According to Gammons, as said last night on NESN, the Sox didn't even make him an offer because they knew he didn't want to pitch there. Apparently Texas was always his first choice, followed by St. Louis and Philly.

I can't really blame him for not wanting to go to Baltimore though, they're not real contenders. Nor can I blame him for wanting to pitch closer to his home and for a good team.

The Marlins had 4 no hitters in 19 years, it took the Mets 50 years to get one.

    Never.

Officially, they have a no hitter. In my mind, however, they do NOT have a no hitter.

The point is....this shouldnt have to be accepted any longer ( in both instances ) ....we are at the point where calling per the rules correctly "improves the game" vs. the age old acceptable HUMAN element of ERROR. From number of cameras, to HD sets in homes, to multiple angles, to replays quickly queued up, to 24hr channels devoted to baseball, to QuesTech and PitchFX and instant affirmation of the correct zone. Its time.

Call the game per the rules and let TECHNOLOGY improve the game per the rules written.

P.S. I am not taking anything away from Johan or Mets...they are in the books. I know "others" on the list in the books have dubious reasons too.

But if press/announcers wants to trumpet this as the "*" label no-no fine by me, same with the Perfecto last year. I do love it when announcers or pundits audibly correct the number of PERFECT games whenever discussed by adding A. Galarraga's from last year - it makes me chuckle - I love it - a verbal stick in the ribs to brains of baseball that are dragging their feet on the need for replay.

This is another item on the ledger for Instant Replay, which is what I want, and we who love the beauty of game should want. Get it right, not close...right!

Call it per the rules...not to the best of HUMAN in-ability!

Jorge Soler has been declared a free agent and is now eligible to sign with any team, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). The 20-year-old Cuban outfielder will be subject to the spending restrictions imposed by the new collective bargaining agreement as of July 2nd, but he can sign for any amount prior to then.

The Indians, Red Sox, Phillies, Yankees, Marlins, Blue Jays, and Astros are said to have interest in Soler, and back in March there were bogus reports that the Cubs had agreed to a contract with the outfielder.

Two GMs speculated that the bidding would exceed five years and $15-20MM back in February.

Very decent MLB Draft Primer here: http://www.maxpreps.com/news/yuoqx1...---stories-on-all-the-potential-top-picks.htm

Tonight thru Wednesday 40 rounds for any club interested.....

Allotted spending caps based on the number and placement of team's picks, and an earlier signing deadline are among the changes clubs will navigate this year. The draft also is shorter now, pared from 50 to 40 rounds.

Under baseball's new collective bargaining agreement, teams will have a pool of bonus money from which to sign players. The Astros, for example, have about $11.2 million to use as bonuses on their 11 picks through the 10th round. The Twins, who have 13 picks in 10 rounds, have about $12.4 million to use for bonuses.Teams face a punitive tax and the possibility of losing draft picks if they stray from the prescribed bonuses.

If a player doesn't sign, the team loses the amount for that slot. And if a player signs for less than the slot, the team could shift that money to other picks. For players selected in the 11th round and beyond, portions of signing bonuses above $100,000 would count against the bonus pool.

Team by Team bonus pool info here: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120603&content_id=32695974&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb

Every pick of the opening round and Compensation Round A of Major League Baseball's 2012 First-Year Player Draft will be aired by MLB Network and streamed live on MLB.com on Monday night at 7 p.m. ET, immediately following a one-hour preview show that begins at 6 p.m. ET. Rounds 2-40 will also be streamed live on MLB.com on Tuesday and Wednesday.

    Meaning negotiations are currently underway.

The Cubs, Yankees, Dodgers and Braves have been tied most frequently (and most recently) to the promising 20-year-old outfielder. While the Orioles, Phillies and White Sox have also been linked. Soler is expected to get at least $25 million guaranteed.

Baseball America described Soler recently as “one of Cuba’s up-and-coming young power hitters as a star on Cuba’s national junior circuit and on the junior national team.” He is a raw but intriguing talent.

Theo hasn't produced/signed a quality international free agent that has turned into a good MLB player, of course the jury is still out but thus far Theo's track record is bad with them. Unless you want to count Matsuzaka and Okajima (but one can argue they were already established players).

Theo's biggest weaknesses have been signing FA, whether they have been established MLB players or international FAs. Of course not all blame falls on Theo for the international FAs, he's depending on scouting reports etc.

Of course the good scouts working for him aren't the same ones he had in Boston. I believe he was only allowed to take 2 or 3 FO guys with him, I don't think he was able to take any scouts and if he was it was probably only 1 or 2 of them. Most of the scouts he has are from the Cubs.

Apparently he's not over yet, for some crazy reason Baltimore signed him to a minor league deal. Can you imagine Moyer pitching in the AL East? It won't end well but at least it will be quick.

