I was watching Pedoria get tossed and then Bobby get tossed the other day, and then the crowd started chanting "Bobby" :pity:......

I would have cheered the ump for tossing him...

Boston media at its finest today. I think it's time the players start ripping the media for dumb things they say/write. It's really unreal how negative the media is here. It's no wonder players sometimes hate playing here.

John Lackey is getting bashed for traveling with the team while he's rehabbing his injury and for drinking in the clubhouse AFTER the game.

Imagine that, the media is bashing a player for being with the team even on road trips to support the team but he's still getting hammered for it. And the player they're bashing is someone who isn't going to throw a single pitch for the 2012 Sox.

It's only one reporter that's bashing him, but the whole Boston media gets lumped together because they're just a joy day in and day out.

Joe Haggerty, he's a sport talk radio host with the Sports Hub I believe.

Apparently the ban is only for home games and on the airplanes, not on the road.

I don't see a problem with, although damn can he just use a little tact, like go in the hotel room and drink....he knows what scrutiny they are under from the press whether it be warranted or not...him doing that knowing the sharks are out and the possibility of getting seen by some over zealous reporter blowing it up is real reeks of him not really giving a sh$t about the team....

Honestly would you do it? is drinking in the clubhouse that freaking vital that you risk it...?

I don't see the problem with it at all, especially for a player who's not even going to pitch this year. If the players are allowed to drink after games on the road, it shouldn't even be an issue. Why should the players have to go into hiding if they want to drink?

I think the bigger question is why does a reporter think this is a big deal, especially ripping him for being with the team. I mean it was a big deal when Youkilis ripped Ellsbury for rehabbing in Arizona instead of with the team and now you have a player who's not going to play this year traveling with the team on every single road trip and he gets knocked for it. It's like the players are in a no win situation.

It's a bonding thing, the players want to chill out and hang out after a game. I don't see a big deal doing it, as long as it's controlled of course.

I really hope the Red Sox players and coaching staff refuse to talk to the media for the next few games. Have one of the players release a statement saying the media is starting to take advantage of the players and what the do. They should simply focus on their play on the field and that's it. If they continue to report nonsense they won't get access to the players anymore. I think something like that could send the media a strong message and I think it would be a good thing to build chemstry around perhaps.

or it could make them more bloodthirsty....if the Yanks did that to the NY media they would have a field day....

This is the nature of "reporting" nowadays....with camera-phones, facebook, and twitter everybody is waiting for that "gotcha" moment...they all try to jab the players and coaches (hell even Joe G. got a little pissed at the NY media yesterday), sports, politics, etc...it is unfortunate..

If he's just walking around after the game pounding beers and is a general distraction to the pitching staff, then I don't see how you don't have a problem with it. I'm not in the clubhouse and I have never met the man, but by all accounts he's an idiot. And to take it a step further, seeing his stupid face on the bench laughing it up while the Sox are in the midst of getting their asses kicked is just adding insult to injury.

Wow, glad to see you back in this thread. Hopefully this means you're back posting here regularly.

Anyway yeah Lackey looks and acts like a jerk and has sucked in a Sox uniform but I really don't see this as being a big deal. Yeah it's annoying to see him laughing but he's not the reason why Beckett and Lester decided to suck this year. Acevescan't be trusted bringing him into a game with runners on base. Or why Adrian Gonzalez only has 12 home runs or why Saltalamacchia and Shoppach have decided to just strike out in every single at bat. But hey at least Crawford is hitting right?

And I'm not defending Lackey by any means but by all accounts his teammates like and respect the guy so perhaps there's more to him that we don't see when the cameras are on.

You need to look at the positives though, Xander Boegarts was promoted to Double A last night (3rd youngest player in the league) and a hit a HR in his debut. Between him, Bradley and Barnes the Sox farm system, especially in Portland is pretty exciting.

In a vacuum, I don't think the act of having a couple of beers in the clubhouse after the game is an issue at all. But this is not in a vacuum. This is the most unlikable group of characters Boston has seen in a very long time. There is something so grating about the makeup of this particular team that trumps any interesting story you might want to root for (the emergence of Ciriaco or the return of Bailey, for example).

And the pitching staff in particular. After the epic collapse of last season and the ****-storm that has ensued this season (no regular with an ERA+ at or above 100), its infuriating for them to continue to maintain this defiance from a PR standpoint. They just don't get it.

I would agree with that. But I still don't think it's a story that a player who's not going to throw a single pitch this year drinking is a big deal, nor do I really think it's something that should be reported. Word is, according to other Boston reporters is that players have drank in the clubhouse on the road all season. Why this particular reporter felt the need to write a story about this one incident is I don't know, strange perhaps?

