Seems like a bit much to me.....

"Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will appear at an autograph signing at a mall in Charlotte on Saturday, but his ink won't be cheap.

According to the Charlotte Observer, Newton is asking $125 to sign a photo, $150 to sign a football and $175 if he scratches his name on a jersey or shirt. Want it personalized? Sure, he'll do that for an extra $50.

The Observer reports Saturday's event is Newton's sixth for GT Sports Marketing, the company he signed with out of Auburn.

Newton is scheduled to sign from 1:30 to 4 p.m., immediately after Bo Jackson and before former NBA player Larry Johnson.

Newton's marketing agent at IMG told the paper his client signed with an autograph company to avoid fake or unauthorized merchandise."

Cam is a turd. That being said, he isn't the first nor the last to do this. All our childhood hero's do this crap. Not gonna kill Cam for being all about the money when most these guys are the same way.

Any pro athlete that charges for autographs is a douche. And I wish I had the chance to tell them in person.

Why? Most fans would just take the autograph and flip it for cash if they have the chance.

Oh, please. Its not like Cam Newton is clubbing baby seals for money. Rather, Cam is charging people money for his autograph. If the market will bear these prices, no one should judge him. If you don't want to pay the money, don't. Its not like his fans are entitled to free autographs. Its not like he's the only athlete in the world to charge for an autograph. And would it be less horrible if he charged $75? Where do you draw the line?

Good for him. If people wanna pay for it, good for them as well.

I wouldn't pay for an autograph from another human being, but that's just me.

I recently got an autograph from Michael Vick. It was free. All I had to do was wait an hour in line. That's the way it should be.

Never had to pay for an autograph before. I usually get autographs personalized if it's a 'meet & greet' and they have the time. I'm not big on the charging another 50 bucks for them to put your name or a friends on the item they autograph.

It is actually. Makes your business look a hole lot better that your giving back to the community rather then raking in as many PENNIES as possible.

Also, if they were doing this because people sell it. Why are they charging MORE for personalized .... *******s

I'm going to judge him. I think it's a disgusting display of greed. Greed is tearing this world apart. It sickens me to think a multi, MULTI millionaire is charging people for his autograph. Does he have a right? Yes. I just find it to be in very bad taste.

    Nice sig by the way....

Why get a football or jersey signed by a player at an event like this? To have a piece of sports memorabilia that has value, right? What's wrong with the sports marketing company that Newton works for charging for valuable memorabilia? It isn't like the case of kid in his sickbed who is visited by the player, or a school visit where the player signs personal messages for the kids. He wouldn't charge for those. This is a business selling an item of sports merchandise at a mall. Newton gets a piece; sure. But it's still business.

So he's at a mall to make money off his autograph? Why? I'm not saying he's a bad person. I'm sure he's a good person in fact. I just find it greedy.

Greed isnt even frowned upon anymore. "Get yours" "Its business".

Years ago I watched Cal Ripken Jr sign autographs for over an hour after a spring training game in Florida to anyone who wanted one for free.He did this after every game and seemed to enjoy makeing fans happy.I guess Cam can do what he wants but the days of players truely appreciating the fans have changed.

Do you have any reason to believe that Cam does not sign autographs for free at training camp in addition to his for-pay session?

And as for your beloved Cal Ripken, here's a link to HIS for-pay autograph session: http://www.creativesportsent.com/calrijrbaora.html Looks like Mr. Nice Guy Ripken is charging MORE than Cam Newton. But of course, no one's bashing Cal Ripken.

Cam Newton haters gotta just admit that he's an excellent QB and he's here to stay.

Sorry but I wish that would make people realize who really appreciates fans and support especially when its kids waiting in line. He should feel like a douche.

With the internet driving sports memoriablia to an alltime high with craigslist, ebay, amazon etc.....people will do anything to get something signed by them. I once was at a marlins spring training game in jupiter, there was this white trash looking dude, with a binder the size of a pickup truck....with every players card, he was pushing kids out of the way to get random minor leaguers auto graphs with the hopes they'd end up the next big thing so he could obviously sell the hell out of them.

He makes "men" look terrible trying to get an autograph, I even felt dirty asking for one afterwards because the players obviously had a hesitant look when a guy was holding out a ball or something as opposed to a child. So I naturally started asking them to put "to chris"...making it more personal for me, and not for monterary gain. Most players were cool with that.

So obviously, I see why Cam's doing it, no problem from me. And like anything else thats consumer driven, if people have a problem with it, don't show up and try your best getting a cam signature at training camp. The signing was meant to take place for 3 hours, only last 1 1/2. So the people spoke. Heisman trophy winner, Rookie of the year etc etc.....yet, people didnt want to pay money to get his signature. The people (for the most part) spoke. Thats the beauty of this country....we have a choice.

So you are making millions of dollars and you still charge for your autograph? That's just plain greed. Unless that money goes to charity or something I don't agree with it. Even if fans have to pay for it that won't stop them from selling it, so it's stupid that kind of justification.

You don't want them to sell it? Just add a name to it, they will have a hard time trying to commercialize it. It's that simple.

I agree that it is greed, no doubt. Cam Newton and Cal Ripken, and all these athletes who charge even ONE DOLLAR for their autographs are by definition greedy. My point is, let's not all gang up on Cam Newton. Its the irrational hatred towards the man that made his autograph session National Sports News, while Cal Ripken charges MORE and nobody cares.

As an aside, if you could make $30,000 in a few hour's time, would you do it? Would you do it even if you were already getting paid $22 million over 4 years? I would. 30 grand is a LOT Of money!!!

You are getting paid money to play. But need to be accessible and treat the fans the way you would want to be treated. Charging $125 is really not fair for those that have to save that money for family.

I wouldn't mind him charging if as someone said it went to charity. Or even if there was some special perk. I don't know what they would be exactly. Maybe autographing something game worn or that type of thing.

No-one is hating. They are saying he doesn't come off as a very good person, and between this and his college scandal he really doesn't come off as one. At all.

Being a great person > being a great QB

They aren't related but the world needs more of one than the other, and you can certainly be both.

I don't think it's a guarantee he will be but I do feel he is the real deal. He had an amazing rookie season passing wise, and he's only going to get better. I'm happy, too. Before Lebron, he was the one to hate on.

I'd do it in a heart beat................ and then I'd go to the nearest children's hospital and donate it to a child who's 30k away from having his life saved.

A few things about this whole thing:
    1. We can criticize Cam all we want for not signing for free, but free signings mean that not every fan who wants an autograph is walking away with one. Having a pay session makes it possible for a die-hard fan to be guaranteed an auto.
    2. With all the counterfeit crap out there, I'm guessing these pay sessions come with some type of authenticity.
    3. I'm not a Cam fan, but in his defense the guy does sign thousands of free autos, and from what I've read he's typically the last guy to leave the field b/c of it.