Another reason why having draft slotting is a stupid idea. Soler has 30 million on the open market but this year's #1 draft pick will get 4 or 5 million tops. Imagine if Bryce Harper or Straburg were international FAs?

But, it's a grand-father thing however, not the same going forward with the new rules is the way I have read it...

P.S. and they would be questioning Harper's and Strasburg's age, development, and PEDs to get him to this point:lol:...etc...meaning, it would be the same regardless. The CBA cleans this up for INTL stars (except for Japanese Pro League player with their bids/rights fee/ and contract process, etc).

True about the grandfather clause (which is probably a big reason as to why he got that much money) but it's still not fair to either the kids living in the US, Puerto Rico, Canada or the ones living anywhere else. There shouldn't be a limit or cap on this stuff. If a team is willing to pay X amount for Player A they should be able to.

Obviously this year's draft its a SSS but the best players didn't go to the lesser teams like the MLB thought they would. You're still not getting talent being picked in the order they are essentially ranked by whoever is doing the rankings whether it be BA, BP, ESPN, SI, MLB or whoever. Kids are still falling in the draft due to signability and now teams are picking "safe" picks so they don't have to forfit any draft money. Again it's a SSS since it's only been 1 year but so far MLB's grand idea to give back to the poor isn't working.

And let's be honest this has nothing to do with "the have and the have nots", it's about the owners not wanting to spend money on the kids, thus putting a spending limit on them so they don't have to open their check books as much as they used too.

We debated this when the CBA was announced...not losing any sleep over "subjective rankings", and not losing any sleep over unproven amateurs taking up the $$ (potentially) that vets have rightly earned, or that clubs are tired of wasting on a wanna-be, or decide to put to other use to improve the club.

Of course there should be a limit and a cap on these sort of things. From a luxury tax, to a hard cap or hard floor, these things are necessary for the game.

Regardless of first year player draft, all players once MLB proven get paid quite well. That's ok in my book. And American or Intl prospects...again, not a concern. Owners and Players Union agreed to the deal.

Frankly, if you want to get behind the "change these stupid rights fee bidding rules for Japanese Leagues players" then I will support that and be right with you. This CBA failed to correct that silly process.

At the end of the day, MLB is not forcing the hand of any club once on the clock, on how best to spend its money or assemble its team. It doesnt stick its nose in on FA signings, trades, or draft picks alike. Actually, more often than not, its the Players Union that does.

Its a business...and its damn entertaining. And as far as future stars, the line to sign up and play will not wane...someone will always have that dream and be willing to follow the rules of the owners and CBA (foreign or domestic).

The next CBA can improve on things...but the game isnt harmed by the CBA this go round.

The MLB basically has a monopoly on these kids' salaries though, it's not fair. Why should they be limited in what they make? Why do they have to prove anything first? This is America, if a team thinks you're worth 20 million why shouldn't they be able to give you that? Again it's because of the owners, they want to keep that money in their pockets.

I'd rather risk that money with someone unproven than to waste it on "proven" MLB guys. I'd rather give a 18 year old kid with potential 4 million dollars to sign with me, than to give that money or more to Nick Punto or Jason Marquis or Jaime Moyer.

But of course that's my opinion. I just don't think it's right to put limits or a cap on the teams spending if they don't even have a cap for the MLB club. And the MLB's excuse to have this new system is they want to give back to the "have nots" but it's all about the owners and their check books.

And yes the MLB is forcing the hand of teams on the clock, one of the main reasons why the Astros went with Correia instead of Appel (who fell to what #8 or 9) was because they knew Corriea would sign under the slot of a 1st pick thus them having more money to spend in later rounds. Isn't the whole purpose of the draft to get the best available player? Not saying Correia was a bad choice, the kid is by all accounts worthy of a top 5 pick but you have to wonder if there wasn't this new system if things would have gone differently. The number of college seniors that were drafted this year in earlier rounds was up big time, which again shows that teams were more worried about being able to sign players under the slot so they could save money to use in later rounds for harder to sign picks. Again this doesn't help the lesser teams, just smarter FOs.

As far as the Japanese posting system, I don't really have a problem with it. The Japanese team has the player under contract, if they want to make him available why not? Yeah it stinks that the player is limited to whatever team wins the bid but that player (who is still under a contract he signed) can always opt to wait until his contract is up so he's able to talk to all 30 teams.

And with the new CBA the MLB is risking 2 sport players going away from baseball since they won't get those high bonuses they're used to getting in the past and instead going to college to play football/basketball. Guys like Carl Crawford who could have played football and/or basketball in college said the main reason why he went with baseball was because the Rays gave him a big bonus to sign, a bonus he wouldn't have gotten this year.
