I am not sure if it is good or bad, but I have an uneasy feeling about Ross making any comments about who the qb will be in September. I realize he is attempting to deflect any pressure attributed to him about pushing Tannehill to start, but I would have preferred a comment about the competition being open. Gerrard might be more of a threat to Moore than Tannehill. I don't know, but it kind of rubbed me wrong. A new coach can make up his own mind.

I think people are reading into what he said too much. He did create a situation where people can take his words and run off with them.

More than anything I took it from him that he's willing to be patient on Ryan Tannehill and he wants the fans to do the same. Joe Philbin strikes me as the kind of guy that would have Tannehill sit, maybe even multiple years as Aaron Rodgers once did.

It is interesting that Ross seems to have no regard for David Garrard. I think that was a Philbin pick. I know he likes Garrard a lot.

Dolphins did want to bring in Garrad last season after Henne was hurt.

This has already been the breaking news today on NFL Network. I don't want to mis-interpret what he says. But sometimes silence is a good thing.

I believe a lot of dolphin fans understand the patient approach. I just wish that is what he had said plain and simple. Avoid putting a name to a starting qb at this point in the season.

NFL Network just went all TLC on this.

I do not think silence is a good thing. He answered a question. This is the new Dolphins where people answer questions instead of no comment. He didn't say, "Moore will be the starter." He said, "He thinks," which means he doesn't know, "he probably", which means he isn't sure.

Lets be honest here, only reason Rodgers sat was because Brett Favre was there. We dont have the luxury of having an all pro, super bowl winning, franchise QB playing ahead of Tannehill. I think if Philbin is smart, which I think he is, he isnt going to be promising the job to anyone. He is going to go forward with a real QB competition and whomever wins that will be the guy.

Secondly is anyone else tired of hearing Ross speak....The owner should be seen and not heard. Make adjustments to the stadium, the complex, the ticket prices, the entertainment, the ownership, but shut the hell up when it comes to starting personel....There is a reason you're the owner and not the coach.

I said in another thread that I see Ross as basically a fan who gets excited and talks too much. But he really doesn't have much more information on most football subjects than a typical fan would. I'm guessing that Ireland talked up Moore last year and then Ross saw the team go 6-3 to end the season. That makes him like Moore. He's also probably heard Tannehill talked up by Ireland and Philbin and is excited about him too. But Garrard is just the other QB. Ross doesn't have any info about who is likely to start. He's just speculating like any other fan would. Unfortunately, he has to realize that most won't see him that way.

It has gone beyond NFL Network to other media sources, including the mother ship as Dan Patrick calls espn. I like communication from the front office. But sometimes....

I like hearing what the owner has to say personally. He can give his opinion on whatever he wants to as far as I'm concerned.

I wouldn't worry too much about what Ross is saying in May. Now if he's talking about Moore in Sept, then there might be something to it...They haven't had the team together but for a few days...I mean, it's very unlikely they've installed more than half the offense...determining who the starter is now is crazy. Besides, MMoore did enough last year to warrant being the designated starter this early in the offseason...

I agree, I don't understand why people think t owner should Stay quiet
    1) they own the team, their right to do or say what they want
    2) they are the ones least likely to give the standard "no comment" or cliche answers. They provide the best quotes outside of the Diva WRs

If I paid $1 BILLION for a franchise, I would feel the right to say any damn thing I feel like saying. IMO this is much ado over nothing. Personally we're not going to the SB this season anyway, so I would just as soon 1. sit Tannehill a year to get acclimated and used to the speed of the NFL, and 2. See what Matt Moore has got with some improvements placed around him and a full set of OTA's and TC behind him. We could find out we've got a really solid QB on our hands that could make for a couple 1st rounders or whatever when we're ready to more on. Heck, Moore might just possibly give Sherman/Philbin reason to sit Tannehill more than a year. Think Rich Gannon.

Then again Moore could suck and we'd have a nice high pick to put some better players drafted to support Tannehill with.

Except neither of the QB's was on the roster (IE he didnt win it OVER them, you can't say how they would have performed) last year. There is going to be a competition. Maybe Moore wins, maybe he doesn't, but last year has nothing to do with it really.

First, yes I'm aware Rodgers sat because of the presence of Brett Favre. However, that was still the experience Joe Philbin had up there, taking a guy in the first round and having him sit for three years, then setting him loose and watching him go off like gangbusters. That's been his experience and that's important, because people see their own current circumstances in the light of their experience. It didn't have to be Joe Philbin's idea to sit Rodgers for three years regardless of Favre's presence, in order to have affected him. It's likely to affect him no matter what.

Second, none of that precludes a three-way QB competition which has been their stated goal since before they drafted Tannehill. Even before they took Tannehill Jeff Ireland let slip that Garrard, Moore and "whoever we draft" will compete for the job. Later I think Joe Philbin tried to cover for him and said Garrard, Moore and Devlin.

Third, everyone's got their own preferences I suppose...but I know that if I shelled out a billion dollars for a football team and I was the alpha and omega of that team, I'd do and say whatever the hell I wanted too. I think it's Steve Ross' influence that is loosening up Jeff Ireland and actively improving his image.

I just think there are things he could say, and things he shoiuldnt say at all. He's obviously a fan and probably more educated on the daily goings on of the franchise than us, but I would rather hear things about the teams intentions from say our coach or the GM. JMO

I view Ross as a fan who owns the team... he's always come across that way to me and not the greedy businessman that is all about selling tickets that the media makes him out to be.As raf mentioned, he just gets excited about different things and makes statements that the media like to blow out of proportion.

I'm all for transparency within the organization personally... it makes fans feel more connected to the team that way.

