When will we ever have LB's that can cover someone? This has been going on for way too long! I think we need to use one of our 2nd round picks on a decent LB that can cover a TE! If you want a link, read my sig! LOL. I read this on Twitter from Omar.
Both Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett are generally pretty good in coverage. It's also ignoring that a lot of it came from poor tackling on plays that the defender was in reasonable position on- The long Goodson play and when Burnett was stiff-armed.
I have no idea what the average % is but a lot of QB's have that or a little more on an entire defense for a game. For that much yards to be on just our LB's is humiliating! I don't know how true it is, but I would think Omar did his homework before tweeting that. If its true it makes me sick. I don't even want to think about how much damage Dustin Keller will do on us!
A few years back I recall seeing the passes completed numbers for Patrick Willis. He was easily considered the best coverage LB yet he still allowed more than half of the passes against him to be completed. (I believe it was 56%). The top 10 or so coverage LBs allowed around 70% or so against them. I don't recall the yards. Looking at this last game, the only blatant error I recall is that one screen where Dansby and I believe Clemons took bad angles. I would imagine that if you avoided that kind of big yardage error our defensive stats would compare favorably.
I think it's because of the time missed in pre-season by both Dansby and Burnett who are our best coverage LB's. They started slow last year with the shortened off-season too.
I am enjoying life without fantasy football this year! The only thing I regret is not having a reason to watch other games.
Kelly almost certainly didn't do any homework besides the briefest assessment of PFF, and I don't think Dustin Keller is going to do a lot of damage from the sidelines. He hasn't practiced this week.
Amen. I quit FF and I enjoy the games for the games, not for which random WR or RB did that day. When I would get mad at a RB getting taken out in a blowout I realized there was something wrong
I have nothing personal vs Omar but he clearly doesn't know wtf he is talking about. Our GAMEPLAN called for shutting down the run (at the expense of allowing the short to intermediate pass game). The Raiders either anticipated this or felt they couldn't run on us b/c they never even tried to establish their best player. They used a ton of play action and yeah the completed some passes underneath the coverage. But outside of one play they never came close to actually scoring a TD. I'd say the game plan worked pretty well. It's pretty frustrating when our guys do their jobs, execute the plan well, and yet some clueless reporter is out there sounding off like they are scrubs. FYI Keller has a bad hammy and might not even play this week.
good point. I'll take the win! lol. But it would be nice to have the first attempted tackle be an actual tackle. Instead of 217 it could be more like 150 with the same well executed game plan.
I suspect this issue is similar to the one where you don't want your defensive backs making all the tackles on your team, because it signifies the other team's running game is getting out past the second level on a regular basis. Notice the Raiders scored only 13 points. Had the majority of those passing yards come against the DBs and not the linebackers, I suspect they would've scored more points. In other words, giving up passing yardage from the linebacker position rather than the defensive backfield probably signifies some element of stopping the deep passing game and keeping the other team from getting huge plays and mounting quick, frequent scoring drives. When you're facing Darrius Heyward-Bey and Denarius Moore, I'll take that.
Yeah I think we were playing more of a bend don't break defense hoping our pass rush would be able to make some plays and our run defense would hold. We stuffed McFadden, held their WRs in check and kept them out of the end zone for the most part. Sure I would liked to have seen some better coverage from our Lbs but our defense is playing well for the most part IMO.
