This is not a good thing to hear! Esp. after using a 2nd round pick on a player there - where you expect to be able to plug him in.

It's also interesting that Chad Johnson is getting great reports. I am glad for that, on the one hand. But, on the other hand, what might that say about the quality of players at WR already on the team, given Johnson's dwindling productivity the past couple of seasons and his age?

In the context that he said it, it didn't sound quite as damning as it looks in print. Seemed like he was just saying there isn't some key combination of players that would hit all the tumblers in a lock and suddenly it's xanadu. They're just trying guys out, feeling out different combinations, getting them all work, etc.

A very informative transcript from Coach..good stuff in there.

*(On Reggie Bush’s skill set in the new offense) – “Well obviously time will tell how good of a fit it is, but we like the skills that he has, we like his running ability. He has good vision, good explosiveness, quickness, and I think he has some elusiveness as well. So obviously we like the way he runs the football, and he also has great hands, and he’s good in space. If you’re good in space, you can break and tackle and maybe turn an easy six yard catch into a longer run, which is one of the better plays in football. You know it’s tough to design 20 yard completion passes all the time in the air, so if we can get him the ball in space a little bit, and if we can hand him the ball and get some defenses to spread out so we can get him the football in different ways, I think that will help us.”

*(On whether Reggie Bush will get enough carries in this offense to allow him a chance to lead the league in rushing) – “We haven’t given any thought to that obviously. We’re not at the game plan stage yet, but that wouldn’t be the thing we will be up on Monday nights worried about, an individual player leading the league in rushing attempts. We’d be concerned about getting first downs, getting into field position and scoring points.”

(On his vision for the tight ends in this offense) – “Well, part of coaching is using the people that you have, and featuring what they do best. One of things that our guys have to have is versatility. You’d love a guy to be able to put his hand down on the ground and block a defensive end in the run game, and at the same point in time, be effective in the passing game as a threat down the middle of the field, as a guy that can win matchups against safeties and linebackers in match coverage underneath. You’d love to see a guy be able to do all those three things. A guys has to pass block as well, that’s another thing you’d love to see. Now, are those very many of those animals in the National Football League that do all four of those things really well? There are not a whole lot of those guys, but that’s part of coaching is putting guys in a position to be successful and featuring what they can do well, as opposed to our tight ends in Miami doing those four things come hell or high water. If they can’t block a defensive end, and we’re asking them to block a great pass rusher, I don’t care what the down is, that bad coaching by us. We could complain that the player isn’t a good pass blocker, but we shouldn’t jam it down his throat if that’s not what he does.”

*(On Anthony Fasano’s role in the offense) – “When I interviewed for the job, and I’m not going to sit here and tell you that I watched 1000 plays of the Miami Dolphins, because I didn’t, but I watched some football and I liked what I saw out of Anthony (Fasano). I thought he caught the ball well and found a way to get open. I don’t know what his forty time is, but he found a way to find seams in the coverage and he has some instincts as a route runner. I think he has very good hands, we like the way he catches the football and finds a way to get open. I think that he’s a guy that can block on the line of scrimmage, but again we may decide that one week we like the matchup where we feel like he can knock the heck out of their sub defensive end, we might run a bunch of plays with him on the line of scrimmage in a three point stance. If they keep a guy in on second down, and we don’t like the matchup, we might do some other things with him. So I think he’s going to be a good player, and I’m looking forward to watching his development.”

(On Charles Clay’s ability) – “Some of the same things (as Fasano). He doesn’t have as much experience with his hand in the ground on the line of scrimmage, but he can line up in the backfield and give you some versatility. He can give you some two-back attack when really you are in two tight ends and one back, so that’s a nice thing. I think we can play him in space as well by lining him up outside so you can get a true one-back look. Hopefully, we can use him in two tight end sets where we will have two tight ends have their hands on the ground. There’s some versatility there and I like his skills. He’s a young player, a developing player and I like the way he came back and made a catch on the last drive, I think he dropped a couple of passes in the two minute drill but he came back and made a nice play down at the end of practice.”

