I would rather go with a proven player who has had success in this league than wait for a guy who may never develop and might never make it in the NFL.
That said I wouldn't give up no more than a 4th.

i think we have to send a message to our vets that we are not tanking the season, show them we want to put a winning team on the field, if its a 3rd or 4th round pick for james jones...so be it

I've been against James Jones in the past, but I think if they can swing a 3rd round pick you do it.

He's got a high amount of drops, but he also caught a nice % of passes last year. That seems contradictory, but if a guy is catching 70.4% of his passes with a fairly vertical route tree I think you can live with drops. It's higher that most players are going to have in the same situations.

As for him being a #3 WR...That means one thing with the Packers, and another thing elsewhere. He's not a #3 on most teams. A guy who is putting up his numbers while playing about 50% of offensive snaps is generally speaking going to get promoted higher than that.

A 2nd round pick would be way too high. But given Ireland's history with 2nd round picks, at least we would be getting some value with the pick.

Jones doesn't appear to be playing in tonight's game. That is note worthy. Gurley is playing well.

GreenBay is the total opposite of Miami in terms of their receiver corp. They have 3 or 4 kids who will not make this roster that could be on another team.

Nothing special, but worth a look for a mid round pick. He certainly won't help our drops problem, but may score some much needed TD's.

Jones maybe the 3rd WR in GB, but in Miami he'd be 1a with Bess. I like him. He's strong, has good speed, excellent YAC ability. He doesn't go down from a gust of wind or a tall blade of grass like Hartline seems prone to do. I've been wanting us to get him for the past two months. As far as I'm concerned he is better than Hartline, so if he makes the latter the #3, that is a pretty solid top of the order for the WR corps. Round out the corps with Matthews, Moore and Gates, and we should be in pretty good shape.

Brief appearance is a lot more than not playing at all.

Man. It’s been brutal. Bess, Matthews, Moore and Gates (in that order) have been the only guys on the team that have looked like football players during the preseason. It would be nice to add Jones and Hartline to that mix.

Dude, I'm watching this Green Bay and KC game. I am very excited, because anyone of the 3 (Gurley, Boykin, Borrel) they cut is going to be an upgrade...I like them all. They have to cut someone lol :knucks:

IMO, the best way to compare drops is pct of drops to targets.
In 2011 Jones dropped 11.1%, while Hartline dropped 10.6%
In 2010 Jones dropped 7%, while Hartline dropped 5.8%
That's so close that it is really splitting hairs to say Hartline has noticeably better hands. Also Jones is stronger and more physical and gives you far better YAC ability. People mention all the time how Hartline seems to go down so easily.
2011 YAC avg for Jones was 7.7 yds per catch. In 2010, it was 6.2 per catch.
2011 YAC avg for Hartline was 2.7 per catch, and in 2010, it was 5.0 per catch.
2011, Jones had 6 broken or avoided tackles on 38 catches. In 2010, he had 9 on 50 catches
2011, Hartline had 0 broken or avoided tackles on 35 catches. In 2010, he had 3 on 43 catches.

Not sure if you're even serious but shorter strides are better in a WR anyway.

In a couple of other threads, I listed all the WRs drafted in the 3rd round from 2006-12. To me it indicates no better than a 50% success rate, depending on how you measure success. The only really great one out of those years and rounds was Wallace. So to me, I'd rather take a sure thing by trading even a 3 if necessary for Jones, than flipping a coin for a WR on draft day. Also, you get the use of the resource one season sooner, which aids in accelerating the development of your rookie QB. Getting Jones now, even for a 3, is doing Tanne a large favor.

And they're not going to accept anything lower than a 3rd IMO. Jones was drafted in the 3rd, and he's playing at least that well.