Middlebrooks has a broken wrist. F this team. One of the only bright spots taken away. Time to root for another September 2011 starting today to get a better draft pick and new manager.

I think we haven't seen the true Bobby because of all these injuries, and he deserves another year.....:shifty:

Sucks for Middlebrooks, hate seeing guys get injured, at least I do anyway, to me it doesn't matter the team, it takes away from the enjoyment.....

Well that's certainly an excuse to keep him for another year. And in all fairness to Bobby, he hasn't had 1 game where he had his A team in.

And yes I agree. I don't care what team the player plays for, I always hate guys getting hurt.

Awful news, I know he was declining health wise the past few years but still doesn't make it any easier. I was fortunate enough to know the man personally and to call him a friend. I will forever remember him hitting me ground balls on the Red Sox spring training fields. After about 20 minutes of non stop ground balls, he told me I could quit if I fielded 10 in a row without an error or letting a ball by, well I did 9 in a row and the 10th ground ball he hit was a complete rocket that I had no chance on. He laughed and said we had to start over. He just loved the game so much that just hitting ground balls to ordinary people just gave him great joy. I'm beyond happy the man lived long enough to see his number retired at Fenway Park. A true legend on and off the field. He will truly be missed. RIP my friend.

Finkle, why is it called Pesky pole? During the Marlin-Sox game, our announcers were talking about it and said he only hit something like 19 career home runs (forget the number and dont feel like looking) and I think only a little more than half were at home.

They never said/couldn't pinpoint if he had one memorable HR around the pole or how it became known as Pesky Pole.

Fink probably knows better, but from what my old man said, he won a game hitting a home run around that pole for a pitcher( Parnell I think) and he after the game was joking around with Pesky who wasn't a home run hitter at all (under 20 hr in his career) and the pitcher dubbed it Peskys Pole......it says 302ft but Remy said in a broadcast one day it is under 300 ft....

The official listing is 302 feet down the RF line to the Pesky Pole, however the unofficial listing is around 295 feet.

Yeah Mel Parnell was the one that named it the Pesky Pole after a HR Pesky hit down the line that helped Parnell win a game.

Really no words to describe that.....got an ovation as well from the crowd in New York last night...

Also from the wtf department....Waldman last night said "I am going to be away for a few days because my Uncle John died"....and went on to say she is related to Pesky and both her and Sterling talked about him for the whole inning.....

Like out on left field who knew?

Sure sounds like Bobby V lost the Sox clubhouse. Apparently players have been texting the ownership all month about how unhappy they are with him that led to a meeting with players and ownership.

    http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/08/14/red-sox-blasted-bobby-valentine-to-owners-last-month/

While it's extremely easy to pile on Bobby V, I do think some, if not all of those players complaining about him need to look at themselves in the mirror. They quit on Francona for whatever reason and now they quit on Valentine. I honestly can't see how Valentine is able to come back for the 2013, even if the player's concerns/complains are 100% false or wrong. Again changing managers might not have been a bad idea but bringing in Valentine obviously was. I just hope the owners and front office know which players are also part of the problem and are able to get rid of them this offseason because again it's not all on Bobby V's shoulders. It's the 2nd year in a row this team, that does have talent, is underperforming.

Pedroia is coming across as an epic d*uchebag this season. You'd be hard pressed to find two players on this roster that have underperformed to the extent that Gonzalez and Pedroia have for a good portion of this season.

This entire organization is a mess. Screw these players.

I am hearing the same sentitment from my Sox buddies about Pedroia, what was once a cool cockiness, has turned into a cry baby....much like Youk was.....

Every time he makes an out, he scream swears loudly enough that you can hear it on the broadcast...it is baseball man, you arent getting a hit everytime out....

To be fair to Pedroia, he's played almost half the year hurt.

I know it's easy to pile on Valentine but to have 17(!) players attend a meeting to complain about the guy is a bit much. I can see a manager not getting along with 4 or 5 players each year but to have 68% of the roster against the guy he must be doing something. And it's not like Valentine is a saint, this has happened to him in every place he's managed, to not think this would have happened is a mistake on the ownership's part.

But you're right the players do need to share blame in this, for the most part they're all underperforming and have quit on mangers for the past two years. Like I said in my previous post they need to look in the mirror too.

I'll give Pedroia a pass on this, the guy does nothing but play hard and play hurt. It would be hard for me to ever question him.
