I don't want to eat cloak. It tastes like hat.

My main issue here is that if Carpenter hits 1 of 2 field goals, this discussion never happens because the Dolphins win 23-20.

  3. This isnt his 1st bad game. I'm not saying cut him but we should of been shopping for a better kicker a long time ago. The biggest factor to us losing today was Reggies injury, IMO

He's not missing chip shots. He should make 47 yarders, but I'm not as concerned as I would be if he was shanking 30 yard field goals.

And he has made his fair share of big kicks late....like the one at the end of regulation

Carpenter has done this before. Last year in week two against Houston he wiffed on two field goals early in the game that would have kept us alive. I know that was last year but he also did the same thing against Buffalo in 2010. Point is he had two chances to win the game for us and he choked both times. Tannehill did his job, the defense for the most part did their job, and the refs did their job to keep us in this game. Carpenter had his shot and couldn't deliver. I don't want to cut the guy but damn he's done this before and its just frustrating but thats sports.
I'm a die hard 76er fan for basketball and the same thing happens in the NBA....Missed field goals in the NFL are like missed free throws in basketball. You want to choke the guy for missing but at the same time it is a team sport.

Carpenter was a big reason we lost today, though not the only one. However in preseason, he made a 53 yarder against Dallas, and 52 yarders against both Carolina and Atlanta. 5 of 7 overall because of being 0 for 2 in the first preseason game. He'd made 7 in a row before the first miss today.

He needs to go. Hes not even that good of a kicker. Hes average.

At least find one that can make big kicks

We didn't lose because of Carpenter. We lost because we essentially handed 10 points to the Jets. Stop that silly fake punt and don't throw a pick 6 and the game is over before any kicker has a chance to become relevant.

Yeah I've been thinking the same thing. I have been weary of him since last season...I joked that they "Broke his foot" after 2010. He had a great game against the Jets in week 17...but other than that Carpenter has been unimpressive/mediocre the past 2 seasons.

I know they aren't easy shots, but you get paid millions and you had two chances to his a 47/48 yarder.

That's certainly true, but let's not pretend Carp didn't miss two FG, one being a game winner that's well within his range.

He missed one against Buffalo in game 1, but we won anyway.
He missed one against the Pats in week 4, but we lost 41-14.
He missed one against Balt in week 9, but we lost 26-10
He missed 2 against Oakland in week 12 but we won 33-17
He missed one against Cleveland in week 13 and we lost by 3, 13-10.
He missed 4 against Buffalo in week 15 and we lost 17-14.
He missed one against the Pats in week 17, but we lost 38-7.
So, you could say he was definitely the culprit for one loss, and likely for 2, counting Cleveland.
2010 has been the only season he had a really mediocre FG pct overall.
It matters though just as much when you miss.

Gostkowski missed a shorter one last week that would have won the Arizona game for the Pats.

All in all, he hasn't had a lot of chances to kick a game winner on the last possession, but I've never felt totally confident when he's had those kind of chances from outside the 40, not just today. Considering he'd hooked his first miss to the right, I would have preferred him being on the right hash for that last one.

  19. MrClean

Considering he made 3 from over 50 in preseason, and made a 60 yarder in 2010, both misses were well within his range.

No, let's not. But when you play someone at home who simply can't score unless you basically score for them, the kicker is pretty low on your list of problems.

He kicked a 60 yarder in that Cleveland game (2010) and was not the reason for the loss. The offense was ****ing pathetic in that game.

That was a vintage Sparano loss.

    Hilarious.

This was Sparano all over again. They got within 50 yards and took the kick for granted. The previous regime would just run the ball. This one called for low-percentage heaves into the endzone. In both cases they were content with the opportunity for long field goals in their back pocket. At the end of regulation, Philbin somehow managed to keep all three of his timeouts in the process. Good to see clock mismanagement hasn't left us either.

Yeah you want your guy to make his kicks. But these weren't chip shots, and shame on them for coaching as if they were. You could see it coming and I screamed at my TV as it unfolded.

