I just checked some of our previous records and found out that we have not won a playoff game since the 1999 NFL season. Yes, that is correct, we have not won a single Playoff game since the turn of the century. In the 12 years since 1999, we have made the Playoffs only 3 times losing handily all 3 times. Year after year, coach after coach, front office after front office we were promised a better future, a rebuilding project, the making of a team that no one wanted to play. As I sit here wondering why I feel so apathetic about this upcoming season I realize most Dolphins fans feel the same way and it shows in our home game attendance. We have been made promise after promise after promise and it hasn't gotten the least bit better. We have all waited this long and it appears that we are starting to "rebuild" all over again. Am I writing this because I am upset at Jeff Ireland or Joe Philbin? When I first reflected on this I thought to myself no way; I actually think Ireland has done a pretty decent job in the draft and FA and Philbin hasn't even coached a single regular season game. All the being said, as I think deeper about this question I am upset. The team has looked horrible in preseason. There has been no fire, no excitement in our players. Everyone looks to be half assing it and we just seem so, so devoid of talent it isn't even funny. The loan bright spot on our team is a rookie QB that is most likely going to have shoddy protection and WRs that cannot separate or make plays (or catch for that matter). I will love the Dolphins until the day I die, but man I sure could use some hope for the future.
Suck it up cupcake. You act like you're the only one who's been getting kicked in the nuts for all these years
The year 2000 was the last year of the previous century. Anyway, there's absolutely some hope; his name is Ryan Tannehill.
No according to the NFL... They called this last season the 2011 Season, thus the game could have been played in 2000, yet it was the 1999 Season.
Really you are going to haggle that? I think the Bills haven't made the playoffs since 1999. Was the Music City Miracle their last playoff game? Thought I would add since you are looking stuff up.
Been a long time. I'm seriously jaded to the Dolphins at this point. Even though I think this is probably Irelands best draft yet, it's tough to root for what mediocrity we'll be seeing this season. It's almost like we've turned into the old Lions. I like what I've seen from Philbin, now if Ireland can totally get his head out of his *** then we might field a contender. Here's hoping Ireland turns into Polian. *chugs 6 more beers*
No, it was the 2000 season. Jay Feidler QB. Superbowl in Jan 2001 Dan Marino was QB in the 1999 season.
Nope, unless someone can splain to me why the draft means so much, but player development, and the losses that come with it, are seen apathetically.
The website I looked at was a year off then unless it counted this past season as the 2012 season, while everyone else logically called it the 2011 season. Either way it has been long as hell.
I would agree with that, but then again you have to take into account the fact that we just traded a player that we were developing in Vontae Davis. I don't know why I am feeling so down on the team right now. I wasn't even a huge Vontae fan to be honest. I liked him, but he wasn't the greatest in my eyes. I think I am just starting to get upset by how badly we have looked in these preseason games. Coupled with the fact that I see a bit of Cam Cameron in Philbin. He can't seem to win over the players and be a players coach, yet he can't motivate the team or scare the team (as a whole) and it has shown in our lack of passion in the games. A thing that bugged me about Hard Knocks was when Philbin yells at a defense back something along the lines of, "Hey, ___ what kind of man coverage was that?" The player responds with, "That was a F*$& push off Coach!" Philbin replies, "Watch the F word. I'll be the one saying the F word around here." as he awkwardly walks away. That just plan weird. I don't see him being a successful coach to be honest.
Well put. I was 10 when we won that game against the Colts in the playoffs. That was also my first Dolphins game I ever attended. Feels like an eternity ago.
MY dad was 8 when we won a superbowl in '73. And I was negative 2 when we lost to the 49ers. I have never even seen this team play IN a superbowl, let alone win one.....been a rough 25 years (minus marino, and our awesome defense in the late 90s)
The question gets tougher to answer....will we have to replace most of the players, because the ones that are on it, do not want to play for this coach?, and does this coach, when he does get his kind of players, have what it takes, to inspire a team to come together and play with emotion.. That was an ugly *** preseason.. I just hope this fanbase doesn't show it's *** to much, where it can't recover...they have the potential to show their *** real good, but, I can't say I blame all, it's Been real bad for a while. "it's gonna take special players to play in this town, and in that stadium."
Nope. It was after the 2000 season. Wanny was the coach. We beat Indy and ran Lamar Smith so much he was never the same again after that.
I became a fan on December 15 or something, 2007, when the Dolphins won against the Ravens. No lie. Still young in football.
Thanks for making me think about this one. I was in my 20's with an infant. I'm now in my 40's with a teenager and then some. ****. Now I'm depressed.
The remedy to all this apathy and depression is to go to Deadspin.com and read the "Why your team sucks" column. Ours is one of the better ones. With really funny fan statements: http://deadspin.com/5936988/why-your-team-sucks-2012-miami-dolphins?tag=Why-Your-Team-Sucks-2012
I was 7 years old the last time the Dolphins won a Superbowl. I was 18 when they last appeared in one. I was 34 when they last won a playoff game. I will be 46 next month and I have a son about to be 16 who's a sophomore in High School. Yeah, it's been a while and I share your apathy. I find it hard to even care that it's football season because there has been no hope for my team the last few years. I used to record every single Dolphin game on DVDs. I haven't done that since 2007.
The OP has Matt Barkley in his Avatar and has openly said in the past he wants Tannehill to bust. Memo to the OP: there is no need to start a thread on this topic. It screams "look at me, I'm tired of the team being poor and I count the most". We are all suffering, no need to start a thread.
What really got to me was the last Hard Knocks and watching Philbin walk by two Flags for being Conference Champions (1982, 1984). 1984 was the last conference championship! 28 years. I remember when Green Bay went to the SB in 1996 - it seemed like an eternity since their glory days of the 60's and it was the same distance. Felt the same way with the Bears in 1985 - it seemed like they had been just mired in mediocrity for an eternity - yet it had only been 22 years since their last title (1963). So, too, the '86 Giants - who were at least in the '63 title game (23 years since a title game). And, to think of titles, it has now been 39 years. I know there are teams that have never won. But, when it comes to making the SB - even the Cardinals have made it since Miami was there (and should have won that SB were it not for a crazy end of half run on the INT - ridiculous play). Only the Jets surpass us (going back to '68) for haplessness in terms of titles; the Bills do also but they at least had a great run in the 90's of making the SB.
Last night my wife asked if there was a second team that wins more that I could root for so this losing feeling didn't bring me down. I told her I wish I loved an NFC team too, but haven't been able to feel the same about anyone but the Phins. I think the years of negative feelings have made me attached like in battered-wife syndrome.
I'm pretty sure I watched those games on my old C Band or Ku Band Satellite Dish, but I cannot remember how the team looked in preseason. That would have been Louis Oliver and Sammie Smith's rookie seasons.
Find one post were I say I want Tannehill to bust... I've never said such a thing. I had this avatar since the declaration process when most people thought Barkley was going to declare. I have been too lazy to change it though. Tannehill has actually been one of the bright spots on this team offensively.
