I have been pondering lately about smart phones and I think i will get one in the near future. Problem is, I don't know one from the other, what all the new gizmos with them do, etc. I'm on AT&T and don't know if the network makes a difference or not. any good advice from all the young techies out there who are up on all of this?

    Thanks!

Easily the top 2 phones out, not just on ATT are:

    Samsung Galaxy S3
    HTC One X

don't fall for the hype or the saleman pitch from anyone that tells you iPhone. iPhone is just an inferior phone unless you have tiny hands and are scared of a big screen. I have a Galaxy Nexus because I like having updates directly from Google but the phones above a little newer and have some better features. Either way all 3 phones destroy iPhone

Thanks, but do you know if the smart phones use the same sim cards as the regular cell phones?

Yes and no. They are the same assuming they are the same size card. If you're currently using a sim card that fits in a new phone then you're fine....but some new phones have gone to the micro sim card.

Just wondering, Why do you want to keep your sim card? If you get a new phone they'lll give you a free sim card.

I have a family plan with 4 lines. When I wanted to upgrade and my line wasn't eligible for an upgrade at the time, I would order a new phone on another line that is eligible. When the new phone arrived, I simply took the sim card out of my phone and put it in the new one and they have worked fine with my line. I was wondering if the sim cards are the same because my line is not eligible for upgrade until than November but I have 2 other lines that are. I am considering the Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC One X phones that you had suggested and if they use the regular sim cards, I am good. Would you happen to know if they do?

Before you buy an Android phone, ask yourself what you want out of your phone. What's important to you? Specifically, what features do you want/need? Yellow Snowman is giving you a recommendation against a specific product, rather than giving you good reasons to buy the two phones he's recommending. You haven't explained what you hope to use the phone for, so it's tough to recommend anything.

I recently upgraded from a Iphone 4 to a Droid Razr Maxx. I didnt hate my Iphone but there are certain things that made me choose the Maxx....
    - Best battery life by far of any smartphone. I charge it once every day and a half where as by comparison, other android phones and iphones I charged up 1-2x a day. I use a lot more data then most people ever will but considering I use my phone all day constantly, Im quite pleased.
    - Screen size is perfect; it still fits nicely in a pocket even with a case.
    - Google GPS is 2nd to none
    - All Verizon iPhones are 3G...I wanted 4G for 10x faster web browser.
    - Web browsing experience is more like a computer as opposed to mobile sites where you cant do everything you would normally do.

I wouldnt advocate against an iPhone...what I would say is if you were going that route just wait for a 4G iPhone.

The iPhone 4S supports HSPA+. Since DeDolfan is on AT&T and not Verizon, he won't run into the same problem you did.

I have the IPhone 4S and I like it. If I were you though I would hold out a little longer until Fall. The IPhone 5 could be out and you can compare from there with the best phones out.

There is nothing iPhone brings that Android can't, conversely there is numerous things Android brings that iPhone currently does not. Additionally no iPhone is 4G. The best iPhone has is 3G+ and they gave a software update that changed 3G+ to say 4G when its not. It is BS to be honest. Granted no phone is true 4G, but a current "4G" phone is so much faster than an overrated iPhone....not to mention numerous other features Android is just superior at. iPhone is just master marketers, they will come out with new version phones that android has had for 4-6 years prior.

For the record I have both Android and Apple phone. Android is just far superior. You did get good advice before though. If you're getting a phone soon then its Android all the way. If you plan on waiting then iPhone may be an option if they improve...we dont know when iPhone is coming out for sure though

I'm drunk, so it's troll feeding time.

Apple shows AT&T users the 4G logo to conform to AT&T's wireless marketing; Internet outraged.

Then why are you bashing the iPhone for it?

    Ah. That's why.

4-6 years prior! That is amazing, considering Android isn't 4 years old yet. Apparently the iPhone travels through time. Beat THAT, Google!

Your in-depth comparative reasoning is both compelling and convincing.

HSPA+ is like 3G and a half. LTE is 4G. No iphone is true 4G.

Thats just not true. I get over 8MBPS on downloads on my Maxx in an area thats tough to get any service in and with the nearest server being over 50 miles away in Seacacus, NJ. I didnt do any special yet to it. 4g speeds on downloads are expected to be 6-10MBPS on d/l and 2-5MBPS on uploads. Im blowing that away.

Android had been out for a while overseas...it should be about 4-5 years old as an OS. Its made a lot of great strides.

This Is true, I pointed that out earlier. Only Crapple fan boys think you can upgrade hardware with a software update lol
Sorry pal, not true. The current "4G" is called 4G because the LTE networks being built but none are true 4G. I get what you are saying but technically no phone is true 4G. This article will explain to you what I'm talking about:

    http://money.cnn.com/2010/12/01/technology/4g_myth/index.htm

For the record I have a Verizon 4g phone and routinely get over 20mb download speeds. My work iPhone 4s isn't close in speed because it's just 3G

Good advice, however, I'm not really sure what they all do so I'm kind of lost there. I don't plan to use it much for internet browsing, maybe a little email, run a few apps [however it's done :) ]. Other than that, I'm pretty lost.

