Many want to replace Ireland. LOL. those that do had better add another 4-5 years on anything that looks good then. A new GM, regardless of the team brings in his own people, coaches included. Ireland may not be, in some opinion, the best around but he sure in hell is better then a lot of them out there.

The Rams tried that, brought in Bill Devaney. He was worshipped as fans were sick of John Shaw who had been the GM since God made dirt. Devaney fired just about everyone, hired his own guys and the Rams sucked worse. Not saying this would be good or bad but am saying there is no guarantee the next guy is going to be any better. If you thought there was roster turnover now. LOL, a new GM would hire his own coach after making things miserable for Philbin for one year and the new coach would bring in his people who in turn would tear the team apart.

This is nto a bad football team. Most on here that complain haven't a clue of anything other then banging on the keyboard for anything less then a Super Bowl. Ireland has made some misses but he has some big hits too. We get some recievers and make this lazy asss piss poor pass defense wake up and this is a decent football team. Some will never accept that. For those that will not remember, Dan Marinos do not come around often and for the teams that do get that type is fact they really luck out in doing so.

Look at the Colts, with Manning, great team, great Oline, great receivers. Without Manning ? with the SAME players, Oline sucks, receivers suck, running backs suck, offense sucks.

Then a turn of events of Biblical proportion, the Colts have the first pick of the draft and there is an Andrew Luck there for them. Unreal, thats luck, not a front office that planned things well. Like I said, this is not a bad football team. From reading posts here for years I have come to realize half the people here never even attended a game. Unreal.

Good or bad, you have to be a fan for your team. Changing GMs is no different then drafting players, there is no guarantee a new GM will be better then Ireland. I like the guy just for the fact he has been around the game since he was 12 years old. I say keep him and ride out the storm.

If teams fired head coaches or GMs that fans hated there would be a lot of HOF coaches that never got a chance. Vince Lombardi being one of them. Bellichek another. You have to ride out the storm people and cheer for your team.

Thats why I get arrogant a lot. Many here have no other life then to just bang on the keys and cry like babys. When in event a lot do not even watch the games for whatever reason and GOD forbid they actually go to one. Win or lose, going to a Dolphins game is a lot of fun. Many here should actually try it and PLEASE, do not give me the mamby pamby BS you cannot afford it. All I have to say to that is if you are a fan then find a phukin way to afford it or stop crying on the board like friggin babys. End of story.

So you are saying that the vast majority of the callers in Miami who complain about Ireland don't have a clue. Does that mean that all the people on here who support Ireland are the only people who have a right to an opinion or who actually have a clue.

I think the fans who call in to the radio stations are very aware of the fact that the Dolphins have continued to decline every year since 2008. They are also aware that the one person who is still with the team and making player personnel decisions after these last five years is, Ireland.

I am willing to see how this year turns out, but based on my expectations at this time, I am just not that optimistic in regards to the coming season. Ireland and the Dolphins have the entire season to show all of us who don't think Ireland is the right GM for this team, we are wrong.

You are right, I give Ireland much of the blame for the players selected while he was the GM and Parcells was still with the team. He was the named GM during this time and he was paid to be the GM. I believe he had more input into the players drafted and signed during the time Parcells was here than you do. Can I prove this. No I can't. No more than you or anyone else on here can prove that Parcells had all the say so on the players picked in the draft and signed in free agency and Ireland was just his' "do boy".

I will agree that in 10 days we can finally start truly judging the Dolphins once they begin play in the regular season. Everything else said on this forum since last season ended, by me or anyone else on this forum are merely opinions and they will mean absolutely nothing once the season begins. So it is about time to tee it up for real, and see if the Dolphins are as inept as they appeared in the preseason or ready to take a giant step forward and finally start showing that they are not the rebuilding team many of us think they are.

I went to the Dolphin home games and over 30 away games over a thirty year period. This included going to every single home game the season they went 1-15. I spent over $150,000 purchasing season tickets and traveling to various games around the country and to the game the Dolphins played in London, England. So while you might call be a cry baby for being so negative at this time in regards to the play of the Dolphins over the last three years. I could care less how you feel about those of us who are not happy with the Dolphin organization at this time.

