If I was to get a new jersey, it would be 21. I think he will be fine, and mark my words will make the pro bowl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYdfBxOrQ90
He hasn't lived up to his potential and has been mouthy/had work ethic problems. That and most of this board has bafflingly divided itself into two partisan gangs either supporting Sean Smith or Vontae Davis and have dumb**** clashes whenever one or the other is brought up, despite them both basically being in the same boat.
Iv seen enough from Vontae to believe that he is truly elite. Im glad he got exposed on HK episode 1 and responded by literally body slamming Steve Smith on his head. Immature, but I really think that he has what it takes to be all pro. I think its funny that last seasons slow start and 90 seconds on HK and ppl are ready to dump him and move on.
Except for maturity Davis does have what it takes to be a pro bowl player. He may or may not develop that enough to make it the pro bowl while a Dolphin.
He hasn't lived up to his potential, but I don't think he's been as bad as some people say. He's been a solid corner.
He's not afraid to attack the los in run support and he does have IMO innate cover skills. His only problem is mental maturity. Why the heck does he come to camp not in prime physical condition? He should have been working out all off season like a mad man. For him to be getting gassed in those early passing drills, such as was featured on HK #1, that is really inexcusable. I think one reason the coaches are playing him so many snaps, is to help play him into shape. I'd estimate he played more snaps against the Panthers than any of the DBs.
Fan of Patrick Cobbs?....or THE Patrick Cobbs? Hmmm PS: I like Vontae but Steve Smith slammed Vontae on HIS head. Not vice versa.
I think vontate is our best player on D but hes a jackass sadly dunno if his talent will ever pan out
Obviously, there's more than the spot on HK and last season's slow start...the coaches certainly see something else wrong with this kid, or he would not have lost his starting spot. Marshall isn't playing at an all-pro level, but he's playing (and practicing) better than Davis is now and that's what's frustrating about Davis... He shows flashes but not consistently. I'll give you that the end of last season he was playing well, but the issues of being lazy and mouthy are now outshining his play on the field. That's why there is hate on him...I agree, I think he has the ability to be much, much better than he is right now, but he's got to show it before we really believe it...
I think the hate is because in Hard Knocks he's coming across as a selfish, self-entitled, spoiled brat.
I think you should watch again. Steve Smith has his hands inside the shoulder pads of Vontae right near his neck. They wrestle around a bit and yes Vontae falls on top, but only because Steve Smith pulls him down backwards with him and Vontae lands awkwardly.
Yet Vonte gets the penalty? Freaking SCABS. Vonte has been a real solid starter with this team for 2 years. I think it makes the coaching mad that his maturity won't allow him to be the great player he could be. He looked good against Carolina to me.
Yeah, I'm not sure it's his play on the field that is pissing the coaching staff and some fans off. It's his attitude off the field.
I rewatched the play about 10 times on NFLN Rewind, and I thought he deserved the penalty. Smith was 9-10 yards downfield engaging in a block and Vontae went right hand to the helmet/back of neck in an attempt to slam Smith down across his body. It was obviously flagrant. Smith had already gotten under Vontae's skin earlier in the drive, and Davis couldn't contain himself. B/c of his immaturity, we went from 3rd & 3 at the 34 to instead 1st & 10 at the 19..... and Carolina scored a TD a few plays later. That might've cost us the game.
VD had no leverage and his body was twisted to the point there is no way I can say he won that ......battle. SS put him down. IMO.
I didn't like the call on VD, should have been a foul on both. I do like Steve Smith and those 2 do have a history. VD talked trash last year or the year before, something like that and Steve just ate his breakfast, lunch, dinner and his momma. Btw, Steve donated 100k to the victims of the Colorado shootings, did any Dolohins player donate anything?
Powerslam debate aside, Vontae Davis was the best corner on the Miami Dolphins against the Panthers that night. Sean Smith had that INT robbed from him, but was pretty average other than that. Unimpressed with Richard Marshall. I still can't think of why Miami's got Sean Smith predominantly at LCB - Vontae is much better against the run, and I'd argue (when his head's screwed on correctly) is a better player than Smith. I never understood, or ever heard, why Sparano and Mike Nolan flopped them last year. Or why Coyle has done the same this year.
Vontae is being pushed by this staff to give 110%. That would be the first time in his short career anyone has done that FOR him.
He can drink all ****ing night and never train at all if he shuts guys down. But when he's getting beaten, it's an issue. Let's see how he plays in game 3 this week.
I thought that our boy looked good on episode 3. Just for my own clarification the replays that HN had from the game show steve smith on his head.
I disagree. I think he comes off as a guy trying to come to grips that his younger brother may be a murderer.
I agree that with Davis, it all comes down to his maturity or lack of, in this case. He has loads of talent, but he just doesn't play to a high level throughout the game. While he can look like a Pro Bowl player at times, he also can look like one of the worst DB in the NFL on other plays. Hopefully Davis will get his act together this year or I could see this coaching staff wanting to get rid of him after the season. I would love to see him become one of the top DB's in the NFL, but he has a long way to go and the need for a change of attitude, before he can reach the status of one of the best CB's in the NFL.
The easiest conclusion would be that Sparano, Nolan and Coyle don't agree with your assessment. And IIRC PFT also disagrees with your assessment of which QB is better against the run. Davis made more big hits, but he also missed more tackles. The missed tackles part was based on what PFT said.
This staff is doing that for all under achieving players imo , good to see the leaders step up and want to motivate themselves and the team.
I don't really get the hate due to hard knocks. Seems like people are over playing just what's been shown IMO. The usual fandom gone awry.
Don't know if I would call it hate, what I've seen is coaches and fans alike trying to make his lack of full time effort get pointed out to him so he has a chance to step up now not game 10. He needs to show up in better shape at the beginning of season that looks apparent.
Watch both their legs right before that slam takes place. Vontae suplexes Steve Smith. Smith is the one being slammed. Davis' helmet is coming off, but that isnt his head being slammed. Smith was being a dick. He should've got the penalty.
I have watched it plenty, I stand by my tie ruling. Now lets move on to something of relevance to the 2012 Dolphins performance
