That's what coach Dan Campbell said to a degree.. My question is how are we gonna keep this kid, continue to develop him? Would you risk putting him on the PS?
I wouldn't put him on the PS. I'd keep him as a 3rd QB on the roster and make him inactive on gamedays.
Devlin isn't toast. Watching his college games and the things he's improved on from year one to year two I'm 200% sure he will develop into a strong backup in this league. If not a starter. He has the things you can't teach and he's improving on the things you can.
Goin off with what these coaches are saying, and they seem like they think he's got value in this league and he can play, the franchise has invested some time into developing him til this point, not sure you can just cut that kind of guy but we"ll see.. IMO, he needs to keep getting stronger..he's not there yet with arm strength.
You remember this video from last year comparing he and Dalton for accuracy?
I was Dalton's biggest fan on this board, so my standard for comparing him to him is pretty high, I like the high release point, and I want him to get bigger and stronger, I think the next two games especially the last one will give us a clear indication as to what were gonna have to do with him, the last game he should get a lot of action.
When the cuts come, we're gonna find out just how serious the praise for both Pat Devlin and Chris Hogan was / is.
Not quite sure how wondering if an improving developmental prospect warrants a spot on the 53 man roster constitutes getting carried away.
I'm talking about the fact that a few weeks ago people were saying Devlin was garbage and now because of a single comment on Hard Knocks, he's a "young Tony Romo." I like Devlin's upside and think he could be a decent backup QB, but I think its funny how we base everything off of what happened in the recent episode of Hard Knocks. When we were loving 7-11, what was everyone saying about Devlin when he missed an open Hogan? Definitely wasn't "Wow, we better save a roster spot for baby Romo, or he's gone!"
Was he really comparing Devlin to a young Romo vs the Romo we have seen since he became a starter in Dallas? The 2003 to 2005 years.
I don't see the comparison. IMO Romo's strongest skill is his ability to extend the play by eluding pass rushers behind the line when his protection breaks down. He's developed into a decent timing passer after struggling with that early in his career. While Devlin's biggest weakness is that he can't extend the play when things break down. He has always been a very good timing passer. Maybe they have similar personalities or other mannerisms, but I don't see the similarities in the style of play.
labels like this are meaningless in the grand scheme of things....honestly, what exactly is a young tony romo and what does it equate to? To the point of what is implied in the thread, yes, Devlin is the perfect #3 and in a season or two an eventual ship/flip QB. The question is really does Moore get shipped/flipped this year if Garrard is healthy? Some picks could be earned for Moore, but doubt any picks would equate to Garrard. In the spirit of "leave the gun, take the cannolli's".....its Leave Garrard and ship off Moore for a pick this year.
I think you're off base to be honest. The improvement in Devlin's play was noticeable both in Week 1 and Week 2 of the pre-season, and there were many posters on this board who commented about it. I think DJ and other posters on this board are just using the "Young Tony Romo" comment more as a validation of what has been seen rather than some type of 180 degree revelation.
Well, look at this way., neither MMoore or Garrard will be here in 2013, barring injuries to THill Devlin offers a cheaper options who will know the offense, with all our FA coming up in 2013 we'd better hope the truth is somewhere in the middle. Keep in mind folks, this OL has lost a Qb to season ending injuries each of the last 3 yrs.
Wasn't it that if inactive, the 3rd QB could go in but then the 1st and 2nd aren't allowed to return to the game. Emergency quarterback rule or something like that.
This is more along what I'd expect us to do: But the most likely result of the change to 46 active players on Sundays may just be that teams will add another active player at another position and keep two quarterbacks active on Sundays. For most teams, having extra depth at another position will be more useful than the ability to insert the third quarterback into the game whenever they please.
