Passed away at 69 from complication from a Brain Tumor. The best in the Business You will be missed http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000063643/article/steve-sabol-founder-of-nfl-films-dies
I always have loved NFL Films. NFL Yearbook was one of my favorite shows to watch growing up. I was always amazed how they could take the worst teams and make them look hopeful.
Wow. I didn't even know he was sick. He was such a legend and I loved his work in the NFL. R.I.P. Steve.
I loved this guy(and his dad's) product more than cartoons growing up as a kid. Gentleman, scholar...damn shame.
If the NFL had a single recognizable voice, its now silent. To me, he was our preeminant, chief historian who's departure leaves the league, and all within it sorely diminished.
Sad. Loved him and what he stood for. He will be sorely missed by all fans, and the sport itself diminished a bit with his passing.
All you can ask for in your life is to be remembered fondly when you pass...Steve Sabol is one of those guys...RIP
He and his dad, Ed, are arguably the most important reasons the NFL is the most popular sport in America today. Their work completely shaped my childhood in the 60's and 70's. Though we really don't know celebrities, their work and his face make it feel like a family friend has died. So very sad for the entire NFL. I am deeply saddened.
Terrible news. I grew up watching anything I could from NFL Films. It's as if a part of my childhood is gone. RIP
Well said everyone, sad indeed. He did a ton for the game. Time to dig out my football follies vhs tapes.
Here's a nice montage Jason Lisk put together at the Big Lead: http://www.thebiglead.com/index.php/2012/09/18/a-lifetime-of-nfl-stories-steve-sabol-and-nfl-films-highlights/comment-page-1/#comment-1766278
I'm not sure that anyone that grew up in the ESPN era (I can actually remember life before a 24/7 sports news cycle) can really understand how big a deal these films, shows were to fans of the NFL. I couldn't wait to see these films whenever they were on TV it gave me an appreciation for the older players and the teams I never got to see play. Great narration, great film, wonderful voicing, they were just amazing to watch. Steve and his father were pioneers and essentially inspired anyone that is in sports TV from any sport. RIP.