I feel I have supported this team for years and I have spent my hard earned money during this time to attend hundreds of games. I expect more from this organization and I am not happy with what I see right now. After you have spent as much money supporting this team as I have over the years, you can judge me all you want. Until then, if calling me and others who complain about the state of the team, "cry babies", makes you feel like a real man or woman. Good for you.

Do I like Ireland? Yes. The guy has been around great football players, knows the game, and seems to really work his butt off as a GM, husband, and father. Talking shop in the Vontae trade while having his children in the room epitomizes this guy's mentality about football. Football IS his life. A "blockbuster" trade, and he had his head around it, all while his children were playing in the background.

Here is my problem with Jeff Ireland: he's a *****cat. While I think his is a solid talent evaluator, some of the development (or lack, thereof) of these players does ultimately lie in the hands of the coaching staff (as one poster intimated). He is a coach's GM. As you saw, he collaborated with Philbin on the Vontae trade (as he probably should). But when the rubber meets the road, I am going out on a limb and saying he may take too much into account a coach's evaluation of a particular player and how that player might fit into the 'scheme' rather than going with his gut on these decisions. We drafted a left tackle #1 overall for Christ's sake! I love Jake Long, but (and this is not a hindsight thing) we should have gone elsewhere. I wonder if Jeffy thinks the same? Instead, he went with the staff's choice. Please, let's not go down that road. I only use it as an example. And this might actually be his demise. He 'chose' Jake Long because Parcells and Sparano wanted Jake Long. Not that Jake Long was the wrong choice, but it may not have been the choice he (as GM) would have taken if he had not owed Parcells a big one for bringing him on board that year. Not blaming Ireland, because he was GM merely more so in title than in capacity that year. Think about it, one of your buddies/mentors helps you out with the opportunity of a lifetime. You are going to take his advice, especially while green.

There are prominent former and current GMs who are on Ireland's side. I suspect they do know a little more about this subject than we. While Jerry Jones is the GM of the Cowboys, Ireland played a big role in landing guys like Jason Witten as the national college scout. And while he did have a little faux pas with the Dez Bryant thing (which I think is overblown), I am ECSTATIC we did not go down that road, because it would have been the Miami Dolphins who would have gotten pimped.

In the end, I think he may have gotten a lucky break with the Tannehill signing. I honestly do not see greatness in Tannehill, but I do see a good starting NFL QB, and it is not because of the lack of talent surrounding him. Great players make the team better, especially at the QB position. I just do not see that in him. Granted, talent helps significantly, and if brought in, Tannehill (and Jeffy) should benefit.

I do not think Ireland is without his flaws, but I think he may be a casualty of timing and situation. From all accounts, the guy is scrambling. He is hauling in picks, bringing in players left and right for workouts, trying to make trades (as Section126 put it, Jeremy Maclin earlier in the offseason). I think he has a sense he might be on the chopping block.

My heart would say this team should stay the course with Ireland for at least another draft, but sentiment does not put food on the table or butts in the seats. I feel bad for him because the Garrard injury put a wrench in the plans for the team. I would have preferred to have Tannehill sit for the majority of the season. I have a feeling Ireland and Philbin would have preferred the same.

What am I lying about? I stated I am not optimistic about this season. Yet if the Dolphins prove me wrong and they have a winning season, I have no problem with Ireland remaining as the GM beyond this season.

I guess you just like making comments which make absolutely no sense at all. I have observed several of these type comments from you since I have been posting on this forum. You are just being childish as far as I am concerned, but what else would I expect from you.

I think that's his strength, actually.

IMO the GM's job is to evaluate talent in terms of what the coaching staff needs. If the coaching staff runs schemes that need receivers who run crisp, accurate routes, for example, IMO the GM's job is to find the best players who fit that bill.

Then what makes one GM better than another is his ability to do a better job of finding that talent, the talent that fits the schemes of his coaching staff.

