This I disagree with D22, ANY player will show improvement if given opportunities, the real key is which one shows the most improvement with the highest upside physically?
Substantive. Minute improvement has no real impact on the team or on the win/loss record. Counting on substantive improvement from veteran/older players that haven't done that isn't prudent imo. It MAY happen , but to bank on it? Sounds like a reason to realistically end the season with yet again many question marks.
The harm is that you have to cut a guy who may be doing more for you in two years, when you're contending, than Jabbar Gaffney can do for you this year, when you're not. Now, as to your point about Tannehill's needs, I agree. Hartline needs to come back healthy, or else I do think we should be in the market for a solid veteran.
Considering we are worse with him, imagine how bad we would be WITH Brandon Marshall. Tannehill wouldn't stand a chance with that guy as a target. Sent from my iPhone
yeah but do u honestly think anyone besides bess and hartline has a chance to still be on this team when we address the wr problem next off season? i don't, therfore i think the development of our no name wrs is a mute point.
i dont know this for a fact, and if i was on a computer rather than a cell phone i would research it, but i dont think any of our wrs contracts put us in a position to keep any of our problematic wrs. it will be easy to cut bait after we get new wrs next off season.
But if you're not contending, there's no reason to rid yourself of guys who have a chance to develop. In fact it's stupid IMO to be rebuilding and to rid yourself of guys who have any chance whatsoever of developing and being contributors when you're ready to contend. Now, the point about Tannehill's needs is well-taken, and that's why I say the happy medium is to have guys who are capable and reliable in spots one through three, the guys who are going to be on the field the most. In spots four through six, on a rebuilding team, you should have developmental players IMO.
the only reason we wouldnt contend is because of our wrs. we have a solid run defense, good lbs, one great pass rusher-wish we had more. we have a problem at safety, once vontae wins his job back and sean smith continues to step it up i will be at peace with our pass protection, but our defense will keep us in games. our oline has little kinks that will be worked out. we have 2 good rbs, tannehill can move the ball well when he isnt plagued by dropped passes. any problems we have at certain positions will hopefully be solved by development. thats just not the case with our wrs.
Oh lord. No wonder we're disagreeing. I'm sorry to say I don't think we're anywhere near contending with this team. We may be lucky to win three games, and if we had the best receivers in the league, I still don't think we'd reach .500.
A receiver I wish we could make room for is Baltimore's Deonte Thompson. Holy cow can he fly. I seriously believe he might have better football speed than Ginn. His 63 yard KO return vs Jax looked like he was running on a moving walkway.
ive always been an optimist. but i actually think there is good reason to be an optimist this year if we can pick up a vet wr and hartline gets healthy. why not? did u see how many of those dropped passes hit our wrs in their hands? u know the outcome of that game would be much different if we had decent wrs! we were losing in the at the end of the half and we only had 9 less yards then the falcons at the end of the half. our starting defense without 2 of our starting lbs held them to 3 field goals. we had the offense to win but didnt have the wrs to get the job done.
yes. by no means am i saying we are good everywhere else, but development and coaching will take us a long way at other positions but u cant coach wrs to catch balls that hit their hands.
GBN has a running list of cuts for those who want to keep track: http://www.gbnreport.com/cutdownday.htm
With our stable of WRs in the shape that it's in, I believe it is time to place a phone call to one, Juan Huron...
If we got Gaffney, he and Bess would start. Hartline and Gates would be the 3 and 4. I'd not stop with just signing him if we can though. I'd still trade for James Jones. If you want to accelerate the development of our rookie QB, then you give him some viable, proven NFL quality WRs to throw to. Gaffney can give us 50-70 catches and 700-900 yards. How could anyone be averse to getting him if he becomes available is totally beyond my ability to comprehend.
Yup. I agree. Is we can sign Gaffney, and also trade a 3 or 4 for James Jones, it would aid Ryan immensely. That would give us a WR corps of Bess, Gaffney, Jones, Hartline, Gates and Matthews. I'd be pretty pleased with that sextet.
That woman is beautiful. Seriously, sexy. Dolphins officially have the most beautiful cheerleaders in the NFL just because of her. Wow.
Donte Stallworth, Dion Branch, Jabbar Gaffney What do you guys think? Even Welker is on the waiver wire. Should we make a move? They have been successful. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/08/27/pats-part-ways-with-donte-stallworth/
Gaffney or Branch would be very intriguing. Stallworth's best days are definately behind him...but that said, he'd been an upgrade to our WR corps(e). I suspect Brady would pitch a fit if they cut Branch. Branch is one of his favorites.
If Brian Hartline is going on IR then I would consider Gaffney. But only in that scenario. What you have to realize is that the Dolphins have already 98% made their bed where it concerns the wide receivers. The likelihood of a magic bullet appearing on the cut list is pretty low. So you might as well give the opportunity to young guys that could make something of themselves...guys like Clyde Gates, Rishard Matthews and Chris Hogan. It's already going to be ****ty. That's the realization. No matter what you do it's going to be ****ty out there. So you might as well be hitting two birds with one stone. Deion Branch would be interesting to me. Donte Stallworth is not.
Didn't ready the whole thread... Anyone mention Marvin McNutt? Eagles aren't expected to keep him on their 53. Former Iowa product. Which is big considering our connections to Iowa (our WR coach was their OC last several years).
We had the chance to draft him in the 6th, when we took BJ Cunningham, and some folks surmised that our choosing BJ over McNutt was due to O'Keefe's recommendation. Either way, at the time apparently Ireland had BJ rated higher than McNutt. That may have changed since the draft though.
At this point the team really can't be choosey at least looking at these guys. The made their bed with CJ and pasiing on BE.
I don't think they are really going to be looking so much at cuts to fix the problem as they are trades. Of the players released, I'm not sure any of them besides Gaffney are really worthwhile.
