Was having a debate today that wasn't really a debate...(we all agreed)

Can you go out of your house and recruit a team of purely playground basketball players. (CANNOT be former college players or even high school players...just playground guys)

    AND...

    Beat a WNBA team?

If they were all like 6'10 maybe but I'd doubt 5 guys playing down at the Y could beat a WNBA team. Sad as it they might though.

Provided the guys aren't grossly overweight and they get a little time to practice together, I don't see why not.

Depends, what WNBA team, With normal sized ball?

I think it would be very hard because Women are looked down on and are vastly underrated. I'm not huge on the WNBA but they can still ball.

Since their not huge though I think there is a small chance you could win but they can hit the 3 all day.

I would say College 3, and Normal sized ball. But if you really think you can beat them play with their ball.

I think if you were to play against them with their ball you have no chance.

    I say...in a gym with a regulation ball with the NBA 3...

I am talking about walking out of your door and going ona recruiting trip. Only qualification..they have to be regular joes...no former college players or high school players.

I think the Guys are a lock.

Depends if you get no one taller than 6'4 you might struggle. I think if its with a regular ball guys can win but its not like Girls can't shoot with a normal sized ball or from NBA range. I think guys are quicker and more athletic but I still think a WNBA team would still win.

We (me and 4 random guys) played at the rec center against 5 girls on the Women's team at Akron, and they flat out stomped us (16-7 by 1's and 2's with a regulation ball an college 3). To be fair a few things should be noted: 1- I am not a very good basketball player, though I try my hardest and enjoy it. 2- I was probably the 3rd best player on my team. 3- The two better players were "me" players, so rarely did they ever pass the ball out it was always them driving in or taking jump shots. 4- The girls obviously had a lot of experience together. 5- The girls actually had the height advantage as their center was at least 6'5" (and a freshman pre-med student, I was surprised. She was pretty good looking too). Everyone else was within an inch or two of each other, and our tallest guy was probably 6'3".

I said WNBA all star team vs High School All-American team and I have no doubt the men win.

Did you see the US women's olympic hockey team lose to the high school boy's team a few years back and they were even using the women's rules?

No high schoolers either? Do you also mean like former Hs's? If so I'd say the WNBA players. At a certain point fundamentals are something to hang your hat on.

It's funny you bring this up, I was thinking about it today on my way to my Thursday night game. You know that ad campaign they're running now? The one where some WNBA player comes on and says stuff like "we want no part of your rec league team. I hate contact, so you can post me up all day." I was watching that and said to my wife, "holy cow, truth in advertising! What a great ad campaign!" (What, you mean it's supposed to be ironic? Baloney.)

I think if you had five good rec league players, at least one of whom (and preferably two) was a least a 6'6 bruiser, and they had a month to practice together, yes, the guys would win. I think it would be hard to pick five guys and put them up against the Detroit Shock right away though.

Teamwork counts for a lot in basketball. If the guys learned to play defense together, and even learned to execute a simple pick and roll, I think they'd be fine. However, without some basic team defense, the ladies would just pick them apart with outside shooting. Since the guys wouldn't play a zone defense anyway (only a clinically braindead coach would use zone D against a team whose best hope of scoring is to make it rain threes...so Doc Rivers can't coach this team), some work together on a cohesive man to man (or as the great Bill Raftery says "the mantaman!") would be enough.

Remember that in my hypothetical, I am allowing you to go out and just recruit whoever you want, as long as they are not a former college player or high school player. Just a park junkie.

I would also allow a one month training camp.

SO I would allow everything you would need to make sure that you can't be "outcoached".

Trying to make all the intangibles equal.

I am sure of my position. here in Miami, when I was playing alot of park basketball, there were some players that would wipe the floor with Candace Parker.

Just playground guys? Sure. Take them down to a court down here somewhere in NYC (I forget where it is, but it is very famous) and take five of the nastiest street ballers there and they will school a WNBA AllStar team by 40+.

    Okay, New one.

A good..but won't make it in the NBA college player with 4 complete park stiffs versus a mediocre WNBA team.

    OR

Lebron James by himself versus the Detroit Shock in a half court game.

Section that isn't even fair Lebron would win hands down. There isnt a girl who could guard him hell there is no one in teh NBA who can guard him.

Baising off your first one most guys at a Rec center are hacks who suck. There is maybe like 3 guys who are actually decent.

Nah..my first one is still the question.

I am allowing you to go in your car and go anywhere you want to to any playground in your area and build a team. I am not talking about the stiffs at the Y.

I am also giving you a month for training camp.

Well if its around here look no further there is a rec 13 miles by my house with about 75-100 Black guys that play and i'd say 25% of them are over 6'6.

OK, then yes. The guys would win, and probably by a good amount. Give me five park junkies: two low post bruisers, a point guard with a sweet handle who loves to pass, a long range bomber and a slasher who loves to drive the hole. (And1 Mix Tape Tour rejects need not apply.) Give them a month to learn a decent pick and roll, and how to play defense together, and I'd bet heavily on them beating a WNBA team. If you throw in park rules, i.e. no blood, no foul, it would be a blowout. The ladies would probably knock down some outside shots, but getting inside? Forget it.

Edit: I noticed later that you were talking about "your area". Rochester, NY isn't exactly a hotbed of rec league talent. I'm driving to Buffalo-Niagara Falls for my guys. Hope that's okay.

in a college rules game, two 20 minute halves:
the mens team wins by 5 to 7 times the girls points.
the women dont score over 19 points.
at least 4 of the girls cry before the final buzzer sounds.
a minimum of 2 of the girls end the game pregnant.

I wouldn't underestimate them, either. Teamwork counts for a lot. That's why I insisted on a month of practice time to get these guys to play a cohesive man to man. Without it, there's a very real chance the women would just rain open jumpers on the guys.

By the way, the next time I really feel the need to piss off my mother in law, I'll bring this topic up.

Yeah, OK. I'll be manning the ball at the top of the key, then I'll give her that killer Johnny Bravo stare. Basketball will be the last thing she'll be thinking about. You can bet that. Easy route to the basket from there.........

There are pickup teams of 5 at the Rucker that can take a few NBA players. Believe that. I'm not talking Kobe Bryant or Chris Paul, but let's say you pile up a few bench players. Seriously, there are some extremely talented players out there.

In all seriousness, I definitely agree with the above. I've been around the game all my life, and I've seen quite a few chicks who can ball for real (organized hoops). Candace Parker can ball for real. Admittedly, I watched her a few times at Tennessee. If there was ever a reason to watch WNBA basketball, it'd be her. But ehhh, I don't think so.

But it is also full of just young street ballers. I think if you take the five best just straight up street ballers, you can field a team to beat a WNBA team. Now if you just go out to your local neighborhood, I don't know about that.

We had a girl on our high school team that was badass. Our boys teams had some pretty legit street players (though we generally weren't a great 'team'). And that chick would practice with the guys a lot. Her ball skills were that good (no pun intended).

So no, in this scenario I believe the guys would get slaughtered.
