Used to be a time, when playing in Miami was a complete pain in the arse for opposing teams. If only the crowd could sound like this on Sunday....
Well, what you have there was perhaps THE most anticipated game in the history of the franchise. Bears coming in undefeated, flirting with an undefeated season and threatening the Dolphins' historic achievement. Dolphins underdogs at home on Monday night, with the entire country watching on TV (MNF). I made poster board signs and hung them in my room before that game. When Nat Moore scored that first TD, I ran around my house screaming and yelling. There were people who thought we wouldn't SCORE on the Bears in that game. We can do this again, but we need this kind of excitement about the franchise.
I don't think it can be like the Orange Bowl because of the design of the stadium and the materials used in its construction, but here's a playoff game at JRS in 1994. Notice the size of the crowd and the noise: That's plenty loud by NFL standards IMO.
That was the 1st Dolphins game I ever attended. I had just moved from CT and wasn't even a Dolphins fan yet but was still screaming at the top of my lungs. The OB was literally swaying. What a great experience.
Wouldn't happen in today's NFL, the refs allowing the Bears that much time was over the top. But now they have the silent snap count That must have been the radio call because ABC called MNF back then and I don't think that was Frank Gifford.
Will never forget that game as long as I live - was amazing watching the crowd from up here in NY on TV. One of my life's biggest regrets is I was too young, and my family didn't have the means at the time for a trip down to the Orange Bowl. Been to the new place now a couple times, but it's obviously nothing like the OB. If I could go back in time, there would be two places to stop for me - the OB, and Ebbets Field. I envy the folks here that got to enjoy that! The closest I ever got was a flyover into the airport one time. God it was so loud on TV, especially during the Marino years, or even big Canes games. Can't imagine what it was like to experience the place boiling w/ sound, and literally rocking.
Related, if you ever need to explain Dan Marino to young folks - this clip was Marino in a nut shell.
That is BS. I was at a Canes- FSU game a few years ago in JRS and the place was loud as hell with only 55-60K fans in the stands. Let's stop blaming the stadium and start blaming the fans and the general sense of apathy around this team.
JRS can be loud for sure, but it has been the team's crappy play of late that has put us fans in a bit of an induced coma. Need something to awaken the fans once again, and it'll be loud, just like in that Marino clip.
You have no idea how jealous that makes me. As a Mets fan, I was in the stands for Johan's no-hitter this year (first in team's 50-year history), and that is something I'll never forget. I only go to 2-3 games a year too. But this '85 Dolphins-Bears game, how lucky are you!!
Its really not BS. Take that same crowd you are talking about and now move 15 yards closer to the field (On both sides) now put metal seats and floors under then so when they stomped their feet it echoed loudly throughout the entire stadium, Remove the concrete that helps absorb sound, now get all 60K fans stomping their feet. Its defining. now matter how loud you think a crowd is at JRS its 3x to 4x louder at the OB.
If you at JRS for the Baltimore game, when they had Marino's retirement ceremony, you'd know that place can be effing deafening.
I live a couple miles from JRS I know it can get loud. BUT take that same crowd and put them in the OB it its 3x to 4x louder.
Seattles relevant and publicized 12th man is directly related to the construction of the stadium, real tough ticket to get, hmmmm, wonder why..lotta extra cash comin in because of it.
I was at that Miami night game against the Bears. It was so loud that I couldn't hear what the persons next to me was saying when they were merely a few inches from me. I also remember that I was so hoarse after the game, I couldn't speak out loud for two or three days after the game. The one other thing I remember about the game was that there were several Bear fans sitting in the row directly in front of me. Before the game, they were telling all the Dolphins fans in the area that the Bears were going to destroy the Dolphins that night. They told us how great the Bears were and that they were going to knock Marino out of the game. These fans continued to to berate the Dolphins and the fans as the Dolphins continued to score repeatedly in the first half. The best sight of the entire night was these fans leaving the game in the fourth quarter, when they realized that their Bears were going down to defeat. Of course they continued to state that the Dolphins were lucky to win and that the Bears would destroy the Dolphins if the two teams played again. Since that was a great Bears team and that was the only game the Bears lost that season. Those Bear fans may have been correct that if the two teams met again that season, the Bears would have probably won. On that night though, as the Bear fans continued to berate the Dolphin fans as they left the stadium, all the fans in our section merely pointed to the scoreboard and told the fans to have a great flight back to Chicago. It was priceless.
I remember the signs...like...Will the Dolphins win on Monday Night...Does a Bear **** in the woods?... While...Ill agree JRS doesnt have the same sound properties of the Orange Bowl....I also believe the fans could make it....significantly louder if they wanted to. But the organization needs to .....build some kind of .....bad ***....kind of identity. Yes I know...winning has its ways....but...I can guarantee you...if I was put in charge...I would have fans salivating.....
what miami fans are capable of.....when miami fields one of the best teams in the league. not suprising
I remember watching that game. I was obviously psyched up about it. But even I got a little frustrated with the fans. Not because I didn't like the passion, but because I wanted the damn game to get going!
Back then there was a rule that if the noise was so loud the linemen couldn't hear the snap, the QB could simply complain to the referees and they would halt play until the crowd noise died down. If I'm not mistaken, they could even penalize the home team for it. I don't know how the rule read exactly, but that was it in a nutshell.
You mean the "Stadium formerly known as Joe Robbie", don't you ?? Seriously, there have been a few like this one...there was the '77 mud bowl game against the jests in the playoffs (the AJ Duhe game) and there was the Philly/Miami game in 81...Monday night...Jaws took three delay of game penalties... But I digress....the problem is that stadiums of today don't promote that kind of enthusiasm...Joe Robbie is just one of them, even thou it's 20 some yrs old... The only stadiums that allow that kind of noise are domed stadiums...a decided disadvantage for most teams...
I miss that guy...we were a Pete Stoyannovic (sp?) missed fg away from the afc championship game that year
The Famed Orange bowl was Mystique!! Sure winning helps and also having one of the best Qb's in the business. Nothing will be like that again unless we get a new Stadium or do improvements of moving seats lower. It still won't be like the Orange Bowl. Damn I miss that place.
Two years ago Kurk Kurbstreit did a game at the sun life, and different times during the game he kept saying that something just wasn't right, he said it was a medicinal atmosphere in THIS building and that its not good for the program.
The program has been far worse than anything for this program. The building has parking, seats, drinks, food and cheerleaders. Just like every building.
We need to bring back the "Horrible Hankie" the Steelers stole that idea and made the "Terrible Towel".
Not BS at all bro.... Apathy these days definitely plays a large part in the lack of home field advantage. That said, I've had season tickets in both stadiums and been to sold out games in both. The atmosphere in Dolphins stadium at it's loudest does not a bit compare to how loud and disruptive that closed end of the Orange Bowl got. Telling you, no comparison what so ever.
When you're talking about how apathetic the fans are nowadays, don't forget that the economy is suffering and many people are out of work. The last thing I'm going to do as the head of a struggling family of four, for example, is plop down upwards of $400 for the tickets, parking, and food for one football game. I'm probably going to use that to pay a bill and try to watch the game on TV.
Still not sure why people stopped doing that. I was hoping that folks would start again at the Oak game with their white hats. ^^ This It really did. 72K plus people stomping their feet on those metal floors.. wow brings back awesome memories!