Awful display of neglect and gross incompetence by the men in charge IMHO. Coaching killed us as much as anything today. There were multiple examples. This was just one aspect.

OT: bonus points for calling timeout and negating the block of the game-winning kick. Added insult to injury.

As a kicker you got 1 job, no weight training no conditioning no nothing is required other than you kicking the dam ball. If you cant get that right 3-5 plays a game then you need to go. Carp has been consistently streaky and this is the straw that broke the camels back. In a close game against the Jets are you F*&@king kidding me. One is forgivable but two 45ish yard field goals. Most kickers in the league laugh at kciks in the 40 yard range.

    Im sorry unforgivable.

I wouldn't cut him, but I'd be bringing in a kicker or two this week for a "workout". Just to deliver the message to Carpenter that hey... get your stuff together. Those kicks are kicks we see Carpenter make with ease routinely the last few years. So, I'd say just send him a little message.

All in all though, shame on the staff for not calling plays to get closer to FG range to make it an easier kick, and improve your chances.

Usually a pretty good recipe for more missed field goals in the future.

Kickers are all about confidence and rythm. Unless you actually plan to cut him (which would be a hilarious overreaction), you publicly and internally emphasize how much confidence you still have in the dude.

And some wonder why people who live in Miami don't go to the games. Really? It's called the beach, or doing something relaxing, before a stressful week at work. Stuff like this tries to ruin your Sunday. If I let it, it almost ruins my Sunday all the way out west here in Scottsdale, Arizona! We all just have to remember that it is just a game! My family and I went to the early church service this morning at 8 am (because the games start at 10 am here! This is tough to do with a little one, waking up at 6:45ish on a weekend to get everyone ready), and then went straight to a brewery afterwards to catch a table in front of a tv for the game, and I would love to have my 65 dollar tab back. Let's just say that. It's a beautiful day here, just as it looked like a beautiful day in Miami. The 5 year old wanted to go to the trainpark and play, but we watched this game instead. Apathy will set in, AZ is a lot like Florida. Beautiful weather, lots of attractions, ton to do. Win, or people will choose other stuff to do.

I was considering buying tickets to next weeks AZ-Miami game here(went the last time they played in AZ, 2008), but good tickets are 100+ each, 25 for parking, and after beer and concessions looks like a 300+dollar afternoon. Not sure now I want to pay that and leave pissed off. The Cardinals have a great great defense. They are putting on a show right now, looking legit, even with a horrid offense. Worried about next week. Big game. And myself, living out here having to deal with all the bandwagon Cardinals fans thanks to Kurt Warner, an ever bigger game. Just wish they would have won today, hate losing the shoulda-won games. Carpenter's gotta step up, help out your rookie qb.

It is unforgivable. The loss is TOTALLY, COMPLETELY on Carpenter. If you are a regular player, you can afford mistakes. You can't miss two FG's and cost the game.

Carpenter's first miss was absolutely a killer, but the OT one just awful as well.

I would cut him or tell him, next kick he misses he's gone. I might bring in a new kicker each day of the week - starting tomorrow, and tell Carpenter he has to beat out each one each day.

He should be booed like crazy every time steps on the field. If he can't take it, too bad.

There is no excuse. It's not like he's Vinitiari who has won a couple of SB's.

LAWL!!! This is a joke thread, right? The offense goes anemic in the second half and puts Carpenter in two really bad spots to make two 40+ FGs, he doesn't, and now he needs to be cut? We're talking about a guy who's got a career 82% success rate, has been the AFC special teams player of the week twice, made a pro bowl and has boomed a 60 yarder. Explain to me, with intricate details, why exactly he should be cut.

While I do think the coaching staff could have put Carpenter in a better position.....to think that those kicks are anyone elses fault other than Carpenters...borders on laughable. That is his job...not once but twice. Watching games all day and those kicks are made left and right. So out of the other 31 kickers in this league...how many miss both? Can't be more than 2 or 3. I like Carpenter...but this is totally in his lap...totally.
