Rodgers may or may not have gone later because he was a developmental guy, but he was destined to sit behind Brat Faver anyway, so they had the luxury of taking him when he fell to them...big difference in taking him because he might have been a developmental guy. Besides, how long do you think he'd have sat if Favre had retired sooner, as he so often threatened to ?? Don't kid yourselves. Ron Wolf took him because he saw something in Rodgers and if he was right at 24 he'd have been a steal...it's a simple as that.

Rodgers also had one other flaw that Tanny does not. Rodgers was a Tedford product and had to be retaught the QB position at this level. That did take some time. GB did a nice job of assimilating his natural talent to the WCO QB position and were afforded the time to do so with Favre there.

Additionally, Rodgers was drafted under the old rookie wage rules. Taking a QB that high is now going to happen even if the guy has some flaws because missing on the guy simply won't hurt as much on the cap. I doubt he sits at all, but if he does, we can only gain by that and won't be strapped to a huge contract.

As to Tanny, he's going to play sooner because of our need. MMoore is a nice QB, but a) he's never played in the WCO before and is likely not a great candidate for that system anyway and b) he's proven exactly what he is...a fill-in or backup at best. That's not a knock on the good things he does, but if he were to break out, it should have happened by now. He's had two shots at it and has been so-so at best in both tries... Unfortunately for us as Dolfans, we do get excited over a QB taking us 6-6 in his 12 games...even tho he had some flashes of decent play, it simply isn't enough to warrant hanging our hats on. I liken him to the infatuation some fans had with Rex Hadnot. He was a mediocre OL that played better than any of the other guys we had (save for V. Carey) at that period of time, but everyone was all bent out of shape when we traded him (or let him go, I forget and am too lazy to look it up).

As to Tanny's flaws, for once it appears his major flaw is lack of experience at the QB position. It's not his physical tools, it's not his intangibles, it's nothing off field, it's not injury related, it's simply that he has only 19 starts as a QB in college. Many seem to forget two or three important positives this guy has....he is a coach's son. He's been 'coached' for this his entire life. He a student of the game and already knows how to study film, how to practice, etc. Things not all rookies know how to do. He had the advantage of being a WR and QB in the very system he's going to be running here. The learning curve will be short for him.

None of these things can take away his one flaw of simply not enough experience at this level. But taking him where we did was a good move. First because this fan base needs him. Second because his flaws are teachable, not intangible and third because even at #8 and even if he fails, the price was right...

Actually, he is the 4th, behind Norton, Griese and Marino. But I realize that's not really the point! ;)

That's incorrect. We've had 3 1st round QBs prior to Tannehill. Rick Norton, Bob Griese, and Dan Marino. Norton was drafted 2nd overall in 1966.

He does not need an official nickname. You call him whatever you want, and I'll call him whatever I want. I've been calling him Tanny for 2 months, so I'll stick with that, unless I get lazier, then I'll call him RT.

I see Tannehill as being noted for being the future backup to Matt Barkley, the Dolphins first round selection in the 2013 draft.

It's threads like this that make me hate Chris Berman and ESPN even more....not everyone needs some catchy nickname or phrase when they are mentioned while making a good play.

Actually that is pretty funny. It has the potential for headline value during Dolphins-Jets matchups, if Tannehill and Sanchez both happen to be starting by that point. By the time we play, Tebow could be playing for the Jets and/or Garrard/Moore could still be playing for the Dolphins.

It's too bad 'white mamba' has been used so much by now that it's not funny anymore because that could actually fit his playing style.

We should call him Jetssuck. After all JS lost his fight the same day, and a few hours later we selected Tanny.
