Yes. We were able to find a CB in free agency that is arguably better than Davis.

No, we have nothing for depth now. You need 4 or 5 good defensive backs (safeties included) in this league. We have 2.

I would be happy to get a player like Vontae Davis in the second round. So trading him for a second rounder right before the season starts doesn't make any sense.

Trading him is fine. Getting a 2nd and a late round pick is not. If you're rebuilding a team you keep your better players or trade them for more than what you paid. Otherwise every single season will be a rebuild...

No, I don't mind the trading of Vontae but we need to get more in return. Our Defense has enough holes we don't need more.

    Totally.

We are a bad team with or without Vontae. Marshall is MORE than an adequate replacement. Getting a 2nd rounder from a team (Colts) who are not winning more than 6 games is a great deal. We are building ammunition for the 2013 draft and/or giving us the assets to make a trade for the biggest need on the club, receiver.

We have to give to get, this is a very smart football move in my opinion.

Should be near the start of the second round so I'm fine. Would have liked to see if we could have gotten more, but it is what it is. It gives us maneuverability to possibly move back into the first next year as well.

I'm cool with it. It will be a high second rounder. Vontae got lazy when the heat was turned up on him. Plenty of depth with Nolan Carroll.
This team will not stand for players who loaf.

horrible move imo....don't see how getting rid of our best cb for a second rd pick is to our benefit. SS sucks *** and Marshall hasn't been very impressive to me thus far. Vontae might have been a little down the past year but the dude is a freakishly good player that will always be a top 10 cb in the NFL. Just my opinion but I'm not on board with this trade at all. Another Daniel Thomas or Jonathan Martin is not going to be more valuable than Vontae....this trade sucks

No. Personally, I didn't see Davis as a mistake pick. He's a young, solid corner back. Who was also on a good contract.

Yes. Considering how bad our offense will be with these receivers in a passing league, this team isn't going anywhere anyway.

This 2nd rounder should give us three picks in the top 40-45 and 5 in the top 80ish next season

I dont like it.... Our safties are terrible. We need all the help from CB's that we can get in the nickle. I felt like we had one of the better groups of CB's in the league.

He was a 1st round pick that had improved and was on the way up, need a change in work ethic in the offseason. We got a 2nd for it.

Hopefully the colts suck this year and we get a high second round pick that we can get some playmakers with. This team just hasn't had playmakers in forever.

Vontae is 24 and still on his rookie contract! He is our best player in the secondary, the only guy proven to make plays. This makes no sense to me unless we move that trade now for a receiver.

Im truly scratching my head. Because he was out of shape? Are they trying to prove something? Ill try to remain calm until this all pans out.

Trading away your nickel corner for a possibly high 2nd round pick. Vontae didn't play up to his 1st round pick and Sean Smith is taking the role of the Alpha DB. I'm all for it, trading Vontae while his value is still relatively high.

This. Again, we get less than we paid. That's how we continue to get worse and not better. And Vontae, while problematic, had talent, more than most of the guys on the team. It took his brother, Vernon, a few years to mature, but San Fran sticking with him paid off. The Dolphins are not improving by giving away one of our most talented players for a pick that has been pretty much a crapshoot in Jeff Ireland's hands. For both this year and the future, since Vontae is still young, I would have rather stuck with Vontae and hoped he matured than getting only a second round pick. And we can guess that it will be a high second rounder, but it still a guess. I wouldn't be surprised if Indy ended in the middle of the pack.

no. we just made our team worse, ruined our depth and havent addressed our wr problem. if we turn that pick or another in another trade for a wr this year i might change my mind but even then we hurt our defense. i dont see the point in hurting us now with the hope of getting better in the future. jeff ireland must go!!!!!

    Yes.

Marshall has out played Davis this year, and you saw the first hard knocks, Davis was not on board with the program. Philbin is showing the team that you either get on board or your gone, and I like that.

Some people were so sure we weren't rebuilding ... the problem is those players to be acquired have to be better than what you gave up , any confidence in that?

Marshall played awful against the Falcons. I stated on a thread yesterday that I would have no problem with trading Davis, if the Dolphins could get a first round pick for him. A second round selection is not enough. Especially for the Dolphins ,who have been terrible selecting in the second round since Ireland came here five years ago.

Maybe the new GM next year will be more effective selecting players in the second round.

I imagine its simple; if you still believe we can make some waiver wire pickups or trade for a WR and this will be enough to vault us into playoff contention, then its understandable that you will be disappointed with the trade. If however, you think the reality is that we're simply at least a year away from any meaningful contention, then getting what could be an early second rounder for an underachieving player with concentration issues is probably going to make you happy.

I'm in the latter group, I accept as this poll shows I'm in the minority.

I completely disagree with those that say Marshall is better than Davis. Marshall got burned almost every play against Atlanta, he couldn't keep up with Julio. When Vontae was on him, he was covered. Marshall was also missing tackles.

We pretty much traded Vontae for one of the following players: Pat White, Chad Henne, and even Jon Martin. I hope Ireland isn't around to use this pick.

I bet the 2nd is already earmarked for a trade with a team for a WIde Receiver NOW. I assume that deal was already agreed upon in principle, but Ireland wanted to get a 2nd.

In which case it's a good move.

It also solidifies team culture and expectations of focus, professionalism, hard work and consistency.

If we hang onto the pick all year while missing Vontae it's a stupid deal.

I don't think so B , I think this is sold to everyone ( Ross , coaches , players , fans ) that we will do this right , it will be painful but the right way and the results will prove it was the correct approach.

The problem is we have had this scenario multiple times and I have no confidence in selecting the right players or getting productive FA's in here this time ...

If this organization had shown that they could pick a player in the second round who can actually be a solid player in the NFL, I would agree with you. Since 2008, the Dolphins have drafted, Chad Henne, Pat White, Sean Smith, Koa Misi, Daniel Thomas, and Johnathan Martin, in the second round.

I don't see any of these players being a starter on the better teams in the NFL. The best player out of this entire group in probably Smith and he is merely a starter for the Dolphins because their secondary is one of the worst secondaries in the entire NFL.