I think you're suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. You've been at the mercy of these media-nazi coaching staffs (Nick Saban, Bill Parcells, Jeff Ireland/Tony Sparano even once Parcells was gone) that you've become intolerant to the kind of attitude and media/fan interaction that most other fans get a lot of enjoyment out of.

What Ross should have said is this: "I know no more about running the football end of the operation than the average fan - I will leave the football issues to the football people. I'm not a coach or a GM. I'm not on the field or in the film sessions with these guys. It's going to be the coach and GM who make the decision who will start at QB. We have a great offensive system being installed. We have two very capable veterans at QB with upside and a young rookie with great potential. Should be some great competition. I'm glad we're in that situation. It looks a lot better than at any time in the past several years."

At least guys like Jerry Jones and Al Davis had actual football backgrounds, to one degree or another (though Davis was much more experienced and, before he became senile and the game passed him by, was quite superior as a GM to Jerry). We don't need a Daniel Snyder (who has made mistake after mistake trying to be too involved in day-to-day operations and who he wanted on the team). Sure, Ross is the owner but he really is talking out of his butt when he talks football. It's like asking the U.S. President about strategy for how a particular marine unit should attack an enemy stronghold and which Lt. should lead the attack.

Given Ross' background, the best strategy he can take is to decide who he wants leading the team (GM & Coach-wise) for the long term and let it happen (privately voice his thoughts to those guys - with humility about his own understanding). Then focus on reconstructing the stadium to make it SB worth and a place that actually rocks for football.

Steven Ross just stated what most everyone who follows the Dolphins already knows. The NFL has become a crazy circus act where every word said, and every move made gets put under a microscope and dissected. The owner stated his thoughts on the QB position, and the NFL Network has a BREAKING NEWS scroll.

    It's ridiculas.

Years of that kind of control on information does shape one's perspective. He owns the team and he can say what he wants. Utlimately, what is communicated in practice and on the field in games is what counts.

Maybe, but i'm also jaded from having worked in the professional sports world and knowing how the players/staff/trainers/management feel about the owners talking. Dont get me wrong, i like Ross, i see him as a smart, savy business man. Im glad he's a fan, im glad he's hands on, i just would like less commentary on player personnel from him.

I personally like the commentary. I just hate this attitude that they're afraid to say anything on the fear that it might somehow give them a competitive disadvantage. What BAD really comes of Steve Ross' statement? Nothing bad comes of it. He's speaking as almost like from the perspective of a fan, and I think we all know that. Even people that criticize his statement, know that. So what's the big deal, really? It lights a fire under Garrard and gives him even more motivation. It gives Ryan Tannehill even more motivation to prove him wrong (he did tell Mike Sherman straight to his face, two times, that he's making a huge mistake passing him over for the starting job...he's very competitive). And when you consider the previous statements made by not just Steve Ross but also Jeff Ireland, the vote of confidence is welcome for a guy like Matt Moore, whose confidence has to be reeling right now.

I just really hate this "say nothing" attitude. It's not good for the sport. It's bad for the sport.

Incidentally, according to all the media, David Garrard is already looking the best of the QBs:

    http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sport...arterback-competition-into-the-spotlight.html

Not surprising. I expect that to continue. I've said many times, going all the way back to the day he was officially signed, that I expect him to earn the starting job. Matt Moore is not a good practice player. He's better in the games than he is in practice, I believe. Ryan Tannehill knows the offense. That's true enough. But David Garrard knows the offense AND the defense.

While it's nice from a pure development standpoint that Ryan Tannehill is in a comfortable playbook to where he can begin immediately acclimating to the increased speed of the game, and learning how NFL defenses like to attack him, knowing the playbook is not something that is going to see him starting from day one. It's not THAT big of an advantage. For veterans like Moore and Garrard, learning the playbook is just a matter of time, and not even that much time.

Garrard already essentially knows the playbook. There isn't a single play in there he hasn't seen before. It was just called something else, when he learned it. He was taught the WCO by Bill Musgrave for a couple of years when he joined the league, I think his first two or three years. The other offenses he had with Dirk Koetter and others, there were a lot of WCO elements in there, just as with many offenses around the NFL. He talked about how early in his career he thought learning a new playbook was very daunting, but now he feels like he's got it right away because he's seen all of this before and just has to learn the names of the plays and how to call them. The biggest transition for him will be the hand signaling because he might not be used to that. But it's not going to be that big a deal for a heady veteran like him, any more than it was for Chad Pennington.

I've seen Miami's QB situation compared with the Titans' QB situation in 2011 and I like that comparison. The problem is, people think Matt Moore is the Matt Hasselbeck. I don't think so. I think David Garrard is. He will get a firmer grasp on the playbook faster than Matt Moore. He will look better in practice. He's already a favorite of Joe Philbin's and that is one of the reasons he's here. He's more of a guy you can count on to take Ryan Tannehill under his wing than Matt Moore, who is trying to make his name and does not appreciate the competition. I think Garrard has a better veteran presence and the players will gravitate toward him more. His game is more compatible with Mike Sherman's, as well. I don't think Joe Philbin is in love with Matt Moore and I think his praise of him in the past has almost come across as like a backhanded compliment.

The problem is the media's over reaction and the ensuing distraction it becomes. I've always thought the various media lockdowns weren't so much about another team getting a competitive advantage but about the media creating an issue were there wasn't one.

I have to believe that Ross is hoping that Moore is not the starting QB during the 2012 season. Because if he is, this means Garrard was not an upgrade and Tannehill isn't ready or good enough to unseat Moore. This will also mean that the Dolphins will most likely finish 5-11 or 6-10 and in last place in the AFC East. Moore is a decent backup QB in the NFL, but if an NFL team is relying on him to play an entire season and them end up with a winning record, I just don't see it.

I am on record as stating that Moore will not only, not be the teams starter in 2012. I don't believe he will even be on the final roster when the preseason is over.