(On inspiration from the Miami Heat) – “I think it’s fantastic. I mean it’s a big enough city for everybody to do well and be successful. I actually stayed up last night till there was about 30 seconds left (in the Heat’s game 4 win), which is a late night for me. I’m delighted for them, and I wish them all the best and I don’t want to put any undue pressure on them, so I’ll just leave it at that.”

(On the state of the right side of the offensive line) – “We’re kind of fiddling around, which I guess is the best way to put it. We’ve rolled some guys in there and I don’t think we’re done with that process because we still need to get a look at some different people. We want to see how they respond in game-like situations and who can be the most effective, consistent player for us and execute the best. I don’t know if we have a great answer (at this point), but that’s okay. We’ve looked at some different combinations, and I don’t know that we’re done looking yet.”

(On Jonathan Martin’s progress at right tackle) – “I think it’s an adjustment, there’s no doubt about it. I’m going to sit here and say that on the one hand, football is football and it’s not a complicated game. Blocking is blocking and pass blocking is pass blocking. The fundamentals don’t change whether you are on the right side or the left side, and I believe in that 100%. I think a difference today in the NFL from when I came into the league nine years ago is that nine years ago almost every good pass rusher was over on the quarterback’s blind side, and I don’t think that’s the case today. I think it is more matchup driven, where if defensive coordinators think your right tackle is weaker than your left tackle, they will put their best guy over there. My point is that the fundamentals of pass protection, the set, the punch, the mirror, is all the same whether you’re playing left or right (tackle). I also think we have to take into consideration Jonathan Martin, and I’m throwing out a figure here I don’t know any specific numbers, has 3400 snaps at left tackle in college, but he only has 197 at right tackle with the Miami Dolphins. So there is an adjustment period that he is going through. Does he look as smooth at right tackle as he does at left tackle? No. Do I believe he can make the transition effectively? Yes.”

(On getting Martin extra reps at right tackle) – “He’s getting a bunch. Obviously he missed some so we’re trying to catch him up a little bit, but he’ll catch up. I don’t know that it’s a whole lot more, yesterday I thought we had 143 competitive snaps out on the field, now that wasn’t all eleven on eleven, and I don’t know how many we had today, but that’s a lot of work. He’s getting his fair share.”

(On Martin facing Cameron Wake in practice) – “That’s great stuff. You know, Coach Turner can sit in a meeting room and talk about how you pass set and I can tell you to time up your punch and that it’s a six inch punch and act real smart, but until you get out there and do it, it’s a different animal going up against that type of athlete. It’s great experience for him.”*

To be honest I do not take much in consideration when it comes to playing without pads. One reason I think Omar sucks as a reporter. He keeps on reporting as if people have pads on. What is important right now is, if people are getting the playbook down, fundamentals looks good and are players in or getting in shape.

The game is 100% once pads come on. So many receivers who have been good without pads disappear when pads come one, same with cornerbacks and even some linebackers. It is even more evident when it comes to linemen.

Some Mini Camp updates from this morning.

Ryan Tannehill is starting with the 1's today, getting his turn in the rotation. A little surprising to me because according to Barry Jackson's sources (and seemingly confirmed by Garrard), he's not getting as many reps with the 1's as Moore and Garrard. Tannehill is playing a segment where the defense is trying to put away the game. He held the ball too long and took a sack, and threw another one that was knocked down by Reshad Jones who might have intercepted it if the drill didn't specifically ask DBs to knock the ball down instead of intercepting.

David Garrard threw a nice 30 yard strike to Julius Pruitt in the end zone on a roll out. Omar speculates Artis Hicks might be paired up with Jon Martin at the moment because Artis is such a good teacher, he's played both positions and is a veteran. Personally I don't buy it. They're just trying different combinations in the normal course of trying to see who is going to be starting at RG and RT.

