You might have to watch it a few times as I tried to make the timing so that you have time to read what's going on but may not have given enough time.
Marlon Moore puts a solid move on Weems on the deep sideline pass to Gates. That's the play Volin cited as an easy 93 yd TD if Tannehill saw him.
He showed me something last night, finally. Some ball awareness, both on the Int save, and on locating that sideline pass. Needs to play more next week, and be given a shot at KR to see if he has improved there.
That's a helluvan argument CK, using that kind of presentation. Makes me wonder if Gates and Bess shouldn't be the ones out there starting, with Hartline lining up wide and Bess moving to the slot in 3 WR sets.
Right, but a lot of that has to do with the QB's already looking at and throwing to Gates, which makes the safety head that direction. If the QB were looking at Moore (much less throwing to him), the safety would've head the other direction, making Moore a whole lot less wide open.
What you don't see (because I don't have time) is that a play later, the Falcons have clearly had enough worrying about Clyde Gates and they come out with a Shell look, and they straight up double team him off the snap. This opened up Charles Clay to come underneath for a big gain, and Matt Moore got the ball to him, but Clay dropped it.
Another reason why I think Gates might be the best candidate to start opposite Bess -- what his speed does for the rest of the offense.
He absolutely should make the team as he has the potential to be a special WR. It would be nice to see him make plays during the regular season this year. He should play with the 1st team next week.
also a poor reflection on Tannehill to a degree. As that's one of the things he has to work, manipulating the safeties. That's the one thing this season I am anxious to see him progress on.
I think Volin is underestimating the role of Ryan Tannehill's eyes on the play. Everyone is watching the quarterback on the play, including the corners. The reason Moore has Weems beat so soundly is because Tannehill never looks over at him. What Tannehill could have done was eventually click off Gates and decide he's not open, then come back to the right to see if Moore was open. He would have been, by a country mile, because Tannehill had been staring at Gates the whole time. However, a couple of points to raise: A) There is such thing as a pass rush, and to do that would have cost a lot of time, and if he gets sacked then suddenly the pundits are talking about how Tannehill needed to "pull the trigger" and not hold the ball so much. B) Even strong armed quarterbacks have maximum functional range, and Marlon Moore would have been so far down the field by the time Tannehill clicked over to him that there would have been no way he could hit Moore in stride. It would have been an underthrow that Moore would have had to come back to, and that would have given Weems (and the safety) a chance to catch up. It's just one of those misleading things.
we can bet our asses that the coaches have noticed this and will be fighting to keep Gates on the team. Appreciate the effort CK.
It's just a still picture for me, but if it's the play where gates catch was called out of bounds, that was a nice catch, he displayed some serious athleticism there..he lacks strength, but to feature Bess, we need him.
I dunno...but...really...it seems like Bess, Gates, Moore, and Hartline when he is back.....really might be an under rated WR unit. Right now...Im much more depressed with the play of our TE's......
That is the best we can hope for I guess. You may as well include Naanee, for some reason unknown to modern man, he is considered a lock to make the roster.
Another case for Gates (who I want to make the team) is just the abysmal play of the other receivers.
Thanks CK. I was hoping to see Gates show some ability as he did on the the sideline pass. I think his game should be modeled on Santana Moss, who used his speed to get DBs to transition to a full sprint, then displayed unbelievable ability to quickly stop, turn, and leap for a reception. Moss was a much more dynamic player with his open field running making him consistent scorer; however, lost in his stats is iirc a number of times he helped average QB get to midfield from poor field position. Perhaps, DBs are more susceptible in this scenario as no one wants to give up a 80+ reception and Tannehill will trust Gates leaping ability to make a play.
I could be wrong but I think Paul was talking about the 1st play, which was THill. Both Gates and Moore got excellent depth on there routes. Slide 3 has them both at about the 23 yard line and if Thill looked right he would have seen a more advantageous matchup.
He does have exceptional leaping ability and control.?.jaw dropping moments at his combine..he elevates in practice as well.I just think there are strength and size issues holding him back some, and as a staff, you have to know what your willing to give up, for speed.
**** dude, I appreciate the effort but just make seperate images next time...or at this point, a goddam powerpoint would have been easier to read But seriously, good observations. I think Gates is a must keep at this point - he has the tools to be something absurd, and given all the other dogphallus on the roster, we may as well keep him around and give him the chance.
Had to laugh a bit, Gates looked good v Atlanta, then promptly dropped 3 passes in the next practice. To me, I'd go with the guy who has tools, like Gates/Fuller, at least if they pan out you have a weapon, when the season starts staffs are tempted to play the solid Wr without the upside..nature of the beast.
