    Great point, shou.

Have not had a chance to sift through the rants (we are currently going through Hurricane Isaac right now, which is not Katrina, but we have had some flooding and power outages), but do you think this trade will get some of these players on board?

I know things like this will take time for the players to digest, but from the little I have read, the players seemed to have taken note. What is interesting is how the PR folks of the Dolphins are handling this. It looks a little frayed on their ends, like the coaching staff and FO do not quite have a handle on this yet.

I do not see an all-out mutiny because these players, in the end, will probably handle themselves professionally, but it will be interesting over the next few weeks how this all plays out. If the players buy into the system, then I think we will see it out on the field. It may not necessarily translate to wins, but we might see some good solid football. If they do not, there is always Hard Knocks.....

I totally agree. The thing of it is, no matter how much they want to pretend any different, no one here knows what the other players personally thought of Vontae as a teammate.

He never pulled the trigger. Ain't you seen the movie? Travis turned out a hero for rescuing the Steensma's daughter from the clutches of the evil pimp Sporty.

I remember a lot of guys on here talking about how Marshall was a distraction in the locker room and how CJ was a distraction in the locker room and how that makes it where the other players cant play their best, so they had to go. Its funny though. You never heard any players complaining about either guy, ever. But it sure seems like they are distracted now after this front office/coach got rid of those players. Philbin/Ireland are losing this team, jist like Cam did. These players want to win and they see good players getting cut/traded that weaken the team and they are pissed.

Things will get worse before they get better it seems.

If we can get Dansby off the books for a mid rounder you gotta do it, absurd contract...average play....vocal distraction...he must go one way or another.

Bush to Lions would make a lot of sense considering he is a FA, get some picks dump some contracts and hire a competent GM. In a nutshell that needs to happen.

Those two have had similar battles before. Whenever we've played Carolina the past 3 seasons, there has been extra tension between Smith and Davis. Smith intimidates some players and they back down from him. Vontae doesn't back down, and as for whether he should have just let Smith push him around and not resist, it's easy for anyone just observing to say. Maybe not so easy as you make it out to be when in the heat of battle.

The penalty could have easily gone the other way. Would a Carolina fan say Smith should have backed down, had the call been made on him?

You have a link to support that statement? The fact of the matter is very few players openly voiced their feelings on the matter either way. So, for you to say that "publicly, all players backed the deal", is a fallacy, unless you can offer some evidence to support this claim.

Let's look at the facts and likely inferences:
    1. Vontae's not been a prize pupil lately dating back to showing up drunk.
    2. He was demoted
    3. Sean Smith is in a contract year [1 year ahead of Vontae], and Smith seems to be getting his stuff together, so he gets the nod for being re-signed first.
    4. $16.0M is invested in Richard Marshall.
    5. When we likely re-sign SS for probably $24.0M+, that put's he and Marshall at $40ish million.
    6. $40ish million is a decent bit to have tied up in the corner position, making it unlikely & unwise to add another expensive FA corner to the mix.
    7. It's arguable that he's yet to display an improvement in his maturity since his rookie year, so it can't be assumed that he will any time soon, if ever.
    8. Vontae has yet to perform to his potential, and it seems more b/c he's not trying hard enough rather than simply not being capable.
    9. A 2nd & 6th rounder are on the table (which are extremely hard to ignore regardless of most of the above).
    10. The team has a bigger need at WR than CB; so Vontae's 2nd round value could be better used elsewhere.
    11. Philbin is trying to establish a better team culture

I cant see having Vontae for 2 more years as being enough to trump the above list.

In all my years as a Phins fan I've neer seen fans ready to shutter up a season in week four of the preseason before.

Not singling you out. A lot of us feel similarly. It says a lot about our lack of faith in management.

I wouldn't let Vonte go for the way he went back at Smith, its not like he fights every WR, I doubt the coaches held it against him either.

If I am a GM, the one and only thing I'd know for sure at this point in time, is my roster is weaker heading into this season, without him, unless another trade is made to acquire a player of similar talent at a position of need.
As for this thing of him showing up drunk, hungover or whatever, or out of shape, I don't know that either one was proven beyond a reasonable doubt, and when he walks onto the field, he was our best corner, from the day he arrived until the day he was traded. Yes he may have said he was getting gassed in early workouts, but as long as he's ready to go 100% in week 1, that is all that matters IMO.

More comments from General Manager Karlos Dansby. Shocking. As if Vontae Davis was the key to the team being good this season.

It's hard to see what with all the bodies flying around, but #21 was in on that play too. At the bottom of the pile with his arms around the runner's legs. He comes flying in from inside out and goes low just as the collision is being made. It appeared to me that Davis would have stopped him 1 on 1 had he been alone on that play. Even so, it was good to see Smith willing to mix it up better in run support than what I recall from years past.

We all didn't wake up one morning feeling this way, it has been pounded into our craniums from years of disappointment and frustration. Things have been terrible for Dolphins fans save one fluke season. And now?? We can't even maintain an erection for FINALLY finding a potential franchise QB because he has thee WORST team in football around him. I count 3 impact players on this team ( Bush, Wake, Long) other than that it's a group of "meh's".

People have been given ample reason to want to throw up in their mouth the past 30 days over this football team, on and off the field.

Believe me, Iam the ultimate HOMER...but this team has even me awaiting the 2013 NFL Draft.