Now, if the GM believes some schemes and the types of players that go along with them are better than others, then he should hire coaches who run those schemes. But once those coaches are in place, the GM needs to find the players who fit the schemes IMO, and yield to the coaches as to what kinds of players those are.

Yeah well, let's see how good they do when their job is on the line.

I suspect it's a little easier to be making all these roster moves and draft choices from the comfort of one's computer keyboard. Jeff Ireland on the other hand is making trades with the kids he feeds in the same room.

first off just because we bring in a new GM doesn't mean he'll want to replace the head coach, Bears hired Phil Emery and he didn't fire Lovie Smith. When Holmgren and Tom Heckert took over the Browns a couple years ago, they didn't fire Eric Mangini, they gave him a chance to show that he could improve the team (he didn't, so he was fired.) and if we bring in a guy from the Packer front office, there's a good chance Philbin stays anyway, if that's what you want. dont forget, the owner has a lot to say in this too.

secondly a new GM doesn't mean we'll continue to suck, Thomas Dimitroff took over the Falcons in 08 and immediately turned them into a contender. John Schneider joined Seattle and they made the playoffs right away. hell you act like we didn't go 11-5 Parcells and Ireland's first year here.

I think if this year ends with Ryan Tannehill looking like a franchise QB, Stephen Ross will be smart enough to realize that Jeff Ireland will have accomplished the one thing more than any other that makes the team likely to be successful, and that putting the pieces in place around Tannehill is just a matter of time.

I wrote about this in another thread. Tannehill IMO essentially buys both Ireland and Philbin three years if he plays as well this year as he projects to.

Wait till next year when we have a franchise QB who isn't a rookie anymore, and a ton of draft choices and free agent money to spend on putting players around him. You won't want to tinker with that situation IMO.

Sometimes you just have to be patient and let some positive momentum get going here.

Totally depends on how Tannehill looks IMO.

Ireland drafted Tannehill. If Tannehill looks like a franchise QB, that'll be a feather in Ireland's cap no matter what the team's record, and I think Ross will view that as having laid a sufficient foundation for a winner to give Ireland the time to assemble the additional pieces.

I agree. If he looks as good as Newton/Dalton did last season numbers wise, I think Ireland stays despite a 6-10 finish.

If Tannehill plays that well and we win like two games? He's probably gone.

A solid year from Tannehill would probably be enough for Ross to keep Ireland for at least one more year, regardless of team record, too bad he surrounded Tannehill with garbage which will surely hinder his development. also, do we really need to give Ireland that much credit for drafting the kid? we desperately needed a franchise QB, he has size, athleticism and mobility and all the physical tools, the next best QB was too old to consider using a top 10 pick on, his college coach was our OC...i mean it was an obvious fit.

lol yea well sorry if I dont have faith in Mr. Ireland to surround Tannehill with the right pieces.

Well would you blame Ireland if Tannehill didn't pan out?

If you would, I think you have to give him the credit if he does.

It may have been the obvious choice, but in the end the guy's job is still riding on it, and he made the pick. You can't put him in this pickle where he gets no credit for picks that are successful, despite the fact that his job is riding on them, and all the blame for the picks that aren't successful.

Depends if you feel Ireland is better than anyone else you could hire , will he , would he make this team better than another option.

Tanneyhill should not give him any free passes regardless how well he plays imo . This team is a reflection of Ireland , and how we have played , the record we have had and the depth of talent and the number of above average players and playmakers are all primarily on him imo.

    Don't wash away the sins.

I think we all can agree that, while Ireland might have had some input, the ultimate choice of coaches hired while he has been GM have been on Ross and Parcells.

I said the same thing, and agree with you when it comes to a GM finding players to fit scheme. This is absolutely what (from my understanding) a GM should do. In most cases, the GM has "final say" on players. I am not so sure Ireland has had that. I just think that (on some picks, not all), he might have not gone with his gut (scheme or not) despite thinking one player is better than another though, going with the coach's pick.

