Looked like broken play, h Izzy Gould @IzzyGould Tannehill completed all five passes on the 6 play, 70-yard touchdown drive capped with a TD pass to Anthony Fasano. Think they have serious questions about his status here Izzy Gould @IzzyGould Matt Moore drive started at the 26, and another three-and-out. Dan Carpenter hits a 40-yard field goal. Izzy Gould @IzzyGould David Garrard on his first play from the 2, a TD pass to the left to wide open Legedu Naanee.
Armando Salguero @ArmandoSalguero Unofficial QB stats from the scrimmage: Moore 10-20-0 for 65 yds., 1 TD, Garrard 9-17-0 57 yds, 1 TD, Tannehill 10-13-0 114 yds , 1 TD. Sounds like Tanny had a good day
Stats don't tell the whole story if you have Moore running the 2nd offense against the 1st defense mostly, and Tanny running the 1st offense against the 2nd defense mostly...
From everything I read, it sounded like Moore played a lot with the 2nd team Offense against the 1st string Defense, which had some to do with his struggles. Tannehill and Garrard both took a lot of snaps with first team Offense against 2nd team Defense. I got the impression that the 1st team Defense is WAY ahead of the 2nd team Defense as it should be. But the drop off sounds a little too significant. Could be this way with every NFL team though. -Still great to hear Tannehill having a great day. -So good to finally read about a training camp where the offense isn't miles behind the defense. -Love the obsession with passing the ball and focusing on getting that part of the offense up to speed. Seems like we finally have a staff that understands what it takes to succeed in today's NFL. I get the feeling that they know that the running game will follow
I doubt it, in true Dolphins fashion, they moved the scrimmage back from 9:15 to 8:15. Someone tweeted it, not sure who.
Armando Salguero @ArmandoSalguero No rushing stats (official or not) available from Dolphins scrimmage. Indicative of what I've suspected that running game is now secondary. Just to complement your comment.
The most interesting thing I saw in Joe Philbin's after scrimmage press conference was when a reporter asked if he has reached the point where he's going to start giving one guy more snaps, etc...I expected Philbin to dismiss that but he was honest and said yes we might be, we have to review the film and hold a personnel meeting but yes we might be reaching that point.
The guy is almost honest to a fault. And the way we've come to expect the usual coach speak out of any of our coaches, I'd say it's a refreshing trait from the new HC.
Thought this was coming as I mentioned in Club, the only thing that can overturn it is probably poor preseason performance meets outstanding performance on the 2nd or 3rd teams.
I think it's hard to draw assumptions from pass/run ratio or stuff like that. Maybe a scrimmage is different, but they are still installing offense/defense stuff. Certain days are going to focus on certain packages. The other day Philbin mentioned they were doing Bear fronts on defense, and it sounded like offense was doing fullback stuff. Unless the passing game is dominant or really ahead of the running game, the Dolphins are probably going to be pretty balanced. Mike Sherman's offense draws a lot from Shanahan-style WCOs. It's likely to be balanced, and the pass game is going to use a lot of play action playing off the run game.
No one wants Orton anymore? I keep hearing one thing from player interviews about this coaching staff that I absolutely love. That they are "great teachers". We never heard that about Sparano's staff or Camoron.
What are your indications, CK? Interesting how he was candid, but there still is a little bit of coach-speak. I wonder how this will affect the competition if the players catch wind of the comments. This training camp has gone pretty swiftly. With the new CBA on mandated scheduling, etc., I can imagine the pressure for staff to make a decision early so that person (in this case, the QB) can get the necessary snaps to build that cohesiveness and rapport. With this new CBA, my eyes will be peeled to see if it affects level of competition and injuries (if at all).
I can finally say I was there. I know Moore was against 1st team defense however.....Moore looked like crap (Devlin made more plays). Tannehill and Lamar Miller really showed flashes. Miller plays fast and fluid! Tannehill seems to play it less safe than Moore and Garrard, and was accurate. First play was a beautiful bomb that was a fingernail from being caught by Naanee.
So 10 of 13, with a deep throw that was so close, and a couple of pass interference calls? Good stuff.
Will make mention of Daniel Thomas as well. He was driving piles hard today! Made about 10yrds out of 2 on one play. Practicing very hard. Fuller and Naanee are getting open. Was very impressed with them even w/o the catches. Egnew took a shot today on the sidelines from a LBer (not sure who), and took it like a man which pleased me. Wake and Odrick were bustin through like usual (2nd team Oline). Side note: Jake Long and Paul Solai extremely friendly signing autographs. Great display of kindness and patience from them both.
""There is absolutely no doubt Tannehill was the most impressive QB today. He was calling audibles at the line, ran a no huddle & kept his eyes down field. Tannehill looked real good. Garrard moves the chains, but he is very Pennington-like and enjoys checking down way too much."
Here is Ryan Tannehill's beauty of a TD throw and catch to Anthony Fasano. This is really a great play, on both players' part. Fast forward to 24 seconds and again at the 1:20 mark (although the whole video is worth watching). http://www.miamidolphins.com/media/...72d-499f-bd44-773d9e143bb3&channelName=Recent Heck of a play. That was Derrick Shelby giving chase to Ryan on the scramble. Shelby did that a lot at Utah. He put a lot of pressure on QBs and was quick to react to play developments, rollouts and scrambles and whatnot. Quick twitch guy. Very quick on the trigger when a QB is throwing the ball, gets air and knocks the pass down. Had an unusually high number of batted passes. Thing is, he's not fast, a 4.85 type guy, so it's no wonder Tannehill pretty comfortably dusted him in the race to the sideline, so that he could slow down and zero in on Fasano. Omar Kelly said that Shelby had at least one sack and several other pressures today. He's a guy I wouldn't want to cut, personally.
I don't see why they would. Going fast pace in practice doesn't mean you always have to go fast pace during games.
I would think pretty soon Garrard is about to start taking the lion's share of reps with Tannehill second and Moore behind him...but who knows.
Just saw this. I'm glad he's doing well. I made it a mission to try and figure out the DE position behind Wake, Westerman and Vernon...so I took closer looks at guys like Jarrell Root, Jacquies Smith and Derrick Shelby. Shelby was clearly the most interesting football player, to me.
Your link leads to the Coach Philbin interview. I think you wanted this link. http://www.miamidolphins.com/media/...dd2f#?id=3f0d855d-e72d-499f-bd44-773d9e143bb3
I was there and thought it was a good throw, but I didn't realize how good of a throw until seeing the video. Not only did he make a great play with his feet and turn a broken play into a TD (which I knew already), but he the throw was surgical how he dropped it over the defender. And he did it on the run.
Really nice route and touchdown catch by Rishard Matthews at 0:44 into that highlights video. Pat Devlin threw a strike on that one.
