To have the blackout lifted, the Dolphins need to sell only 51,000 seats to each home game. Not the 74,000 you infers. If the Dolphins had to sell 74,000 seats to lift the blackout, I would agree with you. That is not the case and it is pretty sad that only 48,000 tickets have been sold so far for a game against the Jets. If this was the Rams, or some other team of no locale interest, I could understand the lack of fan interest in attending the game. This game is against the JETS, therefore there is really no excuse for the fact that less then 50,000 fans have purchased tickets so far. Perhaps if this game is blacked out, more fans will have an interest in attending home games the rest of the season.

    There is an excuse.

Ireland. the reason 8 tickets were not sold this weekend (at least) that I know of. When that clown is gone I'll spend my money.

I got a call from the Phins today and was told the lowest priced lower bowl seats were $85 a ticket.. I don't get it, how do you have crappy lower bowl seats for $85 (end zone, upper rows) when the rest of the stadium is empty? You would think they would adapt on the fly and sell below list price if attendance was that pathetic

Now that I've seen this post I'm going to JRS with cash on hand and will pick up tickets cheap from a scalper.

What if the Dolphins make the playoffs this year and Ireland is retained. Will you continue to boycott this exciting young team, QB and coach because of some irrational hatred towards a GM?

The Miami Heat are taking the casual fans wallet.

Remember, most of miami lives somewhere near the poverty line. Miami has, for about 20 years, been among the cities with the worst poverty rates in the country. Combine this with Miami's long history of average median income also being among the lowest of any city in the United States. Then add on to that, some of the country's highest residential costs and the bad economy........and it shows you that the Dolphins have to compete with the Marlins, and now the champion Miami Heat, with a limited amount of people who are sports fans with disposable income.

I wouldn't be so quick to bash the fans for not caring. Blame the economy.

JW, I like you man, but some of the things in your post strike me as a contradiction, I can only speak for myself, but my
debate with you in the past was because I thought you were only punishing the coaches and players and culture by boycotting The team and not purchasing tickets, here you are now telling me that, Your going because you want to support the players and coaches, well, they didn't deserve people abandoning their support back then, and they obviously are going to suffer because of that mentality in terms of energy and bad publicity about their fanbase now, which will continue to make them feel like they have nothing really to play for except for themselves.

IMO, every team, every year, if they play hard, deserve our support, their our team, and if we can't support them, then an owner should find a city that will.

Well chucks... Basically stating that most of the fans attending the game will be the die hard fan...

Too many years of going to the games...Normally most of those fans buying the season ticks are between 40-50 thousand fans a year... Then you have the fans that buy the games when they are winning, an extra 10-20 thousand... then you have the opponents fans to add to that...

I believe CK and Section can come to agree with some of this...

I don't want to come across as judgemental, I'm merely saying that ur team is playing for first place this week, yet people are holding on to the past, these folks who purposely don't go because they think they understand the dynamics of a front office, are only making it more difficult for this years team to win.

Energy inside a stadium and being able to play the game for more reasons than just yourself is highly motivating.

Instead of complaining about attendance, why don't y'all actually go to the game?

I make it a point to attend any Dolphins game I can. I went last week. Had a great time. Unfortunately, my financial situation likely won't allow me to attend anymore games this year. There are bills to be paid, and in this economy I am thankful for the paycheck I get at the end of the week.

Check the Chargers and Raiders. Every team that has sucked for years has trouble filling seats. It does not help that the stadium is way too big to begin with. But when the Dolphins field good teams the stadium sells out. Even when mediocre they sold out for years.

So is getting paid, and playing because you love to play. The team is going to HAVE to be first because the fans are sick of hype!

Lower bowl is cheaper than a good seat at a hockey game here. I'd be there every damn week if I did not live on the other side of the damn continent.

I think it's pretty sad that we can't get 70,000 into that place. I think the building is an issue though.

    ### The Dolphins, who had an embarrassing 13.5 Dade/Broward TV rating for the Houston opener, posted a 16.8 rating for Sunday's game against Oakland on CBS-4, second worst among all home markets for the home team in Week 2. It ranked ahead of only the 16.6 in New York for Jets/Steelers. That means 16.8 percent of all Dade/Broward homes with TV sets were tuned in."

    I'm worried....that y'all don't get it.

I really feel its just about winning consistently. Its tough for any team (especially in Florida with many transplant fans) to maintain attendance of 65,000-75,000 when you have one playoff appearance in 10 years, and just one playoff win since the 90s. And the fans need some hope that a solid team is being built, which most fans are skeptical of, and you can't blame them based on the teams history in the 2000s. You look at the surprise 2005 season, then the pickup of Culpepper (When people thought he was going to be back to what he was) led to record season ticket numbers in 2006. Even though there were always big crowds at that time anyway, fans were buying tickets well before the season because of the hype.

So If they somehow manage 8-8 or 9-7, with Tannehill being consistent, it will probably improve in 2013. They may also need to add a free agent WR or someone in the secondary to excite fans (and re-sign Bush).

And the Dolphins do have a lot of fans from around the country thanks to their past success. I'm betting there are many who used to travel down for some games that no longer do that unless they know they're seeing a good team. Its probably not a huge number, but add that to the local fans who aren't bothering to go and it adds up.

Deej its just too damn expensive right now. Cheap lower bowl seats are $80+. That's not including $20+ for parking. That's already $100+ without concessions and gas. People will pay that when we are winning, but in a down economy...that money can be better spent or saved.

It may be worrisome if people are just losing interest. I would assume that a lot of people are apathetic, but that for those on the fence rule in favor of the game in HD in air conditioning as opposed to paying good money to sit in an oven. I get all that. But if they aren't watching on TV, that is a concern. However, Pitt is a crazy football town with high fan interest, a good team for a long time. What's the reason for that, then?

f*&k the people that do not show up. The Oakland game was a blast. Anyone that missed it missed a fun day. Been to Houston, last week, will be there this week and next week in AZ.

I know Ross would love a full house but beginning to realize the players could give two shats if its sold out or not. May not have been sold out for Oakland but the place was loud.

And even more people would be willing to spend if they did not suck for so long. A losing season here and there is something a fan will deal with a lot better than a team that is continuing to spiral downward season after season.

Funny thing is, despite the stadium being only like 75% full last week I thought it looked pretty packed on TV and it sounded pretty loud at times.

This kind of shocks me though. This is a rivalry game against our bitter foes who have their own share of fans in South Florida. We just came off a blow out win too. I'm very surprised so many tickets are still available. Gotta keep winning if we want to sell more tickets.

I got this from a guy named IdFin..

"There is also something to be said for the "Pygmillian effect" this whole type of thing causes. The pygmillian effect says that when you have people behind you, that believe in you (like your team, believing in each other that they will win and be 1-0) statistics have shown people perform better in these types on environments. The pygmillian effect is very very real. Believe in your Dolphins team. It helps. Thats one thing that drives me crazy when I hear coaches get on their players. Reinforce postives, squash negatives, but dont squash the player. Kind of like sherman saying "If i was GM i would cut you right now". Egnew knows he is not going to be cut (being a 3rd round pick) all this does is give him the feeling that he is not going to be able to perform as they expect him and may never be able to. This may be the case, but you dont want a player (or anyone your teaching!) to feel that way. Now had he said "I know you are better then this, I expect more from you". hey there is that pygmillian effect again."