It's mildly interesting to me that there seemingly has never even been a question that Incognito would start at LG. I guess like him.

Gary Guyton got a sack on David Garrard (Omar). Ryan Tannehill didn't get near as many reps with the 1's as Garrard and Moore got on Days 1 & 2 (Izzy Gould). Dolphins running a fumble recovery drill (Gould). Roberto Wallace working for now ahead of Chad Johnson (Omar). Jonas Gray still rehabbing (Omar). Nolan Carroll also rehabbing today (Omar).

I don't like the rehabbing aspect for Gray. He might get cut before he gets a chance to show he's worth a shot.

The guy blew out his ACL in mid-November on a pretty gruesome hit (if you watch it in slow-motion). I don't know why anyone would expect him to be back before training camp. The Dolphins probably understood that when they signed him.

I would be surprised if he didn't, especially considering the segments where he's getting caught with the ball still in his hands are high pressure segments.

There is so much we don't know about how he's being coached, and it's so early in the process, and the observations we have come from people who don't necessarily know what they're seeing and have to try and see whatever it is they don't know if they're seeing or not in such a short time frame because of the light speed practices which have forced Omar and Izzy to literally agree that one guy would watch this half of the field and the other guy that half of the field...I mean, what's the use in getting worked up about something you can't be sure of?

Much was made in 2008 of the buzzer they had installed for getting the ball out of your hands. What a great idea! Except you come to find out that no other team in the league uses one. That's when you've got to sit back and say hmmm, is there something I'm not aware of going on here? Because this buzzer contraption is not exactly a NEW invention, state of the art, fresh from an inventor's basement. If other teams saw value in that practice, wouldn't they also be using it? What if the common thought is that coaches prefer the quarterbacks to take their time as they're learning things and getting used to the speed of the game? What if the coaches don't want the guys learn to read the field by rushing through their reads, skipping over steps, and being beholden to some buzzer contraption? They don't stop the play in practice just because a pass rusher got there. The QB damn well knows he's sacked and I'm sure he feels something negative about that, but he keeps on making his read and his throw...and what if that's a good thing? What if he's gaining more by holding onto the ball in that practice rep and continuing hard to try and see the field accurately, than he would be if he were trying to rush the ball out so that he won't get sacked?

All that really matters is how these guys are going to perform in the games, and that's not something we're going to be able to tell right now in OTAs, training camp, or even preseason. Heck, Cam Newton had a 65 passer rating in the preseason. Completed only 42% of his passes, a little over 5 yards per attempt, accounted for only 2 TDs. Then in the regular season he's 60% completion, nearly 8 yards per attempt, with 35 TDs.

Thing with Jonas Gray is iirc if you are going to pup a player, then they cannot have practiced with the team.

As for Tannehill, welcome to the big leagues rook.

No decision on placing a player on PUP needs to be made before the first day of Training Camp. They cannot have practiced at all in any Training Camp sessions to be placed on PUP.

Just to summarize some tweets from a poster named datruth who did all the work.

Julius Pruitt was the star of the day according to Omar with three tds..

Philbin thinks Tannehill is improving, Tannehill agrees, but there are some speed issues still keeping him back a bit.

Rjones and Clemons seem to be entrenched as the starters..

Jimmy made a play that was described as great instincts.

Jon Martin didn't look that good, but Philbins thinks he will be ok.

Seems like we're getting good pressure on the Qb.

Olivier has a man body and superman strength,at 21 years old....that's me tweeting your asses..lol

Vontae has some leg issue kept him out..

Roberto Wallace was gettin first team reps.

I didn't mean it as a bad thing. Just that it appears that every day he is taking "sacks" because he's holding on too long. Sometimes it's back to back plays. I imagine it's an issue that will be fixed in time, and I hope he does so. That is all.

I guess that means he's 'gonna go train with his old coach who made him what he thinks he was..kinda like some rocky 3 sh&$... Nasty field, pullin old weights, sledgehammer ****...He's got to build his strength in his legs and upper body, he's got to be able to handle Revis off the line..