Smith caught 7 for 87 and a TD last time.
Yes, he should resist. There's no time that a cornerback should be fearing for his life during these confrontations to where he has to fight back and risk a 15 yard penalty. All that's doing is putting himself before his team.

Just b/c a player doesn't engage Smith it doesn't mean he's necessarily "backing down". You could have one corner resist to engage Smith in a tail between his legs manner leaving Smith thinking, "This guy's mine!"..... or you could have a corner not engage Smith in a calm & confident manner leaving Smith thinking, "Damn, I'm doing all I can to get this guy off his game and he won't budge!" which will do more to get in Smith's head than if the corner engaged him.
Vontae doesn't seem like he's strong enough mentally & emotionally to ignore Smith's antics and not let it show it's getting to him.

Isn't that how fights go, that with all things equal the guy who can remain the most calm and focused is more likely to win?

but the difference is Smith is acting rather than reacting. He's creating a controlled conflict to get in a player's head, rile him up, and get them prone to mental errors.

    Shaddup. :tongue2:

4 years in the regard that this is his 4th training camp & preseason, which counts as time, especially regarding evaluation b/c the time between the end of year 3 until now was plenty of time to dedicate himself and flip that switch on just as Sean Smith did during the same timeframe.
That was plenty of time to erase the "I showed up drunk/hungover to practice" label, but I honestly don't see that he made a dent in that.

**BTW, the Chiefs game Vontae was suspended from, Miami won 31-3, and Cassel had a 71.8 QBR.... and through 3.5 quarters & before going into prevent mode with a 4 TD lead, Cassel's stats were 13/26, 164 yards, 70 QBR.

So essentially we got rid of Vontae for one game but it didn't seem to destroy the morale of the team nor damage our chance of winning. Benching him possibly sent a message to the team since we won 3 straight after the 0-7 start, so perhaps trading him will send another one.

    This news isn't shocking.

First, these guys play to win the next game, not to be a dynasty. We could have gotten two 1st round picks for Vontae and they would have been "disappointed." No player wants to lose a fellow starting player. I'm pretty sure they'd all be on board, jumping for joy, if we traded every pick in 2013 for Dwayne Bowe. Would it help them win games? Absolutely. Would it also be a terrible idea? Absolutely.

But that's the business, boys. The 2012 Dolphins play for the 2012 Dolphins. The 2012 Dolphins management acts in the interest of the 2012-2014 Dolphins.

Second of all, I really couldn't care less what an NFL football player thinks of an investment. I mean, SRSLY? I'm pretty sure I could convince half of them to invest their life savings in my factory that makes miniature factories. I don't think "long-term investment" rings any bells there.

Third, I'd bet you $100 that next offseason we have a bunch of excitement from the vets that there's a bunch of high-quality young blood on the team and we have an "infusion of youth" and blah blah blah. It's just how the game goes.

We aren't that bad guys....seriously aside from WR, which IS glaring I admit, we don't have THAT MANY holes. I maintain that our offensive line is going to be just fine. They are switching systems, probably installing new line calls, new blocking scheme and probably more. The talent is there and I believe they began to gel more last preseason game. I expect it to continue at a nice pace and be just fine by week one.

We are fine at RB. Fine at TE and have our future QB (hopefully).

On defense not that much has changed from last season. Honestly in the NFL today I'd rather have 3-4 solid corners than one "elite" corner because the rules are so far tilted towards the offense that unless you are an all time great your impact is limited. I don't think losing Vontae is going to hurt as badly as some seem to think. Our safety position will be no worse than last season IMO. It was time for Bell to go and our play against the pass from those spots can really only improve. I also have no qualms with our LB unit or defensive line. They may not be the best corps in the league at their respective positions but we could be doing far worse on those fronts.

People need to just relax and let the season play out.

Even with the Davis trade, we are still weaker now at WR than at DB. IMO, unless this motley crew of WRs gets an infusion of talent to help out Bess, it will be the Achilles' Heel that makes an otherwise .500 team into a .250 team this season.

I can agree that it's a massively glaring hole. I just don't get why people are freaking out like it's going to take the next fifteen years to rebuild what we have. We actually have a pretty damn solid foundation. We just need those couple missing ingredients, namely a WR. You could also point to overall depth as an issue, but at the actual core this team doesn't worry me.

I myself could care less if Vontae was mature or not. Part that bothers me is it did in fact affect his performance on the field. Deion might have been hated, but he was the best CB off all time. The guy brought it when he stepped on the field, something Vontae slacked off on. I would put up with stuff if Vontae covered like Deion.

And it's another to watch it happen to a guy that in many ways still has the maturity of a child, especially when he seemed like he had no idea it was coming. He looked like he'd just been punched by Mike Tyson. Ireland starts with "the rumors are true", and you could almost hear Vontae thinking "what rumors?"

yeah, that's what I said, similarly. It's like you almost wanted to reach your arm through the TV to put on his shoulder and comfort him, then hold his hand till he got to the car. Then from there it's like, "Do I let him go on his own, and does he know where to go or what to do" as if he's a 6 year old being dropped off at the airport for his first solo flight.
You feel bad, at least I do, b/c you can see that he seems like such a great guy with a big heart. Almost got teary eyed when he wanted to call grandma. You know he just wanted to hear her comfort him like a mom does her kid after getting dumped by his first true girlfriend.

Even though he's in Indy, I hope he grows up and becomes a true star in the league.
