I think in today's NFL you should be able to tell if a QB is a keeper after his rookie season.

Blaine Gabbert looked like crap last year. Many thought he was the worst or among the 3 worst starting Qb in the NFL. This preseason and game 1 he looks completely different.

    I still think he sucks.

ETA: if Tannehill plays that bad this season, then Ireland should be terminated.

lol. You really think there's no talent on this team?

How did we win 6 games last season?

I'll give Ireland this, the man knows kickers. I dare ANYONE to find me a better evaluator of kickers in the NFL. Seriously. Dan Carpenter was an awesome signing. No way that was Parcells either. I don't care that Ireland wasn't really the GM then, that was all him.

Who's talking about last season? I said this roster.

But yeah, I guess talent is relative. Like, is this team more talented than Arizona?

EDIT: And LOL at the "IT TAKES TALENT TO WIN 6 GAMES." I literally laughed out loud.

Finley was a much more developed TE coming out, and he wasn't plug and play for the Packers. I certainly would have been surprised to see Egnew step in seamlessly at the NFL level and do much more. He was not my first choice for that pick because I didn't see him as an immediate contributor. I would have taken Mohamed Sanu if Jeff would have phoned me up and asked for my input. ;) We shall see which is the better player.

Even after he cut his flowing locks and stopped going for the surfer boy look? It must be some superficial reason to think that because he appears to be making nice progress on the field early in only his 2nd season.

It takes some talent...you can't win 6 games without some talent. I mean do you think we have less talent than the 2 win Colts? This is your argument. You are the one saying we have no talent. Explain how a team wins 6 whole games with no talent. I challenge you to make sense.

I dont think Tannehill will play that poorly but I dont think he nor really any of the rookie QB's will go all Cam Newton on us where they account for like 35TDs (though RG3 is certainly off to a nice start). My point was though that while you may not be sold on Gabbert becoming a good QB, he also looks nothing like he did as recently as the end of last year. What if that same situation arises with Tannehill? What if the guy plays poorly this year, we attribute it to a learning curve and doing what many rookie QB's do (lay a giant goose egg in year 1) and we really dont know what we have? I dont think even in an era where there is more responsibility put on the QB as a rookie you can be so quick to make that determination. The Chargers tried to go that route and ended up with 2 excellent QB's at one point and they didnt do it after 1 year they did it after 3 and still didnt know that they had an elite QB right under their nose. There were whispers in NY during Eli's 3rd year that they didnt think he had it, that he wasnt a chip off the old Manning block....How would that have worked out? We cant be so quick with Qb's. Other positions, Im more likely to be quick trigger on...

I hear you. It's a good point. Like I said, I'm not gonna bury the guy and I'd certainly never call anyone a bust one week into the season. Maybe it was just optimism on my part that he could impress the coaches in camp and show some flashes that could get him in for Week 1. Don't even get me started on WR's I wish the Dolphins would've drafted.

I already mentioned that Miller and Egnew can't get on the field so we can start with TE and RB. Center, LT, DE, DT, LB, CB. Punter and kicker too IMO.

If you'd like me to rephrase to say that the Dolphins "have very little talent" or "not enough talent to be relevant" I can.

I was scratching my head all draft long trying to figure out when we were gonna go WR.

On Egnew, I'm not sure he knows the playbook. Not to the point where the coaches feel comfortable putting him on the field.

Can you change it to Dolphins "have no playmakers, especially at WR"? We're league average or better at every other position on the field IMO. And we did win 6 games last year, while blowing 4th quarter leads in 5 others.

So you would have taken a WR who is as far down the Cincy depth chart as Egnew is for us and who had 4 plays of over 20 yards out of 120 college catches? :(

I think i would have stayed with Egnew, gone for Lamar Miller early or if I knew the Vontae trade was coming picked Jamell Flemming.

That's a start. I would then ask you how you're sure you can say very little talent. I mean what is your measuring stick? 53 super talented guys? Is it by our record? Voodoo and chicken bones?

Other than Sean Smith, we're thin at CB. The secondary is...the secondary.

In a passing league, we're thin at WR and DB. Agreed about the Punter and Kicker. Both awesome, as is special teams in general.

Using that logic would cause many teams to make shortsighted decisions regarding QBs.

Considering who is ahead of him, that's not really a knock on Sanu. I was also talking about draft day. I also think Sanu would be higher on our WR depth chart than he is on Cincy's, and he looked pretty good in preseason. We shall see how they turn out, but right now I'd guess Sanu will have a better career. I'm not flawless though. I know you hate him as a player, so I doubt we'll agree any time soon about him.

The game is much different now than it was when Brees, Eli, Brady, etc. were rookies. The schemes are much more similar to what these guys have had in college.

How does a team with no talent hold 11 4th quarter leads in 16 games, in the first place?

The only unit on the entire team that I would classify as talented is the defensive line.

Why do people keep citing last year's team?

There is no debate last year's roster was more talented than this year's.

I saw Sean Smith play OK aside from one play where Andre Johnson did what AJ does, but overall the rest of the unit was not impressive. This team is gonna have trouble against the pass all year IMO. I can't remember the last time anyone in the secondary made a play. Now, part of that could be because aside from Cam Wake, there's almost no one getting pressure.

Marshall had a really good pass defensed on Johnson. Beat him at the top of the route.

I was actually impressed by our CBs, Smith especially, on how they were able to win at the top of routes. Smith has really improved in that area over last year.

Regardless Gabbert was a rookie last year. If Tannehill looks that bad, you said you would fire JI. What if Ji is right about him after the fact? Tannehill has the same offense as what he used in college. If he has a bad year 1 you dumping him and trading up for Barkley?

Marshall wasn't that impressive to me. I'd have to watch it again, but aside from that one pass breakup as you mentioned, nothing stood out. I agree on Smith. He did look solid last week.
