I see a lot fans today acting like every draft pick is going to be a contributor. Not happening. If there are 3 quality starters from this draft in four years, Jeff Ireland did a great job. If there's more, he's a genius. Lets look back at the '08 draft and see what Ozzie Newsome and Ted Thompson managed to acquire. Ozzie hit Flacco in R1 and Ray Rice in R2. Those two are the only legitimate starters he got from that draft. He hit on backups/special teamers in Tavares Gooden and Tom Zbikowski in R3, and Haruki Nakamura in R6. The other five picks from that draft are out of the league - including a 3rd and two 4th rounders. Ted Thompson hit on Jordy Nelson in R2, Jermichael Finley in R3, and Josh Sitton in R4. The rest of that draft are either at the bottom of the roster or on other teams. He also selected Brian Brohm in R2 and DB Patrick Lee in R2 who has started all of 1 game in his career. So lets try to keep expectations realistic with this class.
I only care about hitting with one pick. QB. If Tannehill is a hit, i could care less if all the other picks end up out of the league in 2 seasons. Consequently though, if Tannehill is a bust, hitting on all other picks will seem somewhat diminished. Bottom line, hope Tannehill is a franchise QB.
I won't. I want every draft pick to stick every year. I want us to win every game. I want to win every playoff game. I want to win every Super Bowl. I want every game to be 62-0.
I know most of you guys are realistic but it's just funny reading stuff post draft. Every fanbase thinks their 6th and 7th rounders were absolute steals and could be starters. I remember when I thought Cecil Collins was going to be our answer at RB in '99. Luckily I've matured a bit since then. Anyway, I'm cautiously optimistic. It's a good looking draft on paper, but the '08 draft of two of the alleged best in football provides some nice context.
I'm actually waiting for the years of crappy drafting to start evening out with years of exceptional ones.
What u have posted is common sense. But we all know this Draft was built around needs and that should be applauded. Whether they pan out is a crap shoot but weve drafted players with POTENTIAL IMPACT. Been a few yrs since weve done that. I just want an Elite O-Line. Build around that and QB, WR, RB will benefit from it.
MY expectations are tempered. But if you can't get excited for a young team being taken over by a smart coach with a great pedigree then what CAN you get excited for!?
I'm glad you posted that, because I was getting a little carried away with the whole "feeling good about the draft" thing. Thanks for being the wet blanket I needed jinx!
I expect one or two of the players drafted to eventually become starters. A few of the other players drafted should be special team players and contribute as backups on the offense and defense. I don't see any future all pro players selected in this draft. I see this as a decent draft but certainly not a great draft. If Tannehill works out and in three years becomes a quality NFL QB, I will rate this draft an , "A", no matter how the other players drafted turn out. On the other hand, if Tannehill doesn't pan out and he ends up a bust, I will grade this draft a big fat , "F". To me this draft was all about having a top ten pick and the Dolphins deciding to spend this pick on a player who may or may not end up as a quality starter in the NFL.
I think that we could wind up with four starters from this draft, not because Ireland is a genius but because our talent level at that position is so depleted: right tackle, tight end, running back and quarterback.
I understand RT and QB. But we go pretty damn good current starters at TE and RB. Thats not debatable. So I would say if those two did becomes starters, it is in fact because Ireland made great choices. Seems like you just dont want to give him credit. Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk 2
I'm like Jeff Ireland. "Maybe I'm naive enough to think we can hit on every pick" I actually expect our first five picks to be extremely good. There is no in between with Vernon. He's either going to be Jason Taylor (game really reminds me of him) or Vernon Gholston. Martin either starts at RT or he is a bust. Lineman don't have in betweens. Neither do RB's really. You're either explosive and make plays or not. Same with Egnew...he isn't a special teamer. He's either a receiving threat or nothing. From there on I don't expect too much but it never hurts to be hopeful.
I don't like to be told what to do. If I want to have high expectation I will and I don't give a rip what you think. In 1974 the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, John Stallworth and Mike Webster. They also added Donnie Shell as an UDFA. How'd that work out?
I don't know about starters (I hope there are 4 or more), but realistically, just under half our picks should be "hits." If I had to pick the 4 I think are "hits" I go: Tannehill, Martin, Egnew, Kaddu. My friend had the same first 3, but Miller instead of Kaddu.
No, I would give him more credit if we had more talent. At RB, we have Reggie Bush who is in the last year of his contract and probably too old to fit into Philbin's long-term plans, and Thomas, who was drafted by the previous coach, is a fumbler and missed a lot of games due to injury. That is not a surfeit of talent. At TE, we have Fasano who is just slightly above average and Clay, who is more of an H back. Neither one brings to mind visions of Antonio Gates or Jimmy Graham.
My 63 year old dad and fins fan since they've had a team talked about the same thing... Who knows if Tannehill will be a good QB or not... but poop... we're happy to least look forward to his development for a couple years either way. If the Fins drafting something else #1, we'd be saying meh... still probably won't make the playoffs. Well we still probably won't make the playoffs but at least we have something to look forward to.
