no end. I'm surprised he doesn't fumble a bunch.
Both have great hands. Wes though has a much better ability to create space with cuts than Bess and get open (in spite of the fact that every person in the stadium knows the ball is likely going his way); as well as incredible instincts to find the seem in zones.
Couldn't disagree more Alex...I had Welker ascending to what he is today when he was with us, best slot in the game by far, multiple probowl player..Absolutely despised the trade then, and still do.
Not to mention Welker has 100 times the ability after the catch that Bess has. Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk 2
