Not so much because of the fact that he didn't know them, but moreso because he said he really wasn't that much of an NFL fan growing up. Would be nice to think he knew the history, who the greats are/were, etc etc.

Not that there's anything wrong with it. Is just nice to see guys come up making a dream come true - playing in the same league as their heroes. Kinda like big Ben said about Marino (or was it Elway?). Wouldn't think that somebody who wasn't really a fan of the league had any heroes there, or dreamed of playing in the NFL like most all of us did at some point as kids.

Ah well...just being a lil' mushy I guess. As long as the guy helps us win that's all that matters...

It's actually pretty common that elite athletes growing up don't really have much time to focus on anything else like following pro sports. I had a few friends that went pro in baseball etc. and they are too driven on what they have to do to get better rather than follow what divisions football teams play in.

I loved playing sports as a kid... hated following college/professional sports. Couldn't sit still long enough to watch an entire game. Would rather be outside playing the sport than watching it.

It wasn't until I got to college and wasn't playing sports anymore that I really started following them...

Can't blame him. He still hasn't switched from Tecmo Super Bowl to Madden yet. The divisions are different.

If Tannehill can play, we'll forget about this real quick.

If he can't, it will be something held over his head by fans for the rest of his days as a Dolphin.

Yeah nothing wrong with it. It won't make a difference in his play. I guess it shows that disconnect between the world of the player and of the fan and why many players don't seem to understand fans. The game they play and the game we watch are not the same.

It does seem odd though. It's like you work your whole life to be an investment banker, yet aren't sure where Wall Street is.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I played the hell out of some sports as a kid through high school, but also followed my dolphins and other pro teams/sports. If I couldn't be outside playing I was watching.

How is this a surprise when we see pro bowl voting every year?

I'd bet some would be surprised that players are not always fans of football, for them it is just a job.

Actually, they have plenty of time to do a ton of other things (that's why so many elite athletes get in trouble). But, it is true that there are a lot of athletes who play their sport and yet, don't really follow their sport.

That said, you are entering the NFL and you have zero clue about what teams are in what division?

It's one thing if its a D-lineman. It is another thing if its a QB who should know much more about the league. Tannehill doesn't strike me as a cerebral student of the game. Not like a Brady or Manning. Yet, if he really wants to succeed he is going to have to become that. He seems much more like a college QB who is just on the field making plays. He should know all the QBs and teams and how they play and what their skill sets are and what he can learn from them.

I don't get that , he's a coach's kid , football smart and smart overall and it sure seemed like Gruden thought so too. Right now his focus in his team , his preparation , this off season he can start his football phd prep work.

I thought tannehill was smart but apparently hes as clueless as it gets. How can you possibly think that Kansas City is an eastern team!? how can you say that miami doesnt belong in the AFC East!? I think the first place anyone thinks of when you say "east coast" is Miami if not New York. This guys lacks serious knowledge in geography and its pretty common sense. On the bright side, this has nothing to do with being a good qb but it makes me think what other common sense knowledge does he lack?

Ive been following the NFL for 15 years.

Off memory, I know all teams but I cannot place them all in each division.

I know the AFC East - Dolphins, Patriots, Jets, Bills

I know some of the NFC East - Cowboys, Giants, Eagles? That it.

Don't ask me any more than that. I know which teams are in which conference, but DIVISIONS? Why is not knowing where the Bengals are at a sin? I don't give a F about the Bengals and I don't watch their games unless it's a playoff game and it's the most interesting game on or I am at home on a Sunday and the Dolphins game is not on.

Why would anyone care if you know where all teams are in each division? Waste of brain space.

way to overreact and maybe you should rethink the common sense. my interpretation when he was referring to Miami was that he probably thought Miami should be in the AFC south. you know, when he said "we're on the bottom of the map"? and my guess is he probably knows where Kansas City is. He did play against Kansas state in Big 12. Manhattan is fairly close to Kansas City.

i think a lot start as fans of the game...and it becomes a job.

It would be nice to see him, as a QB, know the history, what made the league what it is, etc etc. If for nothing else, to have seen and appreciated how the "Brady's" and "Mannings" approach the game...knowing what it will take if he is to become an elite quarterback (obviously that excludes a LOT of history but those are the two that come to mind first as far as work ethic and how seriously they take their craft).

    Maybe he will.

No, the Chiefs are playing in a West division while Dallas is playing in the NFC East!
I understand it has a lot to do with the history of the game, but knowledge in geography and common sense doesn't help at all while figuring out the divisions.

i think he grew up in Texas where high school and college football are huge... i am an avid fan of the NBA, know every team and most players on every team, yet have no clue about the divisions or how they even are named actually in basketball...

i think hardcore NFL fans know the divisions moreso now due to the way the schedules work, but i would have had a bigger problem with it if he didn't even know the teams in the league... he knows that, but not the divisions...

lol@someone saying hes an idiot for saying Chiefs in the NFC East, would it have made him smarter if he said AFC West and got it right based on where KC is??

Same. I will say divisions are way less important in the NBA than the NFL though.

Dangit, Arsenal, I was going to make this point. Texas is its own football nation, so I'm not surprised at this. And remember, the kid apparently hit the mid 30s in his Wonderlic, so he's far from an idiot.

This is what I was thinking. Listen, I'm a Tannehill fan so far. Love the pick, love the kid.

But I didn't like what I saw in that scene.

I'm just speculating here, but I'd venture to guess that Brady, Brees, Manning, Manning, all knew the opposing teams and their respective divisions 5 months after being drafted. I'd even guess those guys knew a lot of the marquee players and defenders on opposing teams. I could certainly be wrong.

But I want my QB to know the competition. To know specific defensive players' tendencies. Specific D-coordinator tendencies and schemes. It's too early to panic on that, of course. But that still doesn't stop me from not liking what I saw. Let's hope he's willing to work at and gain that knowledge over the years.
