Joe Philbin has total control of this team. LOVED IT! He isn't the players friend...he is the boss and they respect and fear him. Notice when he walked into the QB meeting to tell them about the depth chart. He walked in and you could feel "coach is here" fog in the room. He will crack a joke with them, but when it comes down to it he is THE MAN! You can see it in the way he runs practice, to the meeting rooms, to one on one interactions with the players. If you look closely, you might even see that chin stick out like a Shula or Cowher. Just hope it translates into wins.
I think he could have been firmer what Chad Johnson. We got a 'this is not a dictatorship' and a 'this is the way it's gonna be' in the span of one minute. Just stick with the latter. Just a minor quibble.
I think Chad got the message. Especially if he watched last nights episode when they asked Philbin if he might not be on the team if he keeps cussing and Philbin said, maybe.
I thought Philbin was a tad wishy-washy with Chad J. On the flipside, I also think you can be firm without being a total jerk. The best approach is somewhere in the middle, IMHO. However, it is his first head coaching gig. I'll cut him some slack. He's a good guy, and a heckuva coach.
I like Philbin, I really do. I like a lot of what hes done with practices and such, and I like the offense and what not that he is helping to bring here (along with Sherman, who he brought). But I don’t know what it is though man. Something about his demeanor (maybe even his appearance, as shallow as that could be) just doesn’t grab me as an assertive leader. Maybe its just the stark difference between him and Sparano… and its not like Sparano’s leadership style did a lot for us in the W/L column. But I just felt a coach with a style like Tony’s could get players to run through a wall for him. I just don’t get that vibe from Philbin…
Maybe like Tom Landry and Bill Walsh and Marv Levy re appearance? Results matter , not Football GQ , so far I have the belief he will get the most out of his players and they will perform closer to their maximum levels than with the former coach, just my opinion though.
I "think" why he came across a little wishy-washy as you call it is because he tried very hard to make it a private moment and not get it on hard knocks. Thats my take at least...
Those statements don't conflict each other at all. You can say "I'm going to listen to your opinion and you have a say, but at the end of the day I make the final decision based on all input and that is the way it is."
I’m not talking about being unattractive or something, b/c that clearly has nothing to do with football or leadership, lol. I was more talking about physical stature, in combination with an assertive presence/demeanor…
I didn't know much about philbin when he became our HC, but everything he had said has impressed me. Im very optimistic about this regime, I was also a Sprano guy...
The three I mentioned are similar in stature , slim/thin and not the Cowher , Madden or Harbaugh types for demeanor . So far Philbin's communication , creativity and professionalism are showing up at least for me.
The thing about how he handled Chad should not be in question. You don't go up to a guy who you have told he can be himself and then tel him how to act and what to say. If he was dogging a teammate our the organization, that's one story, but cursing at a news conference, no big deal. I think he chose the right time to be suggestive instead of very direct.
both Napoleon & Alexander the great were unimpressive physically. both were 5'4" in height & had deformities: Alexander a crooked back & Bonaparte a limp, receding hair line & a pot-belly. Philbin is in control & obviously competent & confident & knows how to communicate effectively without destroying the dignity of others. I see nothing weak or indecisive in him. so far, he looks very good to me. one thing is already obvious, he is a leader.