That article is from 2010 and it assumes 4G is interpreted as LTE advanced which is faster 4G but something no wireless provider anywhere in the world has actually setup (or is actually anywhere close to setting up). Actually only the US Japan and a few other countries actually have anything resembling an actual 4G network. Its still in its infancy stages. That doesnt mean its not 4G. Not to be biased but Verizon and a few Japanese companies actually have the most advanced 4G networks right now anywhere so how can a measure like LTE advanced be used when it hasnt even come close to being actually established yet? It cant.

If you want app selection, then the iPhone and its App Store are for you. Larger library, no security risks, better apps, and near-universal compatibility compared to the Android Store.

Depending on what you want to do with mail, then it's a wash between Android and iOS: email is email. If you're heavily into GMail, then Android will deliver a better experience, but the GMail app on iOS (and the web browser GMail) are both pretty good regardless.

I suggest you wait for iOS 6 and the next iPhone before you decide. We're about two months out if history holds.

You missed the point. I didn't assert that the iPhone has LTE. I asserted that your experience with Verizon does not translate to what DeDolfan's experience will be with AT&T. HSPA+ > CDMA. You are describing an experience he will never have, because he doesn't have Verizon.

Android came out September 2008. It's a little over 3 1/2 years old right now. Yellow Snowman's assertion that iOS is somehow 6 years behind something that didn't even exist 6 years ago implies that iOS is capable of time travel, which is one hell of a killer feature.

Exactly my point. Current 4G isn't actual 4G but governments have allowed them to market it as such because it is a new generation/technology in data speed even though it isn't true 4G. Thats what I'm saying. Technically what you were saying was wrong, But for the lay person and for practicality purposes, you are correct. I'm just pointing out the telecom marketing ploy is all. Calling something 4G sounds better than super-hype 3G lol

If those are the things you do with your phone, I suggest the Iphone. It has great browsing, good email, and the apps are better and released quicker on iOS.

A Galaxy S3 has bigger screen, and all the newest android goodies, like NFC, beats audio, better camera (I know the next Iphone camera will top all though), and the new LTE network.

Bigger screens, physical keyboards (total waste with swype and swiftkey), expandable memory, all extra things to consider in which Android phone you get.

If you just use your phone for the things you mentioned, an Iphone is most likely the best route.

I generally think the Iphone is superior for the average user, but for power users like me, it's not even close. (Partly due to Android phones being released more often.)

I could go punch for punch with Desides about why my EVO 4G LTE is better, but if your smartphone use is phone, messaging, internet, email, apps, Iphone is the top choice.

I'm not sure I agree with Android being better for 'power users'. My jailbroken 4S can do almost anything, and doesn't have the fragmentation issues that Android does.

Fragmentation issues......lol. Only crApple people use that excuse. And why would you compare a jailbroken iPhone to a non-rooted Android device? Oh I gotcha because it takes jailbreaking your phone to do things that Android does out of the box....got it. I have them both, only reason to get iPhone right now is if you have tiny hands lol.

It's not what Iphone can do to me, it's what it can't do.

Widgets, Custom Launchers, Automation, Alternate Keyboards, Custom Roms, Removable Storage and Battery, Better App integration, Better Notifications, etc..

Hardware wise I don't even see how a 3.5" screen is acceptable, 4.7" of beautiful Super LCD 2 right here.

While I think they could tighten up it up a bit, as a power user, I like that new better phones come out every quarter instead of every year.

As a smartphone junkie I would recommend these phones:

-International Samsung Galaxy S3 (I'm currently using this)
For faster Developer support & not locked down

    -ATT Galaxy S3
    LTE speeds

    -International Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Same as Int S3 & newest OS, Jelly Bean

    -Any carrier Galaxy Nexus
    Developer support & Jelly Bean

Its actually not true. Again I have both iPhone 4S and Galaxy Nexus (iPhone for work, Nexus for kickass pleasure). My wife also has a Galaxy Nexus. She is probably 5'2 and she has no problem using the Nexus 4.65" screen with 1 hand. So the fact that you've bought into the fact that you can't use the whole thing with 1 hand is bogus if even my little wife can. I doubt any guys here have smaller hands than she does. Not to mention the million other benefits of having a larger screen has for things like web browsing and movie watching. Its so much more enjoyable reading emails or news articles on a larger screen because the much larger screen real estate is just so nice.

I'm telling you, you're missing out on such a small screen. I do think a screen can get too big, like the Note 5" screen is just ridiculous. But a 4.5-4.7" screen is just perfect. 3.5" apple screen is just too tiny when you have so many better options available.

99% of that can be done if you want to jailbreak your iPhone. If you're a "power user" then its really a simple task.

RE: screen, the 3.5" fits much better in my pocket, and doesn't have the brightness shot up way too far.

And yes, its nice to have a phone come out every quarter. I would prefer having a phone that has hardware and software both made to compliment one another.

You'd have to make a legit point before I'd consider trying to disprove it first. The OP is talking about buying a new phone, why in the world would he care about a version of Android from 5 years ago? All he cares about is that the current OS is silky sexy smooth which it is.

To further my point, when people are buying a PC do they really give a rats-*** that Windows has as you put it "fragmentation". Answer is no they don't and thats because its a non issue. Its really a quite petty and pointless thing to bring up by you to be honest.

If you are buying a smartphone you absolutely should care if your software was designed specifically for the hardware.

Using Windows to support your argument is not a good thing. Windows is not user-friendly at all.
