I thought when the Dolphins made this pick that Miller may turn out to be the, steal of this draft. He has great speed and having watched him play in person several times last season, I think he will be a great addition to the team. It would not surprise me in the least if he doesn't become the starter in 2013. I don't see the Dolphins resigning Bush after the 2012 season and I think Miller will turn out to be a far better back in the NFL than Daniel Thomas.

It would not surprise me in the least if Miller doesn't end up having the best NFL career of all the players the Dolphins selected in the 2012 draft.

Notice that Bush and Slaton can do the same sort of things so this is definetely what they plan on doing a lot of this yr.

Shoulder injuries on backs worry me, sometimes it changes the way they run, I can't find the actual diagnosis of the injury?, read a couple articles that said it wasn't serious but yet he had offseason surgery?

Lamar Miller is special. If he would have stayed in school he could have potentially been a 1st rounder.

I'm all for inventiveness, but I also do not understand, even in the slightest, the desire to put him at WR. His greatest assets, from what I've seen, are his stop/start ability, his burst, and his vision. These are RB traits. He's not beating jams, running crisp routes, shagging balls at their high point, shielding defenders with his body, leaping, or blocking.

If this is coming about because he can't block, teach him to block. I get that we have a bit of an abundance of riches at RB now, and that he's similar to Bush but nowhere near as good on third down, but that doesn't warrant stunting his growth to try to plug him somewhere else we need help. It's only slightly less ridiculous than the Zach Thomas-to-safety abortion. Plan on Bush getting hurt (it's not that ludicrous of an idea) and use him in a sub role until that happens.

I'd like to hear a more consise vision from the coach than that, not sure to the degree of what he's envisioning.

Disagree. Splitting out at WR and converting to WR are not the same thing. I imagine a lot of split back sets with Miller and Bush where one is motioned into the slot. Can you imagine how that stretches a defense on a short yardage play? It's incredibly difficult to re-route a man in motion/off the ball. His ability to beat the press is not going to matter in the slightest.

If Egnew can become a half decent blocker a set with Egnew/Bush/Miller is almost impossible to stop for a defense. All three are coverage nightmares for a LB. That means extra defensive backs, and what that means is.....if your offensive line can win or even stalemate their matchups you are going to have a lot of huge plays. It's a pick your poison scenario. If you commit extra defensive backs to stop the pass both Bush and Miller are excellent runners. If you keep your LB's in you can motion Miller out and have him on a route while having Bush run a route out of the backfield.

It won't stunt his growth, it will make him an even bigger threat.

I hear you, but I also think this argument could be (and is) made for any elusive RB that isn't a tank. I'd be more likely to do it with an undersized guy who can't take the pounding of a traditional H-back.

I agree with you on the bolded part for sure. However I think the more athletic you are the better the role fits.I don't know if you're a Canes fan or if you've watched Miller play a good amount? Because having watched him this entire last season these are things I think make him extremely dangerous split out wide from the backfield. In certain situations of course not ever down.

    1) Vision: Like you said before it is one of his strengths. Getting the ball to him out wide allows not only a defensive mismatch but the ability to have a clean view of the field. He diagnoses blocks well and that is huge in the open field. Could be the difference between a fifteen yard gain and a fifty yard touchdown.

    2) Balance: When I watch Miller run I see him breaking tackles not by being a tank (which we agree his isn't) but with superior balance. He tends to bounce off of defenders and maintain his feet. Being matched up with a corner this is huge to me. If the play comes down to a corner having to tackle Miller one on one I like our odds of winning that matchup a majority of the time. He has the power to lower a shoulder on a corner and with his balance it is imperative that the corner wrap up and not try and not try and just deliver a big hit. Corners aren't usually known for their great tackling mechanics.

    3) Stop/Start Speed: Matched up with a linebacker I'd expect a lot of routes where he drags, slows/settles in the middle before taking off again. This is one good way to use his stop/start ability like you mentioned.

I just think the more mismatches you have on the field the more creative you can be, and the more creative you can be the more successful you can be on a consistent basis. I think he'd be a dud if you moved him to WR as in...the actual position full time. It's the unpredictability of the offense with Bush/Miller on the field that makes it effective.

Think about it....how many truly gifted coverage LB's does a team usually have? Maybe one? Two if they are a great defense? Sometimes none? It's why LT and Gates complimented eachother so well in the passing game IMO. Obviously both were great players on their own, but LT was a great pass catcher who benefited even more from Gates drawing the oppositions top coverage LB and/or safety. I'm not comparing situations, just saying that creating mismatches against the defense can be a huge benefit.

The thing we learned the last decade(Patriots) is to find mismatches and exploit them when you can.
They see the kid has playmaking ability,so you get him on the field as much as possible.
I see nothing wrong with the team having a vision with current/future players and the roles they will fill.
When's the last time we had coaching like that?
