John Beck looked like the second coming in the preseason.. we all know how that ended in 2007... Let's not delude ourselves in to thinking that there is pressure in the preseason for someone guaranteed to make the team. Heck, even Henne looked like he turned the corner last year.
I don't remember Beck looking lights out in preseason. We were just so desperate for a QB that we wanted to think it meant he was. Think about all these years we've been watching second round talent and pretending it looks like first round talent. This is the first time in a long time we are actually seeing first round talent.
I don't remember Beck really looking good at all in the 2007 preseason....actually quite below average. And Henne was very average, save for the Tampa Bay preseason game.
Hopefully this makes our blocking a little better. How you ask? Well... Do you want to be the guy that lets your teams #8 overall pick, possible franchise QB of the future get smashed into the ground? Obviously it won't make anyone into a better blocker on a physical level, but maybe it's a mental push in the right direction and helps focus a bit.
I'm not trying to compare Beck or even Henne to Tanny, I'm just pointing out that preseason performance can be misleading. I'm sure the coaching staff is looking at a body of work far greater than 3-4 possessions tonight by Tannehill. Hopefully that body of work will lead them to conclude that he is the starter and ready to go.. But even if he goes 12-15 and throws three TD's, I'd still hope that they look at other factors that may hamper his ability to be successful and grow if he is given the nod.
I think Tannehill actually gets extended playing time much like Martin did last week. Not into the late third quarter obviously, but I could see him getting the entire first half considering that: 1) We are a QB down and Devlin isn't going to get tons of snaps. 2) There is little to any benefit in seeing Moore extended against backups.
It can be, just see Colt McCoy last year. Beck isn't a good example though IMO. I'm pretty sure CK last year had a post talking about how QBs in the preseason who finished with a 100+ passer rating would likely have good regular seasons (perhaps he was referring to just starters, I can't recall). While mostly true, I know McCoy went away from that idea.
If I'm playing in the NFL and getting paid millions to block people, my effort is the same whether it's Tannehill or Ryan Leaf. I'd really hope they block as hard for Moore.. Then again, wasn't there some concern several years ago that the OL wasn't putting in the same effort for Henne?
Sometimes you think you are giving 100% and you really aren't. Not that you are slacking or anything, but certain things and circumstances can heighten your focus. Over the long haul I don't think it matters, but it looked like we lacked focus and cohesion in that first game (which is normal). I think it certainly could be a short term boost. IE More emphasis on "We cant look like we did last game" maybe more sense of urgency to get it together. That sort of thing.
I hope RT just comes out and dominates tonight. I think Moore will play a good game tonight, though. He has a chip on his shoulder, and returning to Carolina, I think we will see a great performance out of MM too. Here's to hoping both play lights out.
I kinda wish Garrard was healthy so that there would be no doubt at this point. I mean long term, it doesn't matter anyway. Lets just hope the rest of the team (ie defense) plays up to their ability.
Beck had a 2-3 TD game with over 100 QB rating in the 2nd or 3rd preseason game. He looked pretty good, though he always seemed jumpy.
NSFW picture (curse word) describing the situation: http://weknowmemes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/bane-cat.jpg
He failed to get a TD in any other game though, and also had a 2 INT game. I'm not saying he was terrible that preseason, but I don't think on the whole that he looked great or anything. He also only competed 50% of his passes in the game he got 2 TDs.
So we should be hoping Tannehill plays like Beck today. Whew. I mean this tells me we can almost not take anything away from preseason success.
Great. So based on him doing well against zero pass rush, the staff decides to start him this season... and he gets destroyed by all the best pass rushes. Joe Philbin needs to REALLY battle test this kid. Call the Carolina coach and ask him to send mixed-coverage zone blitzes at Tanny all day. Seriously. LEt's see if he can handle real NFL ****. Not foot half off the gas defense.
Yup, that was my tought / will too, but according to Omar RT will have 20 - 30 snaps. Omar Kelly @OmarKelly RT @WRSever: how long do you think THill plays tonight?» 20-30 snaps according to Philbin.
Enough with him , he never was going to be an answer , Jeff Beck or Beck had almost as much of chance to be that imo.
It was the third preseason game of his rookie year, against the Bucs. He threw two touchdowns. I think one was late in the game in the hurry up offense. He looked good at that point. Of course, Cam Cameron follows up that game with Beck starting the final week of the preseason, but recall the starters rested as is customary that fourth game. And even Cam Cameron took the night off from being a head coach as he wanted to see his team from a different angle. Oh it was all downhill after that. Jesus... Ryan Tannehill please make us forget about these awful... woeful... atrocities inflicted on Dolfans. And we'll never discuss Beck/Henne again.
Having Ryan start, not just tonight, but game 1 regular season, very well could be the perfect storm to get all 53 players and all 3 units to rise up together. Each pulling their own weight, each being key to success. The young QB and young WR/TE group tells the OL to dominate and assist in giving them maximum time in the passing game (with lots of rollouts too), it tells the RB to dominate when their number is called. It tells the D to rise up and be the unit we depend on to hold down the fort, and of course special teams can be special and shine in their own right. Giving the young group this years worth of experience could be a key positive paying dividends as each other unit comes together to PICK up the slack so to speak.
30 snaps could very well be the entire first half depending on how long our drives are and the opponents as well.
It was the flip side of the coin. If non-rookie QBs consistently fall below the Mendoza line of an 85 passer rating in preseason...it's really not a good sign for what they'll do in the regular season. Important distinction because even if you do well in preseason it's no guarantee of success in the regular season. But if you do poorly, it tends to be more predictive.
That's a completely silly statement. There's no math involved when you're starting a rookie QB in a preseason game against a vanilla 1st team defense and then sitting him on the sideline during the second half while backups are fighting to put a win on the board.
**** that, after the long list of failed QBs we've endured the past 12 years, we're more than worthy.
