again, zero substance to your post. Frank Gore, Jimmy Graham. pretty high impact.

    Kinda OT.

I heard Lewis on the radio Friday talking about the '96 draft.

He said it hurt when the Dolphins passed on him. That was his home team and where he'd have liked to go.

They asked him if he remembered the linebackers chosen ahead of him, and he starts rattling them off. Player, team, number selected. It motivated him.

That's on Jimmy though. He had no issues with access, with his history there and his protege Butch being the head coach. He did get us Zach in the 5th. But Ray is the best player out of that draft and arguably the best LB of all time.

so we're going to ignore the lack of first round talent the hurricanes have been putting out compared to years past? the program went on steep decline with a FEW exceptions like grahm. The big blue chip guys aren't going to miami like they used to because they havent been good. Do you buy stocks when they're on their way down or do you try and catch them before they boom? Again, nothing but a PR move that would have had more football value ten years ago.

maybe the new regime at UM will prove different but this last coach def did some damge to the brand.

You clearly havent been paying attention to Golden's recruiting classes. Or the fact that Shannon and his staff did a piss poor job of devloping players,

Yup, your right, it was ten years to late, so if you believe that then you must think that Ireland should be commended for starting the next 10 on the right foot.

Just look at the rosters of many of the ACC and SEC teams from outside Florida and take note of how many of their best players come from Dade, Broward and Palm Beach County high schools. It's a lot. It would be great if the U was able to get more of them to matriculate close to home.

I think Ireland's comments were totally sincere. Al Golden is a helluva good coach. Nothing wrong with Jeff giving him some props. Best coach they've had since Jimmy.

this adds to my point of the school being on the decline. Maybe tate turns it around but that's a big maybe.

I will openly admit that I don't know much about Olivier Vernon. And I'm ready to be inundated with Canes fans telling me how great he is. But there was much better value on the board, even at the DE position, when he was picked. So I'm really not very thrilled about that move. The Lamar Miller pick I thought was a good one. But overall it felt like they were trying to placate the fan base with this draft. Instead of going in thinking "How can we get the best players to make this team better?" it seemed as though they were thinking "What novelty tactics can we use to put butts in seats next season?" Look, I understand it's a business and it's all about putting butts in seats but if you put a winning product on the field you don't have to use gimmicks and try to pander to your fan base to get them to come out.

A lot of you love the Canes, and I'm sure you're happy about having some of your favorite players on the team. I would be ecstatic if we somehow landed Barron or Upshaw or Hightower etc. But I see two issues with this strategy. The first of which being the talent coming out of Miami now is nowhere near the level it was in the 80s and 90s. You can argue with me all you want, but you know it's true. It's just not a good time to start this "relationship between the Dolphins and the Canes" in my personal opinion. It would be one thing if we were talking about a partnership with a school that was producing 1st round talent, but their top drafted player went in the 3rd...to us. That's a significant drop off in talent from the days of "The U." The talent just isn't there anymore, it's all going to the SEC where kids know they'll get national exposure, a possibility to win a national championship, and have the ability to come out prepared for the NFL.

Perhaps Al Golden will change things. Maybe he can recruit guys and cultivate talent into 1st round picks that will benefit us in the future if we continue this "relationship." It's certainly within Golden's power to do that. But at this particular point in time I just don't see the rationale behind it.

Also, if we really wanted to take Miami players why didn't we take Tommy Streeter? The guy has the ability to be the best player out of Miami in this draft and at a position of need.

I also don't sell my stock with a knee-jerk reaction because a company hits a lull. there may be less blue-chippers per draft now than a few years ago, doesn't mean it's not still a valuable resource. Jimmy Graham is arguably the best TE in NFL. and the fact that the U is being overlooked means you can get potential better value in the draft or with UDFA. Look at Sam Shields. he pretty much won the game for Green Bay to help them go to the superbowl as a rookie.

bottom line: As of the 2011 NFL season, UM had the most players active in the NFL of any university in the nation

I'm a Big-10 fan, but given the choice between the overrated players of Ohio State or the underrated players of U Miami, I'll take the latter.

You're embellishing to try to prove a point. Gronk is better than Graham and until he retires or can't do it anymore Gonzo is the best TE in the league.

yeah I dunno I love the canes and wish we drafted more of the better ones that come out but this whole draft was pr for ticket sales to me. They draft a qb who won't impact the team at all this year but the fan base is happy. Then Ireland gets to draft his Oline that he wanted then they load up on 2 canes guys to please the people who ***** we never draft canes. This draft is ok going forward but we got maybe 1 impact player for this year so its going to be along year for sure.

    1. That would be a matter of personal opinion. I liked Ronnell Lewis at that spot, but apparently JI had Vernon graded higher.
    2. It's been fairly well agreed upon by most analysts and pundits that he isn't an ideal receiver for the WCO.

And to go so public with it...perfect Ireland, perfect, I get it..and it's a beautiful thing.

I most certainly am not embellishing. Gonzo is till a top 5 tE and the best of all time, but both Graham and Gronkowski are better right now. You put Graham in patriots offense, he plays just as well as gronk

It's also an attempt at correcting the Sam "How can you not know who the defensive backs coach is?!" Shields mistake.

The Lamar Miller pick also lets the team place Reggie Bush anywhere BUT the most interesting thing about the pick is that Reggie Bush will probably not be here next season. So grabbing a potential game breaking Rb in the 4th round of a draft could very well turn out to be far more than good. It could end up being genius....

The Fins need to develop a "special relationship" with at least one school in every conference in Div I, II, and III. Not only from a pure talent acquisition standpoint, but also as a way to get a college-level perspective on players for rival teams (which would help talent acquisition).
