Dolphins To Host Ovie Mughelli On Thursday Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that free agent fullback Ovie Mughelli will fly to Miami tonight and visit the Dolphins on Thursday. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/05/16/dolphins-to-host-ovie-mughelli-on-thursday/
With that name, he sounds like he walks around with a spear in one hand and a leash attached to liger (yes, a freaking liger) he himself tamed with the other. True story.
I had been thinking that we lack a good blocking fullback. However, he's not going to come cheap. We'll probably have to make a prominent cut to clear the space.
Messam just had a 2nd surgery on his meniscus, so that's probably the end of his dream, at least for this year. I know Disgustipate talked about Mughelli the day he was cut. I also think this would be a great signing as Miami's probably going to have to rely on the running game more heavily, especially if Tannehill ends up starting at some point this year.
From what I understand about WCO, the fullback position doesn't figure prominently as a running threat, it's more blocking.
Dick Stockton and Bob Griese are drinking heavily thinking about trying to pronounce this guys name in preseason....
They don't have to worry, if they do sign him he'll still be invisible on gameday like he was here in Atlanta.
After the Liger one-liner, I'm preemptively naming him T'Challa. Only my fellow nerds will get that. Avengers Assemble.
If the finances work out, and his knee is better, I hope this move happens. It'd be very cool to me if he played for the Dolphins. I do not know Ovie Mughellie well, but have met him on several occasions. My cousin was his head football coach in high school, and I coached his younger brother on the j.v. squad. Ovie keeps in touch with my cousin to this day, and runs a football camp on campus in June. Great guy, super nice, high character, really smart, and comes from a great family (please no Ted Ginn "family" references y'all). His father is a doctor, and I believe his sister is as well. Had football not panned out for him, Ovie was headed to medical school too, after Wake Forest. A couple stories; Ovie played for a very expensive private school here in Charleston, SC. By the time he was a junior in high school, he was 245 pounds of granite. Most of the players in the independent league did not tip the scales over 200 pounds, and there were times in high school where he would drag 4 or 5 defenders with him across the goal line. Needless to say, he racked up some impressive stats, and some of his games looked like video games, against that competition. They handed him the ball and collected a state title. My wife is a pediatrician in private practice, who employs another doctor who graduated with Ovie in high school, and played football with him. This guy is maybe 150 pounds soaking wet, and played O-line for Ovie in high school. Let that sink in. Anyway, they both ended up at Wake Forest. They would go to parties in college and pretend not to know each other. Then my wife's employee would pretend to pick a fight with Ovie, who would proceed to throw him around like a rag doll, and military press him over his head and carry him around. They would keep it up, making people think Ovie was going to kill him, til they couldn't keep a straight face any longer and would break out laughing. Then they would tell everybody that the scrawny guy he was tossing around was one of his offensive linemen in high school. On a side note, I also coached Roddy White of the Falcons at another area high school, but I don't have any warm and fuzzy stories about that jackass...
