Closest thing to an Alpha Wideout on the market and it just costs cash. This is a no-brainer, IMO. What do you guys say?
He knows the WCO and has been productive w/ less than stellar QB work in D.C. I think he would be a good role player. Sign him up.
Why? Why bring in an old mediocre player, when we have young guys to try and develop? I'd much rather have a rookie or young guy develop into an average player like Gaffney, than bring in Gaffney.
He has talent and fits the system well, but I'm not sure he's the type of character this team is fond of.
As I said in Club, there's about a zero point f**k-all chance that Jeff Ireland will displace one of his younger players in favor of a 31-going-on-32 year old player that has neither great speed/quickness, great size/strength nor great run-after-catch ability. Ireland is all about young players. Whenever it's close between a young player and an old player, he cuts the old guy...and that definition of "close" for him is not the same definition of "close" for most other people. You can say cut Naanee in favor of Gaffney but I currently do not have Naanee even making the final 53 man roster so either way you'd have to displace a young guy in order to keep Gaffney on roster.
What happened to trying to win? If Julius Pruitt keeps you from signing a proven performer like Gaffney, I'm confused.
Role player? Gaffney, given his experience and abilities combined with our lack of anything close to a #1 guy would probably be our most productive WR. Bess and Hartline are reliable and our rookies, well they are rookies and late round selections at that. I'm not totally on the "go get Gaffney" bandwagon, but he'd certainly help and he wouldn't demand a huge contract. Flip side: we have a lot of receivers already now, and we need to see what our guys can do in this new system. There are just too many WRs and not enough footballs.
Honestly Vinny it's about talent level and what you see the max production of a player being in your system. I don't think Gaffney has ever shown anything special that would make the staff think he's that much of an upgrade over one of the younger WR's they've been developing. We don't have the inside view on what they think of their young prospects but I don't think it takes much to match Gaffney's skill set.
Are we talking about Jabar Gaffney? I've never thought of him as a #1 WR. He's always been more of a #3 or #4 everywhere he has gone.
Here is a partial list of veteran WRs available. Jacoby Jones (likely would be cut if the Texans can’t trade him) and free agents Plaxico Burress, Patrick Crayton, Braylon Edwards, Roy Williams, T.J. Houshmanzadeh, Mark Clayton, Greg Camarillo, Bernard Berrian. Granted they would probably cost more money than Gaffney but this team is not going to a SB soon so we may as well find out what we have in our young WRs. I think I would rather have a sure handed receiver like Camarillo than Gaffney . Surehandedness is very important in the WCO.
I MIGHT bring Clayton is for a visit. But unless someone else becomes available. I would go into next season with what we got. Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk 2
i like camerillo but since that knee injury he hasnt done ****. Just goes to show how poor our WRs are if the man couldnt get a spot in minn. I could take or leave gaf. I think this year will expose our weakness at wr and next draft they'll try to go after some real talent instead of bargin shopping in round 7.
There's simply no one out there that is going to clearly upgrade the position at this point. A shoutout of thanks to the head case we had to offload for that! The reality it that the hole at WR is not going to be filled unless one of the young guys really steps up this year.
If we're gunna bring in a vet that's going to take snaps away from the young guys, it better be for a wise vet like Driver who could really offer our young guns something towards their development in terms of a mentor. Gaffney doesn't offer much in that department, and would just hinder the development of our young WRs.
i took think driver has anything left except what he can teach our young guys. hed basically be a WRs coach that stands on the sideline wearing pads, holding his helmet. If he's willing to do that for cheap I have no problem with him being signed. I want hartline to be given the chance to break out of fade away and I want to see what we have with gates. giving someone like a driver tons of playing time is a win now move and driver is not a win now talent anymore.
Driver can't stretch the field, but he can still catch the ball. Had the same number of TD's as Brandon Marshall, and more in 2010. If they could use him in the red zone that would help us. Anything to help us stop kicking so many field goals.
Hate that guy and it is personal. Long story short....quite a few years ago at GA-FL game. I am sitting on the goal line, 4th row. Florida is warming up in front of us. Gaffney and Caldwell are in the endzone catching passes and stretching. I yell out to him, "Hey Jabbar...you going to steal another kids bike after the game". He comes over my way...says a bunch of jibberish. Caldwell holds him back and I laugh. Gaffney then says, "I got something fo yo ***". I laugh again. He then proceeds to catch a TD pass, iirc in the first quarter, right in front of us. He then points at me and says, "Take that *****". Nothing I could say at that point.
This is like that time I asked Matt Jones if he was gonna steal my family's land after the game. Didn't take it too well.
WTF dude? LOL. You were taunting him...... What was with the bike comment? Was he arrested for stealing a bike or something?
whats the bike comment? i dont get it? yeah driver had touchdowns because he was on a team that actually scored points. saying he had as many tds as marshall so we should sign him is pretty stupid.
