Breaking News: announces Tannehill as Starting QB

Various twitter accounts have the story.

Philbin said no one item made the decision, nothing was handed to Tannehill and Moore was a true professional about the decision.

He said This is the best decision he can make at this time, held out possible change when Gerrard returns.

I hope the rest of the team comes up to speed quickly, especially the offensive line and receivers!

Very impressive for the rookie to win this job. Wish he'd also beaten out Garrard on the field but still, Ryan is a rare rookie.

I didn't expect to hear this announcement till after the 3rd preseason game. I'm excited to see Tannehill under center, and I'm really hoping that we're not making a mistake rushing him in there.

Tannehill didn't seem to make many "rookie mistakes" in the two preseason games and he looked much better than Moore. I am glad he has been named the starter now so he will get more reps with that first team and gain chemistry with guys like Bess, Fasano, etc.

I hope Tannehill continues to prove me wrong. I definitely thought they made a bad decision by drafting him with the #8 pick with so little experience and all.

I have never been happier to be wrong, and i hope he continues to prove it to me and to everyone else. Keep it up!

Remember three weeks ago when it was obvious that the Dolphins had zero intention of even having Ryan Tannehill compete for the starting job?

He is the best QB in camp, therefore he gives us the best chance to win. I get the whole give him time to develop if you have a Marino, Farve, Manning etc... We have Matt Freaking Moore, what is he going to learn watching him?

Just glad this didn't drag out and now we can focus on Ryan getting 3+ quarters of work this week vs Atlanta and start preparing for Week 1 knowing who our QB is.

Garrard would have started if healthy, but I have no problem with Tanne staring over Moore.

This is a terrible idea... he still needs so much work. Unfortunately it is the right choice you put your best talent on the field and if the best QB we got is a rookie with only 20 college games under his belt we're in trouble. I hope im totally wrong and Tannehill lights up the charts but we all know dam well that in past experiences throwing rookies into the frying pan is a terrible idea.

Amazing what happens when a 3 horse race becomes 2.

Fully expect Garrard to be released before the final cuts are announced.

He'd gain less by sitting and watching Matt Moore. Will he have a winning season? Probably not. But that realistically hsould not have been expectations going into this year. Personally, I was looking at personnel development and signs of a coaching staff here for the future. Here's to hoping Tanny performs well and continues to grow as a QB.

I think Garrard stays (if he gets healthy) and Moore is traded for a low round draft choice.

Does this mean that Garrard or Moore is gone? Might as well get rid of both.

Losing season was not going to be defined by starting Tannehill or not. This team is far from a winning team, not even Tom Brady could do it. At least now our QB can learn and we can look to other areas to improve.

He has definitely been impressive CK, no doubt about it. A lot more impressive than I expected when we drafted him.

My only concern now is that he could possibly be surrounded with poor protection, no WRs, and possibly no running game.

That’s never a good formula for success for a young kid…

    What is terrible about it?

We are a team that is going nowhere this season. Doesn't matter if Moore or Garrard are our starting QB. This team is going nowhere. So, that said...there is no reason to leave him parked on the bench and not gaining reps/experience. The only...and I repeat ONLY...reason to leave him on the bench is if there is an established top level Qb in front of him. That doesn't exist with this team so there is no reason for him to sit.

Who is the QB most familiar with the offense? Ryan.
Who is the QB of the future? Ryan.

The future is now and he knows this system better than anyone.

To the people that say he could get Carr'd. Well, it is all about his mental makeup. David Carr couldn't handle it. Peyton Manning got rocked his rookie season. It happens, especially when you play on a crappy team. If anything this season should make him tougher. It should make him a better QB down the road when he has to face adversity. This season should be the perfect training ground for him.

Its got everything to do with Matt Moore, if he played better he would be the starter after Garrard got hurt, he didn't, Tannehill did. Tannehill gives you the best chance to win if he is the best QB in camp (Healthy). He wins the job you start him.

    Fun fact everyone:

Ryan Tannehill is the 17th (SEVENTEENTH!!!!!) starting QB since Marino retired. It's unbelievable, that we have had that many QBs since then. Let's hope the man donning number 17 is finally the answer.

Just for fun, can anyone name all 17 QBs off the top of their head?

Doubt it. They aren't gonna bench the QB of the future unless he is injured. Even if he is struggling, you sink or swim with Tanny this year.

The reason why we dont want Tannehill starting has nothing to do with learning from Matt Moore...

Tannehill looks like a mentally strong kid. I find it hard to believe he will get damaged by the evidently lack of talent on offense for this team.
The worrisome aspect is the O-Line, but i think that will eventually improve. We should, for the most part, have a decent O-Line this season.

Jason Jackson today made a great analogy. He said throwing Tannehill out there was like a batter practicing with a batting doughnut. The bat is heavier, and when you lose the doughnut, the bat seems lighter and you can swing it easier. So throwing Tannehill out there to start with a batting doughnut worth of talent now to learn, imagine what he will be like when they take the doughnut off and he gets some talent to play with.
