Does drafting Tannehill change your view of Ireland?

Tannehill was a Philbin thing, not a Ireland thing.

 

They made an offer to Flynn on a multi-year contract that was roughly an average per year of what Garrard got on a 1 yr deal. When you see Ireland say he has been scouting and high on Tanny since 2010, it seems pretty apparent to me, there is an excellent chance we'd have still drafted him even had we signed Flynn.

 

Cosign and to add a point, o line is more important to winning than RB because a great oline/scheme will be better for you than a RB like miller. For examples see the cowboys of the 90s and clinton portis in denver. the only exceptions are players in the mold of AP, Barry Sanders etc.

*Disclaimer, I acknowledge emmit smith as a HOF running back and all time great but the talent level of AP and others....hell even a Terrel Davis is far superior IMO.

 

Ireland was high on Tannehill long before Philbin was hired. Ireland said that he felt Tannehill was a first rounder since last August and we know Ireland was personally meeting with Sherman about Tannehill last October.

I didn't miss your point, you wanted us to sign Matt Fylnn so we could go in another direction with our first pick, I didn't want Matt Fylnn because he is Matt Flynn.

 

I'd say Clay would be the FB in most two TE sets. We may be flush with talent at TE now. Our newly signed Les Brown is someone we have no idea yet how well he'll turn out. Mastrud has been a solid blocker and may develop as a receiver yet. Will Yeatman is as raw as an uncooked t-bone steak, but has the size and movement skills to at least be another Hunter Goodwin type of player.

 

No problem at all with BPA. I just don't get trading up for a RB. I think that's a strategy that only teams with most major needs (specifically QB) can afford. I'd rather have seen a safety drafted. Granted, I have no knowledge whatsoever if there was one there worth taking, but if there wasn't I'd just rather BPA at our pick. I don't want to dwell on it and I'm sure Ireland knows a hell of a lot more about this kid than I do but I didn't like the trade up for RB last year and wasn't keen on it this year.

 

To give up 2 lowly 6th round picks to move up and select a 1st round talent in the 4th round is nothing.

If we didnt move up and Miller turned out to be a productive starter in this league for a while, you wouldnt be pissed if they looked back and could of given up two very very very long shots to make the team, much less contribute, to move up and taken the guy?

Hell, people would beat the drum to death if we still havent found the answer at RB, and Miller was taken in the 4th and we failed to select him in the 3rd.

We still had a 6th rounder. Low low price to pay for that kind of a player.

I don't understand the outrage of cutting Bell. Every year since he's been here he has always been on the list of possible cuts.

How did we fail to land Flynn? Because he isn't on the team? lol, I guess we failed to land Brady too since he isn't on the team.

 

There's not an option for "No, I never doubted his ability in the first place". So, I'm recording it here.

 

This was a really talent poor draft for safeties. And who says Miller wasn't BPA on the Fins board and Ireland had information that suggested a team ahead of the Fins was going to take him if he was available? Sometimes you have to jump the line to get the players you want.

 

How did we fail to land Flynn?

WE DIDN'T WANT HIM. We offered what we wanted to pay. He said no and went to the highest bidder.

We refused to pay his price. That's not "failing"

 

What I like seeing is he is showing he is his own talent evaluator. Not once did we see a typical Parcells type pick as to where he'd take which position in the draft.

The book is still out because the record of the team has been horrible but hopefully the hiring of Philbin will show that he can bring in a coach, who along with his staff, can actually teach these players to make the draft picks stick and play well...

It's not exactly news. The smart folk around here know Ireland never had full control, just the title or else they wouldn't have been allowed to hire him away from Dallas. Parcells has always been the guy who "does the shopping".

Anyone who can't tell the difference between such in the very drastic difference in the last 2 drafts...well they'll always be oblivious.

As for the Flynn debate, anyone with common sense and not wearing a tinfoil hat can tell they didn't want Flynn that badly. They offered him "competition" money. Seattle doesn't see him that way either, hence why they drafted another QB and fully plan to have an open competition at QB.

Funny story, so Kiper and Mcshay were on and Mcshay said something stupid like why is Flynn in Seattle, and Kiper looked at him like he was an idiot, and said, do you not know who the head coach of the Miami dolphins is?, he's the same guy that's been working with him for 4 years, if Philbin wanted him he would be there", everyone laughed at Mcshay like he lost his lunch money, lol, it was freakin funny..

I think the ones who continue to not understand this elementary topic are ones who thought that he was good enough in the first place.

 

Even tho your line of thinking some makes sense (it being a safe pick), I can't believe even Ireland would make a pick, any pick but in particular the first round pick based on what the fan base wanted or expected him to make...just not something that is in these guys' DNA, whether the pick is right or not, it was made because Ireland thought that was the direction he should go in...

 

Like I said, I know not one thing about the player so if he turns out to be a special player that Ireland landed in the 4th and just gave up whatever picks it was in the 6th round, I'll happily eat crow. I think I'm just still a little salty about the trade up last year and projecting it onto this year's trade up event.

i will give it up to Ireland if we have a good team this year and will lay off the guy but if we suck then I will be down on the guy more if thats the case.

 

Its the exact same thing as Fisher too. If we were willing to give him what he wanted, he'd be our coach.