This story is what I love about the professional athlete..you can turn it around if you go into some ninja sh&$, even at 34 years old...look yourself in the mirror, realize the damage you have done to your career, and then do something about it mother grabber.

Honestly, since this is practice for everybody and not just the QB I think it's okay. The receivers still need to work on route running and the secondary/LB's still need to work on coverage. He's mainly working on reading the defense making his progressions and passing the ball. There's no advantage in him getting rid of the ball in practice especially considering he isn't slated to start. If you think about the 11-on-11 as just joint position practices, it makes sense.

Eh, the team's conditioning under Sparano was questionable at best.

Idk how much the lockout accounted for it last year, but they came in to the season in pathetic shape.

The team's conditioning under Sparano was certainly questionable in 2011 but prior to that I think any problems with conditioning were due to an issue raised a long time ago about Parcells-influenced strength and conditioning programs which focused a lot on squats and heavy core exercises and not as much on stamina, stuff like that. At least that's what I recall.

Anyway Garrard had a good interview coming off the practice field. He's easily the best, most informative interviewer on the roster. He really emphasized how much freedom the quarterbacks have to change everything at the line individually, changing a receiver's route, making different calls, etc.

Honestly that's the thing that will sink Ryan Tannehill as a rookie and ensure he does not win this competition. He knows the offense but that doesn't matter because the nature of the offense is reacting to the defense. It's like asking a poet who has never used a computer keyboard before to type a poem, while another non-poet who is well versed in typing on keyboards also types a poem. Which poem do you suspect will be better?

I kind of look forward to seeing the offense in action, hopefully with David Garrard running it.

Absolutely agree, Ryan T knows the offense better than any other player BUT he still is failing to read the deffense, and probably that's why he is getting thos sacks. Once he reads the deffense well we'll see good improvement from him and i will be waiting for that. In the meanwhile Garrard and Moore have that advantage.

Funny thing is, waay back when Sparano was hired and Parcells brought in Cowboys fans warned us that Parcells power lifting based approach would produce results but it also led to players burning out/falling apart physically as their joints failed them.

That is how it worked out for our OL in 2011, the Defense was just out of shape, really no excuse for it.

When you have a # 2 overall pick who is in their prime, sitting on the bench, during a game, complaining that he "Doesn't understand what's wrong with him", and that he has to "stop eating junk food all the time", and that he doesn't "feel good about himself", and that he "doesn't have any energy to play in the game" and be his best, tells me, somebody doesn't know wtf their doing in terms of properly implemented a strength and nutritional program for million dollar investments, and obviously that's a major problem when your hi investment, who was in his prime, is off your team, and never reaching the potential you envisioned, and all that is directly related IMO, and there is good evidence to support it.

Having players do dead lifts and squats is not what I'm talking about..It's much more complex and important than that..

No news...but honestly I never expected much.

I think I had the wrong idea of who Anderson Russell was. For some reason I got it my head that he was Colt Anderson from Montana, whom I never really liked athletically and so I overlooked the reports of Anderson Russell's interceptions thus far in OTAs and Mini Camp.

Anderson Russell is the Ohio State safety. He's 6'0" and 202 lbs, ran a 4.47 at his pro day, 18 bench reps, 37 inch vertical, 10'9" broad jump, 4.16 shuttle, 6.76 cone. Had 6 interceptions his last two years at Ohio State. Son of an NFL player. Not really sure why I never took a look at him in the 2010 NFL Draft but I do remember that Kurt Coleman was very much my guy.

I think Anderson Russell had two picks this Mini Camp.

    Speak of the devil.

Honestly I was expecting bad news. I was surprised by the nothing.

Thanks for the info on Anderson Russell. I was wondering what his field short stats were. He was an undrafted free agent 2010, might be why you didn't play much attention to him. Good size, decent speed. So far without pads he is looking good.