Can we agree that, ultimately, Philbin was Ross' choice? If so, wouldn't it be prudent (and for his job's sake) to go along and take into account Philbin's input and evaluation of these players with regard to scheme. Sometimes, players fit into scheme. Other times, schemes change because of players. I think that it is very real that Ireland might not be on staff next year. Philbin will get a pass if some of these players do not pan out for a couple of years or three.

For example, when Bill Walsh was asked the difference between Marino and Montana, Walsh said that Montana was great because of the system. His thoughts on Marino: "He was a system".

My point is, sometimes you take chances on players regardless of scheme. GMs obviously take a chance with every pick, but sometimes, regardless of scheme or system, the better player (for the team) should be taken. I know that drafting is not a science by any means, and we could go on and on. I agree with you, shou. GMs should work within the confines of scheme, staff, etc.

I think he has been given the keys to the car, but can only drive it to school, work, and football practice, but he cannot take it out with his friends to smoke pot in the driveway at that big party at Sally's house (I am not advocating partying at Sally's house. She's a snobby *****, anyway).

In other words, he hasn't had that chance to grow up. I think he has made some safe picks, but the picks that are more in tune with scheme and coaches rather than with his gut. I may be way off base with my assessment of how he chooses players, but it just seems that way.

*Just a note: Rick Speilman (who many considered unworthy of the job while in Miami) took an Adrian Peterson in '07 when Minnesota invested $14 million in Chester Taylor just a year before. This is even after Peterson's durability was in question. Of course, he hit a homerun, and Peterson was worthy of probably a top-5 pick that year. But my point is, I think that was a gut pick. And Speilman has gotten a butt-load of playmakers on that squad making some pretty tough deals, including bringing in Jared Allen.

of course I'll give him credit if Tannehill plays well, but if we win 4-5 games despite a pretty good season from Tannehill, that probably means that the talent Ireland put around the kid failed him. in this era no more does having a rookie QB mean your team has to suck, if he's the real deal and you surround him with a good cast you can win plenty of games and make the playoffs.

I'm not dismissing the chance of a good season because our QB is a raw, inexperienced rookie, I'm dismissing it because the overall talent around him is BAD.

Well I think if there was any likelihood of his being fired for all that, he would've already been fired.

They aren't going to give him one more year, let him draft a quarterback, and then fire him if the rookie quarterback looks good, just because the team as a whole doesn't do well enough. That doesn't make any sense IMO.

If you're going to keep a GM around, let him draft a quarterback, and let the rookie quarterback start, you have to let the GM see the process through if the quarterback looks good IMO. Otherwise just can him beforehand.

Now you can think he should have been canned beforehand, but that's not what happened, so I think we have to deal with the reality of this as it is.

A rookie Peyton Manning had a 71 QB rating for the 3-13 Indianapolis Colts in 1998.

The next year his QB rating was 91 and their record was 13-3.

My point: you won't be able to tease apart the contribution of Tannehill from the contribution of the rest of the team.

I agree it probably won't happen , but as I said I don't think it shouldn't happen if Tanneyhill stars ( and obviously I hope that does ) if another option will get you better . You don't have to keep a GM around who hasn't done as well as he should imo .

You owe him no loyalty , you shouldn't keep him if another option gets you to a better level , you do owe that to your players and to your fans , and Ross I truly believes wants to win. So while the reality is it may not happen , it could , and of course just my opinion , it should.

    But here's the deal:

Ireland has to somehow try to assemble a team that fits the current staff's needs with the old regime's players. It's wife swap in the flesh, except you have 80 children and have to kill off 20 or so of them to keep that swapped wife happy.

    I do not envy him.

Do you still suffer from that, at your age? Oh well, I hope your wife is understanding.

I don't disagree with that , but Ireland didn't assemble a team that successfully fit the old staff ... and he really has no excuse for that does he? So we will trust him the second full go round then? He won't be fired in season , so how well the entire draft class , free agent class , and subsequent acquisitions play AND produce this year should be a major factor in deciding if he stays or goes .

Ireland is beyond bad he continues to set this franchise back with his ineptness on draft day.