 

Bell should have took a pay cut and while I'm not a fan of trading a player of Marshall's caliber, I will wait to see who he replaces him with. At one point or another, he will have to address the Wr position again but you cannot fill as many holes as there were on this team in one draft. We'll now get a chance to see if Marlon Moore, and Wallace are ready to step in and contribute. I've read that we might not recognize Marlon Moore because he has bulked up big time so it looks like they want too....

If not we can bet that Wr will be tops on the list next season

 

They knew Marshall was a risk, took it and it worked out for a year or so...last year, the old Marshall reared his ugly head...simple as that...now he's gone and we got something for him...I wish him [and Chicago] luck... I give him at least this season before he starts issues, particularly if they can't overcome GB or Detroit...

I think Ireland's remarks indicate more that Tanny was the plan, not Flynn. It wasn't about us landing Flynn, it was about Flynn signing on here to continue to prove himself by battling for the position..he took more money to go to Seattle.

If you watched Bell last season, you can see he's just about done. He's been a good player for us, but at $6.2M, he was not a good value for us given his declining play... Father Time has caught him...

 

If Matt Flynn was plan A, he would be here right now. They did not fail by not signing him. They told him that his value was not what another teams was of him...

 

I think Daniel Thomas has proven he's a solid player. The fact is that K-State runs a spread zone-read, so coupled with a lockout-shortened off-season it stunted his first year development a bit. In short, I expect that Thomas will do very well this year. As for Miller, I think they drafted him to replace Slaton immediately and Bush after this year, so I'd give the guy a year to show his stuff.

 

I have been a harsh critic of Ireland for over a year. I decided a few weeks ago to stop demanding his firing and give him one more opportunity to prove me wrong about his abilities as an NFL GM.

My attitude right now is that last year the Dolphins beat the Bills twice and the Jets once. They also lost several close games and played very well against the Patriots in the first half of their last game of the regular season. Ireland has now had another free agency period and another college draft to improve the roster. Based on expectations at the end of last season, the Dolphins should at least be able to finish no worse than second in the AFC East this coming season.

If the Dolphins can finish at least second in the division and have a 9-7 or better record, I will be glad to admit that I was wrong about Ireland as an NFL GM. Yet if the Dolphins once again finish below 500 and in third place or God forbid, last place in the AFC East division. I think it will be time for Mr. Ross to seriously consider replacing Ireland as the teams GM.

To me, this is the year for Ireland to show he is up to the job or he needs to take his scouting skills elsewhere.

This has been the consistent story about when Ireland started liking Tannehill. There were reports about this way before Philbin and way before the draft. It was known that he personally was talking to the TAMU coaches about Tannehill back in October. There is nothing to support those who keep claiming that the pick was about caving to the fans.

 

I maybe in the minority, but even if Tanny turns out to be a big fat bust as a QB, it should not cost Ireland his job. He believes Tanny is a franchise QB, and many other folks who are or were in his position agree with him. It is not like he plucked a potential franchise QB out of left field and took him far too early. Tanny was a slight reach if all positions are considered equally, but since QBs are valued differently, he was no reach at all. QBs are also one of the toughest positions to predict for NFL success. So to me, if Ireland hitches his reins to Tanny for a couple of seasons and he doesn't pan out, I'd say thanks for trying Jeff, keep looking.
What if we have a plethora of injuries and or the QBs all struggle and we end up picking 1st or 2nd in the next draft? Would you pass on Matt Barkley given the chance to take him? I would not. Jeff needs to keep shoveling til he gets the QB thing right.

What I like about that article is when they talk about him in Dallas...My whole position is simple, he's had the power for two short years, I understand that he isn't the smoothest when it comes to social hour, but my intrigue is with his talent as an evaluator, because I firmly believe that the draft is a franchises #1 priority, so I will sacrifice the personality, for the eyes, and we need this year to see if he truly has them, we need to see how last years class improves and how this years class flashes..then we can make a more educated opinion.

 

so when you see one of these WRs drafted with the pick or similar value that we got for marshell you let me know. the only WR I can think of recently was colston who is not as good as marshell talent wise.

Look, I didn't want marshell when they got him. Sure it was nice to have the talent but I knew he was cry baby diva and I knew he'd be pissed about our horrible offense. now that we've had him and already paid for him it's stupid to let him go for less than what he's worth to our franchise. It was a bad move all around from signing him to letting him go. I can say when ireland does something right and I do. When he does something I think is stupid, like this, I'm going to voice my opinion. I'm not a cheerleader.

 

Marshall's best year was worse than Chambers' best year here.

 

Too early to tell for me. Nice to finally see a gamble of a QB in the first round, and I like the kid. Guess we'll see how he pans out in TC.

With new everything, I'm good with giving grace all around to the team. Altho I don't expect a SB run, a successful season would just be fighting for a playoff birth in the ending weeks of the sked rather than be out of everything by week 6 or 7. Time will tell...

 

I absolutely agree that the Marshall trade wasn't a good one, we did not recoup the value we gave up, it was a mistake.

 

I voted 'too early to tell' (and without having read most of this thread) I'd just add that I like that Ireland has broken with the old school Parcells approach to drafting/free agents. The drafting of Tannehill broke most of the 'rules' by Parcell for example. Is this just desperation time for Ireland though? Or a real change in thinking?

The rest of the draft can bust, but if Tannehill pans out as a good QB then Ireland is safe for quite some time.

 

What I've read about Flynn is that he felt much more comfortable with the situation in Seattle; that the Seahawks GM made a concerted effort to make him feel comfortable and that Ireland didn't make any effort of that sort.
