http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolp...-loyal-reader-of-this-blog-or-my-columns.html Glad to see Philbin giving the line a chance to gel. If no OLineman is clearly better or worse at RG and RT, then it's best to give the line time to form chemistry rather than look for minute upgrades to one spot at the cost of cohesiveness. Garrard looking great. Tanny may get time to develop. Keep doing your back-stretches David.
I'm not an OL coach so I don't know which answer is better but it does seem to me that this approach with the OL may pay off more than Sparano's approach. Sparano always seemed convinced he was going to find some combination of pairings that when put together fit like tumblers in a lock and would open a path to the city of Incan gold.
Columbo discovering El Dorado. In a man-blocking, in-line scheme (Sparano) each man's superiority over the man opposite him is the key. I get why Sparano cared about finding the *best* guy at each spot. In a zone blocking scheme (Philbin), cohesiveness is even more important. The Denver Broncos were the epitome of this for YEARS. On their own, each of those linemen weren't all-world, but as a unit they paved the way to thousands of yards on the ground. I think we're seeing that philosophy at work here. Hopefully with similar results.
Very true. That's a good comparison. We've been fortunate too so far that the 5 starters have stayed intact. Look at the Broncos OL last season for one example. Individually, most of their 5, who all started the entire season, had poor individual PFF ratings, both run and pass blocking. But, the Broncos rated very high for running the ball.
I don't think the criticism is really justified. Sparano's approach in terms of OL is pretty common, every coach we've had in the last decade plus has done the same thing. Sparano also at one point arguably had the best offensive line in the league.
I get that from my wife too! lol. "I don;t know who she is! Some guy just has it as his sig pic...... Oh, a sig pic is like an avatar but differ- Oh, well an avatar pic is whatever the guy chooses next to his name... Hey, I can;t help what these guys choose! Yes, honey, I agree, there are some real pervs on my football board who need to get laid." LOL. Sorry guys, it's easier to throw y'all under the bus than convince a jealous woman of ANYTHING. p.s. - please keep posting the sexy sig pics. They keep us married guys going.
Right. It's the five fingers analogy. If you spread your fingers and look at your hand, you see that individually each of those fingers is not all that powerful. But you close them into a fist and WHAM. You can SMASH things (like opposing defenses).
a stable oline early in camp hopefully eliminates those early miscommunication errors to start the season
Marcus Thigpen is also making a case to make the team over Steve Slaton, he is a faster version of Pat Cobbs. Think gunner, returner, good hands out of the backfield and making the NFL minimum, that could tip the scales in his favor. Deej was impressed with Messam, but until the pads come on a back like him won't be making much noise.
Yeah, I think my buddy's grandmother ran for 1,000 yards in '98 under that zone-blocking scheme. She retired in '99 because the league's rules officials banned the use of walkers because they felt it gave her an unfair advantage.
Oh sure, and Slaton can play, his issue is he has no real role with Miller on the team and he is not the ST daemon that Thigpen was in the CFL.
We'll see, Messam really needs full practices and preseason games to show off his skillset, he has good hands as well but without contact the quicker smaller players will always look better
I am surrounded by women,...wife...daughters..their friends..mother in law...maids and I always get funny looks when they glance over to my PC and see those avatars and sigs. Women are so complicated.......and suspicious..
By maids, do you mean wife, daughters, and mother in law?.... if so you have it made. (no pun intended)
I'm not surrounded by any women but I pretend I am just to make internet surfing feel like I'm living on the edge.
I know right!!! Since when is it a crime to have products that clean a runny nose and cure dry skin next to us on the nightstand?!
I like to line 3 pillows next to me under the covers and put a wig on one of them, then play the 3 am quiet game with my laptop on dim. It's the little things like this that you take for granted in a good relationship and don't miss until it's gone, you know.
You ever watch Boston Legal? Remember that one lawyer who had a very elaborate blow up doll? The character was the one with Asperger's Syndrome. Jerry Espenson. He would put her in the passenger seat of the car when he was driving. The cops stopped him once while he was driving in the express lane, as I recall. Then gave him a ticket for there not being 2 real humans in the car. When the cops tried to confiscate his doll as evidence, he flipped out and attacked one of them.
Holy crap, this Jerry Espenson guy looks just like Jeff Ireland. .........which is even freakier b/c Ireland seems like the Asperger's type (which, TBH, would probably aid him as a GM).
As far as lawyer shows go, it is by far my favorite one ever. William Shatner as Denny Crane is hilarious.
