http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/thedailydolphin/2012/07/03/joe-philbin-comes-to-his-own-defense-following-blog-accusation/ I must've missed the previous blog on this. I am being continually impressed with Philbin. He may not do everything right but I love this coach.
The thing is Philbin shouldn't have had to defend himself. He didn't lie by saying it was a personal matter. It most certainly was. Briggane totally put a spin on it. To call him a liar and dishonest is way to much. This isn't Saban we are talking about.
heh I like how the commenters are letting him have it for calling him a liar-- though give us 2 more seasons of mediocrity and i'm sure people will go along with whatever accusations this guy chooses to write
Isn't Philbin restricted from explaining someone else's medical issues? He did the right thing, for the right reason. If Hartline wanted to tell everyone.......
Exactly. It's illegal. Joe Philbin doesn't seem like a guy that would share that information anyway unless he has to. Just fits the overall approach we've seen thus far. Players' coach. Additionally, if they see this, it also buys him some more collateral with his players. Athletes, especially in this age, appreciate some privacy. Except Chad Johnson. And it's good for them to see their coach having their back no matter how small the matter. Philbin didn't say, "I'm prevented from speaking about it." He said, "it's a personal issue."
Douche-baggery from the lack of intelligence and understanding of what semantics means and how this fool thinks; and frankly, double douche-baggery for any FANs that think they must, or need to, know everything. When none of it actually means anything to the games played. Put the two together and you get what you deserve - douche-baggedness. His self defined "personal issue" rational is totally meaningless to reality. I love that he explains why he thought it was a SEMANTICS issue - but outs himself saying it really doesnt fit his definition anyway cause Hartline wasnt injured and wont miss time, etc. And points out that Philbin's definition and his definition really are the same, but lets call the coach a liar anyway. Again, what a douche-bag!
To me, its more sinister and practical than just being a douche. The author has given himself importance. He planted a seed and is now trying to grow it. Basically he invented a story. Watch, this will probably get referred to nationally. Probably by Cole.
Typically, Mike Florio is the go-to guy when it comes to having something like this blown up nationally. Although, it wouldn't have been a story even for Florio if Philbin hadn't personally called up Biggane to set the record straight. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/07/04/philbin-calls-writer-to-defend-his-integrity/
I applaud Philbin on this. I think he handled it well from beginning to end. He's under no requirement to disclose anything at this point in time. And that's all I care about... is his offense punishable by the league? Hell no. Who cares. Blogger overreaction. Bring on Hard Knocks!!
Got to love how Biggane failed to mention that Philbin is restricted by HIPPA. Leave it to Florio to be passive aggressive.
There's an admitted grey area with respect to HIPAA. If HIPAA totally guided what the NFL could and couldn't do then they'd never be allowed to divulge any injuries, surgeries, etc. Obviously there has been a waiver of some rights guaranteed by HIPAA, probably written into the contracts. But there's probably language in the waiver that dictates where it applies and where it doesn't. It would seem that Philbin is saying that because it was non-football, a medical condition rather than an injury, he shouldn't divulge. But he also implied that he shouldn't divulge because he'd be back by training camp. If there's language in the waiver that grants NFL teams the ability to disclose medical issues if they're going to affect mandatory practices then Brian's missing the mandatory mini camp may have technically granted Philbin the right to disclose the appendectomy. It MAY have. I don't know one way or another. But it's obviously safer to err on the side of caution which could be what Philbin did. Either way Biggane was off base for calling it a lie. It wasn't even a bending of the truth. He revealed as much information as he found prudent to reveal, and if he revealed any more then he would have opened himself up for potential lawsuit (not that it would have ever come to that, realistically) so that they could hash out in front of a judge whether Hartline's missing of mandatory mini camp did or did not give Philbin the right to disseminate his private medical information of a non-football, non-injury medical condition. Philbin erred on the side of respect for the player's privacy and there is nothing wrong with that. Biggane should have apologized.
I think it is interesting that Philbin responded to this. It would seem that he or someone is monitoring the media openly now...
Harvey Greene has always monitored everything the media says. The people in charge of the Dolphins' football operations haven't always cared to hear what he has to say.
I was skeptical of Philbin (due to him never being a head coach) when he was hired. However, I've been really impressed with how he's handled practically everything so far. I want to see this team on the field before I get too excited about him, but he's winning me over. His personality seems perfectly suited to be an NFL head coach. Not only do I have no complaints about him, I find myself genuinely liking the guy. He handled this situation just like he's handled every other situation so far... respectfully... and with intelligence, wisdom, and class.
Biggane is not new to the Fin beat. But he is pretty unwilling to admit a mistake: A couple of seasons back I emailed him to point out he had made a pretty basic factual mistake and used it as the entire premise of a Fin's article. He did reply and actually blamed his source for the error, and also made a similar semantics argument he has here.... I note that he apparently, has edited the "liar" blog to omit that whole section. I don't get why he can't just say "my bad", I have seen better writers such as Dave Hyde, do so.
oh I have no doubt that the organization has monitored the media closely, I just find it interesting that a response directly from the person profiled was issued. Except for the last days of the previous regime trying to stop stepping on it's self, this organization has presented it's self as unaware and uncaring for the better part of the last 10 years.
Comments to stories always crack me up (no I didn't write that ^^^^^) Reading yahoo comments make you question society.
I agree... whenever I think this place gets bad I just look at comments from Yahoo Sports, PFT, and local news media sources... I am much more thankful when I come back here.
Rounding the far turn, it's Biggane on the outside making his move ahead of Omar and Armando...we've got a horse('s backside) race again!
Biggane is just a hack, and is showing his true incompetency here. Philbin has more class than the entire list of coaches we've had since Don Schula, maybe Jimmy Johnson. I get the feeling Philbin is as thoughtful and considerate of his players as he is smart. I like the guy and hold out considerable hope for his upcoming tenure as our HC.
